  1. I'm aware, and I may be guilty of going PA-on-Pegula with this, but when a guy mentions work and honest effort and heart every time he's in front of a mic, then that should be pretty central to any decision. I'm thinking more of Zadorov with this one, but giving a guy his 9 games just because it's an option seems to be a pretty weak reason to sidestep a core tenet of somebody's coaching philosophy. I think we can agree that due to numbers it would take a modern miracle for Zadorov to make the team, and many would agree he hasn't come close to earning it, so why is he here? What gives?

Edit: something about "guys have to work hard and earn it" followed with an implied "...and have a favorable contract situation" just doesn't jive with me from a coach with Nolan's reputation. Maybe all I really want is Nolan to tone down the rhetoric when he knows the politics of it all also plays a role? I think that might be it.

Why was it only about politics? Sam worked just as hard as Grigo and produced about as much.

Grigo stood out a ton because of his improvement. Reinhart because he didn't light the world on fire.

But how much of that factored into our perception of who "earned it" and how many unseen things did Nolan see that factored into his?

    yes like one month ago

Nolan did say he was not taking Traverse city into account.

I think one of the things with Nikita, and maybe with Samson as well, is that the organization thinks the NHL may be better for them than juniors. Neither is really being challenged down there, nor playing with Brian Gionta and Josh Gorges.

  2. This was one of the more experimental drafts I've ever done. I elected to base it entirely on one stat category to see if the others fall in line with it.

Nothing else has granted me a championship in Gold so let's see where it goes. :P

    Interesting. Which team were you?

I made like an NFL team as the draft wound down; I've already added four free agents.

  3.

Reading through the reactions here, I wonder why it would be so bad if he is pissed. This could very easily be the exact move that lights a fire under his ass. Grigorenko needs to go out there and show the world that he belongs in the NHL and hopefully this will be the moment where he finally gets it.

And if that is the message Murray is trying to send, good for him.

This team needs men, not spoiled boys.

  4. Sounds like he is pissed off - in the right way.

I'm looking forward to seeing him rip up the AHL and being back as soon as a spot opens.

I'm not buying the meritocracy claims though, with Reinhart and Zadorov being the prime examples.

This roster looks pretty much exactly like tim Murray expected it to look in July.

  5. Could be as simple as the Sabres thinking this is best for each player's development: Reinhart and Zadorov need to be challenged, and Grigorenko needs to be the go-to guy.

It will be interesting to see what Ted and Tim have to say.

  6. Zemgus was top six to finish last year and — crappy camp notwithstanding — has been the most impressive of the kids so far.

I don't think it's a stretch to think he will get top six minutes, especially on a team expected to be among the dregs of the league.

  7. I sneered at the "kids coming" and "russian additions" because of their D.

Those are two NHL defensemen. Still don't see them as a playoff team, but those two will definitely help.

Also, I wouldn't have been in on Leddy so much because of all our young D, but I wonder what the price would have been to bring Boychuk to Buffalo?

  8. Really soured on Foligno, weave, or just forgot him?

I think the organization is really counting on him to bounce back and expects him to be more than a fourth-liner.

That second line looks like a smart opposing coach's wet dream. I don't know how much matching and specialization Nolan plans on doing, but that second line needs heavily protected minutes.

At home though, they could do a lot of damage, especially against shallow teams.

  9. So you you've read the reports, watched and listened to the games.

    Who is here opening night?

I see Ennis/Moulson/Stafford/Myers/Gorges as a lock on the first line.

Hodgson and Stewart are bookends on the second.

Gionta and Foligno should flank Girgensons (despite a very nondescript camp) on the third.

And McCormick wasn't signed to play in the minors. He'll anchor the fourth.

Meszaros and Benoit are locks on the blue line and Risto should join them. He's ready.

    Neuvirth backs up Enroth

Rounding out the blue line, Weber held off Strachan and McCabe has earned a shot, at least until Pysyk gets healthy. Zadorov didn't show enough.

They won't risk Deslauriers on waivers, but I think he's earned a spot on the fourth line anyway.

Flynn and Mitchell outlasted Dalpe for the other depth spots, at least until Kaleta comes back.

And Mikhail Grigorenko edges Sam Reinhart for the number two centre spot.

They will probably keep Sam around for his nine games just to see what plays out because there is a spot available.

But right now there is no room for him in the top nine.

  10. I hate that the comments coming out of the locker room, which are showing up in the on ice product, is that players weren't being allowed to just "play their game".

It's one of the biggest fundamentals in building a hockey team. You put guys together who's games complement one another. You let each guy do what he does best.

The last 7 years of Sabres hockey has felt forced and inorganic. And I have a feeling it was a direct result of Darcy assembling a team that was ignorant of each players individual game. Play the system. Forget your "style". Become a robot.

    ###### THAT.

    But, but, analytics...!

  11. I don't see any reason to pick a goalie that early. We have at least 4 already that could start/are starting in the NHL. And three more who are probably close. That's 7 goalies in the system. If we can't make it a few years on that we're idiots.

But goalie building is five-year process and there isn't a blue-chipper right now in our bunch.

I look at the Blues with Jake Allen ready to step in, or the Ducks with John Gibson. I want to take a kid this year and have him in that position five years from now.

By that time, at least five of the goalies we have now will be either established or gone.

If Ullmark has turned into Lundquist in the meantime, great, the kid we take this year turns into great trade bait, just like Corey Schneider and Jonathan Bernier did.

As for the crowd, our prospect list is far more crowded up front than it is in goal.

  12. Lieuwen's big and a good kid. I'm not sure he's talented enough.

Makarov has looked really shaky at times, but other times he just looks like he has "it."

Hackett reminds me of Dan Cloutier; too intense for his own good. But he's got more ability than he showed last year.

Enroth has got skill and a great mindset. People will always question his size and strength.

Neuvirth may be the most talented of the bunch, but I question his mental game.

I haven't seen the Swedes, Ullmark and Johansson, but it certainly sounds like there's promise there.

I think there is reason to believe someone will emerge, but I haven't got a clue who.

And I still think we need to take this year's Demko/Fucale/Gibson with the first we got from St. Louis, or our early second. Never hurts to add a blue chipper to the system. Given our wealth of high picks, not using one on a goalie is a waste, IMO

  13. Where do the Sabres finish: 26th

Eastern Conference Finals: Montreal over Tampa

Western Conference Finals: Anaheim over Chicago

Stanley Cup Finals: Anaheim over the Habs

    Hart Trophy: Alexander Ovechkin

    Vezina Trophy: Carey Price

    Norris: Shea Weber

    Jack Adams (coach): Peter Laviolette

Bonus: Who will be the biggest name moved during the season?

    Joe Thornton

  14. No way we got that much better and those teams got that much worse. It won't be a runaway like last year and we may have some "must losses" but I think we will be right in the hunt. Should be interesting watching these GM's try to out tank one another.

I think its going to be a much more interesting race to the bottom than last year.

    I'm ready for some hockey.

  15. Same for me on the Ryan to Philly.

Interesting fact re the Kane rumours: the most prominent player ever acquired in trade by Kevin Cheveldayoff in a trade is Devon Setoguchi. In fact, he is probably the only player he ever traded for that could be considered an NHL regular.

Biggest player he ever gave up: Johnny Oduya.

The guys only made about a dozen trades and none of them significant.

Jets fans must be getting impatient.
