That is the recency bias I guess, but has a look about him that brings out the Pronger once in while.

For the benefit of this conversation, what plays other than that 1 in the Worlds did he show a little Pronger?

I know there's been a couple jokes here about Granato coaching the Amerks, but that's exactly where he belongs.  I hope he catches on somewhere in the AHL.  He should be developing guys.

Im not even sure he’s AHL material.  May main concern is that he seems more skill development then overall game development.  Thinking specifically of word regarding practice prep, season prep.  In my head I think AHL is more than skill and positional development.  I would hate for my AHL team to not be getting these kids ready in terms of overall pace of practice, etc.

He might be capped out at pure developmental levels.

  3. I put another walleye in the freezer again today.  This one was a big girl.  24” and pushing 5lbs.

Between yesterday and today I’ve probably paddled 12 miles.

I think the most strenuous thing I am going to do this afternoon is have a cocktail on the deck.

The Bruins lose… I liked their effort level.

The Sabres win… The other team played badly.

Precious gems from the guy who preaches nonstop about toughness, defensive ability and physicality, yet chooses a screen name of a guy with none of those attributes. ZERO.

If Gilbert Perreault played on this team today the only time you wouldn’t piss on him would be if he was on fire.

    FOREVER!!! 🙄

You’re not wrong, but the glass half full vs half empty perspective has been well earned by the two teams in question here.

  5. First time out on the kayak for the season.

Was targeting walleyes primarily, but end up with a very mixed bag.

On the water at legal daylight. barey got the 2nd rod set when the first rod fired.  Had regular action for about 90 minutes or so and then the bite just died.

All told I took home 2 walleyes and a 10” perch, but also caught half a dozen smallmouth bass and 4 channel cats.  For a short time it Seemed like everything wanted to take a swipe at the crankbaits I was towing.

I think I paddled about 4 miles today.  That’s plenty for my first outing of the season.  I’m good and tired.

And hopefully back at it again tomorrow AM.

Wasn’t a talent problem. Coaching and culture

I disagree.  Those individual players were not talent problems, but the team has had a talent problem for at least 15 seasons.  There hasn’t been enough of it since near the end of Ruff’s first stint.

Just bought my NYS fishing license last night. The weather’s just been so crappy down here, it just doesn’t inspire one to head out into it. I know,… that’s a really lame excuse.

I’m lame too.  This weekend will be my first outing of the season.

I got cleared to drive on Tuesday.

I just can’t get motivated to do anything. I’ve been sitting around, doing absolutely nothing for almost 4 weeks.

I liked it better when I had the built in excuse that I was not allowed to drive.

    ‘Grats on clearance to drive.

I seriously recommend you force yourself to get out and do something.

    Heading to the rink.

Finland vs Austria then Canada vs Norway.

The beer in Czechia was really hyped up and it is excellent.

Beers from continental Europe ruined me for American beers.

I’d guess what you are concerned about Weave is akin to Aud’s point to which I do agree with. It’s not so much skill or passion with Tage as much as injury concerns.

    Wrong on both accounts.

Like I said, I can’t put my finger on it, but he seems too gimmicky to be a 1C.  He’s not a one trick pony, but he sure isn’t a prototypical 1C either.  I have a gut feeling it won’t work out beyond a team with no expectations.

Which of these key people do you see as being in over their heads?

    • GM: Adams
    • AGM: Karmanos
    • Head scout: Forton
    • Player development director: Mair
    • Analytics director: Ventura
    • Head coach: Ruff
    • 1C: Thompson
    • 2C: Cozens
    • Power forward: Tuch
    • Goal scorer: Skinner
    • 1D: Dahlin
    • 2D: Power
    • Shutdown defender: Samuelsson
    • Starter: UPL
    • Captain: ???

I’d say only Karmanos and Lindy are proven fully in their position, although I would make arguments for Ventura and Dahlin. Some might add Skinner, but not me.

I presume this is rhetorical?  I’ll give the benefit of the doubt to Forton.  Beyond that I have more questions than answers.

I wouldn’t try to argue against Dahlin, but I’m not smitten either.

I can’t shake the feeling Tage is a fraud, but I can’t exactly put my finger on why either.

I didn't scapegoat anybody. Stop making stuff up to make your points.

If Okposo isn't that guy (and he isn't) then he shouldn't have been named captain just cause he was what? Likeable? Old? It was just one of many dumb things this franchise has done. He was a bad captain, simple as that. The lack of good veteran leadership on this team is a huge issue. Huge. imo the "plan" is dumb unless it has in fact just been a difference of opinion on timelines and Adams is set to shift things this off season. If they do not make moves and give Ruff what he will need to win it'll be goodbye Adams and get ready to start again.

I do laugh in general at the "inadequate from a talent standpoint" argument that I see now and again which gets juxtaposed against the how great Quinn and Benson and Peterka and Thompson etc. are. We have more first round drafted players than ANY other NHL team. We have a ton of young talent. Compare them to Boston. They have Pasternak. Offensive superstar. An aging Marchand and who as high end offensive talent? DeBrusk maybe? That's about it. Zacha is middling. Coyle is a good 2 way forward but he's no offensive star. That's it. Way less "talent" than the Sabres, and yet.....................................

Given the roster available, Who would you have chosen for captain instead? And do you really think there would have been an on ice difference?

  13. 2 hours ago, Thorny said:

    Absolutely not.

I meant what I said, and I mean it in the the macro: what the heck are we even doing here talking hockey if everything we talk about ultimately ends up bullshite: why do we talk about picks and prospects as currency if the team literally most in position to utilize said strategy in history of the league won’t do it?

    Fix your sarcasm meter.

If you want to scapegoat someone then direct your attention to the GM who put this team together and hired the HC and kept him on longer than he should have. This roster was inadequate from a talent standpoint and from the way the team was constructed. Okposo as a player and captain was an inconsequential factor in this team's failure. It's obvious that Okposo had a low-key personality and not hard in your face challenging style of leadership. He is who he is. To expect him to be something he was not was unrealistic.

Given the makeup of the team, Okposo was as good a choice as any. Actually, he was a better choice than arguably anyone else on the roster, including Dahlin.  KA is squarely to blame not just for the failures on ice.  He is also squarely to blame for saddling Okposo with a responsibility he wasn’t well enough equipped to execute upon.  There wasn’t a single player on the team that was properly equipped to do it.

Common denominator of failure in this organization.  Not putting people in places where they are equipped to succeed.  Gm, coach, assistants, captain, role players.  All under qualified to do what was needed.

    If the list starts with:

    - be healthier

..the list has already failed. You are basically typing, “if the Sabres get better luck than the average team usually does…”

Injuries are a reality. It’s like saying, “if we get a few unsustainable performances from select players, we’ll make it “. Sure. It’s not a strategy

To score more we’ll simply need a better, more well rounded roster. Some of the improvement will come internally, hopefully, but some needs to come from the outside (deal picks and prospects), and not only do the additions add on their own, they help facilitate that improvement from within

Sounds like the makings for another 5 yr plan.
