  1. Something to consider when projecting this year's roster is the clear "pay your dues" attitude implemented by Lafontaine and Nolan when they arrived. We've seen nothing to indicate Murray feels any differently.

That's why I think Deslauriers, Larsson, Ristolainen and Pysyk have the inside track on jobs coming out of training camp and Carrier, McCabe, Grigorenko Zadorov and Armia are longshots.

The former have already shown they are very effective AHL players, the latter have not.

Reinhart is your best shot at an exception.

  2. Myers. He won't turn everyone on here into believers, but he will be a high risk high reward, top pairing, all situation difference making defenceman.

Again Myers. If he isn't a top-pairing guy, our defence is going to look pretty sad.

Reinhart. I want a number one centre again so bad, a guy who can actually threaten to regularly add his name to the league's scoring leader board. We haven't had one for so long and he is the best chance of anyone we've seen in years.

  3. The Anders(s)on's. Shawn and Bo Mikael.

Very good. Shawn was a fifth overall pick and the highest ranked defenceman in that draft.

He did nothing and we could have had Brian Leetch.

For me, this usually focuses on picks that bust. Erik Rasmussen was a number seven overall and at the world juniors he looked like Brendan Shanahan. My hopes were sky-high. He's definitely up there for me.

  4.

I would expect him to take an unofficial demotion here, and then look to land in a hockey department where he's with some of "his" people. It just seems to be how that industry works. It also seems like that's what the Sabres are allowing him to do by keeping him on.

The problem with Devine as Murray's right hand is Devine's skill set seems to be similar to his boss's rather than complementary.

I would also imagine Murray has taken direct control of a lot of things Devine probably had a lot of freedom to do himself under Darcy.

I think a parting was always inevitable and will happen as soon as Devine finds the right fit.

You know you're a deeply pathological Sabres fan when you're posting dream scenarios for prospects from your vacation in Europe during the dog days of the offseason.

(Of course, I've probably put up at least 100 posts in the same situation.)

Arrivederci! Hope you are having a great time.

  6. I can't see him ever scoring first line centre points.

But I can see him matched up against and dominating a lot of first-line centres.

I've had too much Italian sun and wine, so I'm going to say what I think many of us hope, but are too cautious to post: this kid is the real deal and will be remembered among the all-time great Sabres.

Has any player ever gone from the USHL at 17 to the NHL at 19? His growth has been amazing. He got more points as a 19-year-old NHLer than he did in the AHL at 18. He continues to blaze new ground. He's a teenager (or just stopped being one) from Latvia, for ###### sakes.

We are just scratching the surface. His ceiling is Ryan Kesler with a team-first attitude, or an upper case Michael Peca. PK, 17 minutes a night against the opponents best players, 50 to 60 points at his best, a captain who plays and delivers in all the key situations.

  7.

2 things. 1) Sam Reinhart as a LW at any point in his career is highly unlikely. The game he plays and the skills don't translate him to a winger. 2) As you say the younger guys will add a few lbs but I am not sure why it matters if our forwards average out to 201 or 208. Either way that is a solid and heavy forward group.

I agree Reinhart is a natural centre, but he played W at last year's WJC and played it well.

IMO, he's a better choice than Grigorenko to move to the wall, despite Grigorenko's size.

  8. Pysyk has paid his dues. He was ready last year and will be in Buffalo barring his game falling off the face of the earth, which it won't do.

Benoit is like Strachan and to a lesser extent, Meszaros and Weber:they are placeholders and obstacles. making sure the kids won't have to be in the NHL until they should.

  9. Grigorenko has done about what you'd expect a mid first-rounder to have done in his two years after being drafted.

Dominated juniors, performed well in the WJC, got a taste of the pros and gotten bigger and stronger.

Don't judge him on his botched NHL experience.

I remain more worried about Armia.

  10.

Hmmm, three D and one who may or may not want to come to North America in the top 10? Do the Sabres take the D if they get pick #3? WTF, another D man isn't going to put this team over the top. If they get 3 or 4 they should trade down and go for one of the centers. Hardly the outcome one expects right now...unless the Sabres win the lotto, I can see a draft-day let-down brewing.

If we pick 3-5, I'd be happy to take kylington or Hanifan, they're top pairing defencemen. We'll have two othe picks to add more scoring.

  11.

Other than the "safe" thing (which I don't really understand), I can't really disagree with any of this. All I'm saying is that eventually, we are going to have to embrace winning and the present over losing and the future.

I'm not against winning this year. To me, it's a sign our kids are getting better. I'm not against trading some of our picks and prospects for a good player, as long as that player is young enough.

I'm against mortgaging cap space and prospects to turn us from terrible to pretender.

It's about amassing enough good players who will hit their peak around the same time, then augmenting them with the missing pieces.

We're still on the first phase, but we can move into phase two next year.

You need to fax out the memo again, because I do not get the impression many of your fellow tankers see it that way. Even in the media, the tank is presented with McDavid and Eichel as the objectives. It's not very frequent that the clarification is made that it is unlikely the Sabres will acquire either as a result of tanking.

Only here on SS do I see the more savvy tankers admit to this reality, and even some of those do so in a seemingly reticent manner.

This is the part of the tank that bothers me greatly: it seems many folks believe, beyond rationality, that the end game is a top 2 pick.

Claude responded very well, but I want to echo many others on agreeing with his response.

McEichel is the perfect storm. But what the Sabre-style tank is really about is acquiring enough girgensons, Ristolainens and (hopefully) Reinharts to make us the Detroit of the next decade.

  13. Last year was horrifically, hellishly bad.

The three previous years were a purgatory of stagnation because we weren't good enough and (false hope of Leino and Ehrhoff notwithstanding) we weren't getting better.

This year will be bad, but it will be better, because we will finally show some signs of moving forward.

You can call it marketing or fooling a gullible fan base. I think a scorched earth policy was overdue.

And the price of last season and the coming season is something that needed to be paid.
