  1. I think if we got a look at actual revenues we'd see why another team in Toronto makes sense.

I'd bet good money the Leafs have revenue streams double that of all but a handful of teams.

A second team might cut into their merchandise and sponsorship revenue a bit, but the arena and TV revenue from the new team would all be gravy, new money from people who can't currently share from the Leaf pie.

A second Toronto team would be a goal mine for the owner and the NHL.

No, you did not answer my question. I'll try again. I understand, and conceed, that a 2nd team in Toronto would be well supported and sell out every game. My question is, how is a team in Toronto (or any Canadian city) better for THE LEAGUE than a team in Seattle or LV?

Again, I agree that another team in Toronto would be highly successful in that market. Not relevant to my question.

    This is getting frustrating.

Expansion fees, revenue sharing, merchandise are three ways that come to mind.

  2. So if I am to believe the hype machine this draft has a legitimate:

    Crosby in McKinnon

    Malkin in Eichel

    Lidstrom in Hanifan

    Karlsson in Kylington

    Jamie Benn in Zacha

And it has at least five other centres with questions marks, but also first-line potential:

    A Ron Francis-type in Strome

Tyler Ennis on Viagra in Konecny

    A lower-case Yzerman in White

    A lower-case Sakic in Marner

And a Gretzky-style playmaker in Barzal

We should add one and likely two of these guys to our excellent pipeline next June.

And that is why nobody should be saying its McEichel or bust.

  3.

I maintain the Isles will be much I proved. I think Florida also has a chance to be less terrible. Edmonton maybe, but their goaltending is still so uncertain. Ironically, I think the Avs are poised to come back down to earth a bit. Still a playoff team, but my money is on a bottom-three seed.

Yeah, I really should get a side bet going with you and LGR on the Isles, because I'm not seeing it.

Edmonton is the team that has the most in common with the Avs. There's a reasonable chance they'll be better, but I don't see a huge leap unless one of their goalies really turns it on.

  4. Rogers has taken over GameCentre in Canada this year thanks to a fat new deal that used to steal hockey from TSN.

They are jacking up the price by $50 but offering the first three month free, so it looks like it may balance out.

However, they are treating this like an entirely new service and it looks like I will have to cancel my existing account and re-register through Rogers. Anyone on here have any information on this.

(As an aside, I'm going to miss the TSN broadcasts. Best in the business in my opinion.)

  5. You know, that's pretty much the team the coaching staff designed.

The running game takes the lead, EJ takes care of the ball, the skill guys make plays and the defence is stout enough while forcing turnovers.

I don't think the bears are a great team, but that doesn't change the fact the Bills played well.

PS Corey Graham looked outstanding out there.

  6. I've watched lots of preseasons that fed false hope before.

But I have never watched a preseason that was as much of a pessimistic, sky-is-falling, we're doomed tire fire as this one.

I caved and bought Sunday ticket this morning.

  7.

According to THN, in February 2012, Grigorenko was still #3 and was the highest rated C. Forsberg (who fell to (shudder) 11 and whom several here still covet) had taken Galchenyuk's 2nd spot as Alex fell to 6.

It wasn't until Grigorenko's poor close to the year due to the mono that his stock dropped.

Also according to TSN, in February 2014, Reinhart was #4 and was the 3rd ranked C behind Draisatl and Bennett. Those 2 names might ring a bell as there were a fair # of people here that thought Bennett could be the Sabres pick and I could've sworn somebody here thwought it could have been Leon. (Not positive on the last one.)

So to say Reinhart was ALWAYS thought more highly than Grigorenko would not be accurate. (At least according to the crew at THN.)

All true. But the snapshot you are looking at is where Grigo was at his apex and Reinhart his nadir, in terms of hype.

And it is at the midway point of the season that fans and media start paying serious attention to the draft.

Typically, during the first half of a draft year scouts are picking apart the favourites (like Reinhart and McKinnon) and giving serious consideration to the risers (like Bennett and Drouin). Then they spend the second half of the season second guessing their second guessing.

So you're right, "always" was hyperbole, and I apologize for that. But it is accurate to say that in the two-year run-up to the draft Reinhart spent a lot of time as a consensus number one and never dropped lower than a very close four. Grigo was never a consensus one and ultimately a 12. I'll try this, "generally", Reinhart was a higher-ranked prospect.

(I hope you're right and mono was the only reason.)

  8.

Not sure how you can say Sam has always been a better prospect than Mikhail. They've both been considered top 3 at points and I don't recall people claiming heading into the draft that the '12 draft class was a particularly weak one, unlike the class of 14.o

At the beginning and at the end of 2012/13, Sam was the consensus number one guy for 2014. Grigo was never the number one guy for 2012 and was only seriously in that conversation for a few months early in his draft year. Sam was never out of the conversation in his year.

Neither 2012, nor 2014 were considered weak drafts. They were considered average.

The "weak" perception comes from comparisons to the top end of 2013 and 2015, where McKinnon, Jones and Eichel were/are being talked up as franchise players and McDavid is getting the generational tag.

Reinhart is neither, but he is just as good a first-line prospect on his draft day as Barkov, Drouin, Yakupov, Galchenyuk, and Nugent-Hopkins were on theirs.

Grigorenko was not. That is why he slipped to 12.

I feel very sorry for the kid for the fact the media-created perception to the contrary was out there, and that The Sabres did everything they could to encourage it.

  9. The fact that this story is even out there tells me there is huge tension in the front office.

It may not be completely accurate, but Lacanfora didn't make this stuff up.

This is the story he was told by some (rat/hero) within the organization.
