  1. Can someone explain why some seem to think Grigorenko was significant trade value. I get that he is a former 1st round pick. Nothing he has shown since that day screams NHL Player. I'm willing to listen. I see posters add Grigorenko into trade discussions and the first thought in my mind is why would the other make any significant investment to acquire Grigorenko. IMO, his value at this point is of a middle round draft pick. 4th or 5th round in return. I think a 3rd would be a generous return at this point. Again, I'm willing to listen.

Regardless of your opinion or my opinion of Grigorenko, NHL scouts apparently still consider him a top 50 drafted prospect. He was ranked 38th in this year's Hockey News Future Watch, which is an annual poll of NHL GMs and head scouts.

He remains our 2nd-ranked prospect. Players ranked near him include top-ranked goalies Thatcher Demko, Zach Fucale and Malcolm Subban and 2014 mid-first-round forwards Jakub Vrana, Kasperi Kapanen and Brendan Perlini. Brendan Lemieux was the first pick of the 2nd round last year and he is ranked 74th.

To me, that says most organizations would instantly trade a third for Grigorenko, and some might cough up as much as a late first.

  2. Further to the interviews: here's a piece on the Leafs that says they interviewed both Eichel and McDavid and why:

    http://www.torontosun.com/2015/06/05/maple-leafs-chat-with-top-prospects-mcdavid-eichel

Also says Dylan Strome was interviewed by 17 teams. Apparently Pavel Zacha did 24.

I couldn't find anything about a cap on how many interviews a team could do.

A couple sources said the interviews are only allowed to be 20 minutes long.

This older one says teams spend up to nine hours a day over five days in interviews. Technically, that's room for 135 interviews. That's unlikely, but it also does make a cap of 10 unlikely as well.

  3. Then why blow an interview on Eichel? If you would take McDavid without interviewing him, why not Eichel? Especially since the team which send out pamphlets bragging about all their 1st and 2nd picks.....wouldn't it make more sense to interview a guy in the 10-15 range? You only have 10 interviews. What could Eichel possibly say in an interview that would stop you from drafting him? He's not telling you he's going back to college even if he is thinking about it.

    d

I would interview him because he is almost certainly the kid you are taking and it is the start of what you hope will be the beginning of a lifetime relationship.

Separate from the point, do you only get 10 interviews? I hadn't heard that. Don't doubt you, but it seems low.

  4.

Then Tim Murray just told his daughter with the club foot, "Sure honey....you can be the lead in the ballet at the Met next year!"

If he thought there was even a 5% chance Eichel goes first, he should be all over a McDavid interview. You may see something on McDavid hit the media the next few weeks for all we know.

No he didn't. He showed one of the best NHL prospects in the past decade he is focused on him with the #2 pick.

I already said Murray doesn't think there is a chance Eichel will go first. I think you and I both agree on that.

But say he does. Why does he need to interview McDavid?

He doesn't expect him to be available at 2, but if he is, he will draft him there and no interview is going to change that.

Eichel is not a fragile girl with a club foot and impossible dreams. He is the consensus second pick of 2015 draft.

He knows it. Everybody knows it.

  5. That wasn't my original point though.

    1) I felt that Murray was being a dipsh!t by pumping Eichel's tires to make up for his snide remarks at the lottery. If you truly believe he has a right to be the #1 pick...then why the hell aren't you interviewing McDavid? It has to be because you know McDavid is so much better.

    2) Everyone told me I'm FOS....so....then if Murray truly believes Eichel could be #1, and he didn't cover his bases......then why are reports of 10 teams from Murray himself on top of others...interviewing Eichel, and nothing on McDavid?

It's almost 3 strikes on Murray.......He almost cries at the lottery, his actions are contradictory from what he says about Eichel but does otherwise, and now 1/3 of the league according to him is interviewing Eichel.

    3) It's one of two things.....1) As much as I like Murray's vision of a team, he is more of a snake than i thought, but without the training how to do it....or 2) All is fair in love and war and he is totally setting this pick up to be shopped hard.

    1) I think the Sabres didn't interview McDavid because he is number one on their board regardless of any interview. They can't and won't say that publicly, but they can and should say they like the fact that Eichel believes he's better.

    2) Murray never said he believes Eichel is #1. That was very noticeable to me in the WGR interview.

The numbers of interviews appear to be four for McDavid and six for Eichel, which punched a hole in your original argument. It simply tells me those are the number of teams that feel they have something to gain from those particular interviews.

I don't have enough information to speculate why those teams did those interviews. I don't even know who they were. In my opinion, gathering intel on other prospects is possible, but unlikely; considering making offers for those players and/or doing due diligence in case somebody slips are more likely.

    3) Or maybe he is neither a snake, nor shopping Eichel hard. Maybe he is just the opposite of Russ Brandon and his lack of a good filter gets him into trouble.

I think the only way your argument holds water is if Murray is pretending to like Eichel. And I just don't see the evidence. He loves McDavid, wanted him desperately, and ###### up socially when he basically acknowledged that at the lottery. He loves Eichel less, but he still loves him and plans to pick him unless some team makes a stupid offer.

  6. The WGR question specifically quoted the Boston article, which didn't quote sources but said interviewed by several teams respectfully telling questioners (plural). I think Eichel is miffed because he doesn't want to come across as cocky.

Yet another kid who won't be opening up to reporters.

  7. I truly believe Bogo was an ancillary piece to that trade. It was about Kane, but given what Winnipeg wanted, we had to acquire Bogo too in order to make our roster work (both near and long term). That's not to say Murray doesn't like him, but I don't think it was an "I gotta get him" situation. With Murray's talk about the importance of hockey sense and his like of puck moving defenseman, I don't find it hard to believe at all he may value Pysyk more.

I think if Murray was going to move Myers, he was always going to get a minute-munching defender in return. To do otherwise was always going to leave too big a hole.

I have little doubt the rumour about Fowler being talked about in an Anaheim deal was also true and think that was always the hold-up in a Detroit trade because Detroit didn't have a defenceman who fit the profile.

  8. Looking at Bobby Mac's list, we will have to move up to get the target I thought would be around at 21, Zboril. I also had some hopes that Konecny or White would slip to 21, but it doesn't look like that will happen either.

Besides Zboril, other guys that would be great fits  for our system 8-10 picks up are Werenski and Meier. I would trade 21 and 31 for Werenski in a heartbeat, but I really can't see that happening.

Best possible trade partners look like LA at 13 and Boston at 14 in some sort of deal where we relieve some of their cap issues.

  9. More roster discussion with the penultimate free agent in the organization:

    post-2708-0-73343300-1433523517_thumb.jpg

    #59 Tim Schaller C (24-year-old RFA)

    Rochester 65/15/28/43/3/116

    Buffalo 18/1/1/1/-5/2

If there was an award for the most under-the-radar prospect for the Sabres going in to last year, it would probably have gone to Tim Schaller. By the end of the year, if there was another award for most improved prospect, he would have been in the running for that as well. A New Hampshire-born undrafted college free agent, Schaller parlayed decent size and a reputation for responsible play into a professional contract, but his lack of skill made him an apparent longshot for an NHL career.

Two years later, he’s certainly grown in stature. The rookie’s strong final month in Rochester caught the organization’s attention and he followed that up with a good camp last fall. Adding some surprising offensive numbers in his second AHL season to go with his continued attention to detail, he ended up being one the primary Rochester call-ups. While he certainly didn’t stand out in the NHL, he didn’t look out of place on the fourth line either.

As an older prospect seeking a new contract, he is at a crossroads. He’s well down the team’s list of centre ice prospects, but even the most loaded teams need serviceable fourth liners. It’s not yet clear if he is just another warm body, or whether he can provide good service as an 11th-13th forward in the manner of a Cody McCormick.

  10. Should I be embarrassed that I have no idea who this is?

Most talented Russian forward this year, at least among those playing in Russia.

Some rank him as high as the mid-first, more significantly lower.

The Russian factor is apparently strong in this one.

  11. My only question here, and it's purely because I'm not as much an X's and O's guy than some of you, is that if Eichel can play the number one center role this coming season, how much better is he really than Reinhart? There's no doubt that he's been much more coveted but we're still talking about the past two years' second overall picks.

Again, I'm noy trying to be skeptical of Reinhart (quite the opposite) but how much can we expect from him as compared to Eichel in the next two seasons? Is this a guy who won't be making an impact until 2017, 2018?

Here is how some select comparably hyped players did coming out of the draft.

The Eichel list shows their first year after being drafted, the Reinhart list their second year after being drafted:

    Eichel:

    Nathan McKinnon  82 24/39/63

    John Tavares          82/24/30/54

    Steven Stamkos     79 23/23/46

    Eric Staal                81/11/20/31

Jason Spezza         Went back to Junior

    Vinny Lecavalier      82/13/15/28

    Joe Thornton           55/3/4/7

    Reinhart:

    Alexsandr Barkov         71/16/20/36

    Ryan Nugent Hopkins  40/4/20/24

    Alex Galchenyuk          65/13/18/31

    Kyle Turris                    63/8/12/20

    Jonathan Toews           64/20/30/54

    Henrik Sedin                 82/9/20/29

Like Reinhart, Sedin, Turris and Toews did not play regularly in the NHL the year after being drafted

  12. Kid comes into the room with some swagger and rubs the vets the wrong way with his attitude.

He takes his shots, perseveres, learns from the situation and eventually proves that he is a helluva asset to the organization, even if a few vets may still give him less rope than he earned.

I guess I'm saying people grow up and learn when they get the opportunity, even if when they do there is every chance that their peers might not recognize it.

I don't see Hoss as a negative influence on young SabreSpacers; on the contrary, he is a leader.

I think Kane in Buffalo will be the same way. Murray and Bylsma will make sure of it

  13. Do you really think he would tell people if he really planned on taking a goalie at 21? I am 90% certain they don't pick at 21 and 100% they don't take a goalie in round 1.

I think it is entirely possible he might be putting that out as a smokescreen. But he did say it.

  14. Be interesting to see if Dudacek's right about the Russian kid. If they do pick a goalie in the 1st, it could up the odds of them going after a stopgap like Anderson this off-season.

It's in the same interview. He talks about possibly taking a goalie when they ask him what they are looking at with pick 21. Then very late in the interview they tell him that Button talked about Samsonov at that spot, and he says we have him ranked right around the same place.

  15. Some Tidbits from the Combine.

Prospects mentioned Pittsburgh and Buffalo were the toughest interviews, while others gave Los Angeles mixed reviews.

The facilities used for the combine have been receiving rave reviews from the NHL

It's OK by me if you start stalking people if it means more insider posts.

  16. Dan Marr Director of Central Scouting for the NHL was on GR yesterday and mentioned he was responsible for drafting Kane and Bogosian went he was with Atlanta. They asked him about Kane's Off Ice Issues and he mentioned he is an ultra competive player and he was never fined or suspended by the Jets.

I had a chance to talk to him today and I mentioned I enjoyed his interview yesterday. He proceeded to tell me he could not mention this on the radio, but Andrew Ladd acted foolishly in his handling of the locker room situation last season. He could not believe that he allowed Buff to control the locker room as much as he did. And he reiterated Kane was not the cause of the problem.

Another cool story was that he was the trainer for the Leafs prior to becoming a scout and when Bowman was named GM of the Sabres he hired Marr to be the trainer for the Sabres. Unfortunately there was a snafu with NYS labor laws that prevented him from taking the job.

    Good stuff.

I was wondering if there was going to be any more chance encounter info like this floating around with all the hockey people in town.

  17. The comeback of the bald eagle seems fully complete. Many people don't seem to bat an eye at seeing one, or having one pointed out to them. Which is a good sign, all in all. I am not one of them. I still get a thrill.

Eagles have become common sights right here in town even. I looked out my back window a few days ago and in that sliver of a view, for a count of one-one thousand, two-one thousand, an eagle flew by, trailed closely by a small, darkish bird that was pestering the crap out of it. The eagle was unfazed, steady, bored.  The other bird was all "oogie, boogie, get outtttta here." It was Air Force One being trailed by a piper cub.

This was over the Tuna Creek next to the oil refinery. The older folks will tell you how badly the creek was polluted back in the day, from oil and gas drilling, oil refining, crude sewer systems... Apparently it's gotten better. The eagles are finding fish to eat, anyway.

Where I live, bald eagles have always been plentiful.

I once counted 73 on the mud flats of the harbour at low tide from the deck at my dad's house.

Watching them dive-bomb fish wasn't as common as you might think, but my favourite scene was when one would pluck an old bullhead and the crows would pester it as it headed for the trees. A handful would dart in and around until the eagle lost its grip on the fish, and another handful of the same murder would flit off to share the spoils.
