  1. His contract expired. He talks:

"You know, it doesn't need to be written, and it doesn't need to be said. For Pat LaFontaine to quit? Never. It's not in his DNA. And as much as I loved Buffalo, Patty loved Buffalo even more. … I know he didn't quit. They know he didn't quit. And they know that I know he didn't quit."

"You could take Toe Blake, Al Arbour and Scotty Bowman, and I don't think all three of them together could have done much better – or better at all," Nolan said. "It was very, very difficult. Winning is extremely hard. When you haven't got the proper people, it magnifies the problem even more.... The whole year was McDavid, McDavid, McDavid," Nolan said. "I just don't think Tim gave me a fair opportunity or got to know me. I don't think Terry and Kim got to know who I am. But when I look back on it, I'm very thankful. Buffalo is my kind of town. I loved Buffalo."

So GMTM may have truly coup the Sabres after being hired and the Pegulas chose to just let him. Would explain TP's comments on wanting to be more hands on.

I will say though that I was all for the tank to get McDavid but this certainly sullied my opinion on GMTM as a manager

  2. According to My NHL Rumors

Bucky Gleason of the Buffalo News: Sabres center Jack Eichel is eligible to sign a long-term contract extension this offseason. Ideally the sides would get a deal done this offseason so it wouldn’t become a distraction during the season. Eichel talks will be a little more complex than the talks the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid went through.

Sabres GM Jason Botterill recently said that talks will continue throughout the offseason.

The Sabres would likely want to sign Eichel to an eight-year deal, buying four years of unrestricted free agency. He wouldn’t be in the McDavid money range – $12.5 million cap hit – but it will cost a lot.

If Eichel wanted a four-year deal, he would be a UFA at 25 years old. It’s not known what he’s looking for in term and salary.

[Gleason] guessing on term and salary ranges – four years at $34 million, six years at $54 million and eight years at $90 million.

I think Bucky needs to take a hike

  4. per Brian Wilde

McDavid's contract signed today expected to be 8 yrs 12.25 AAV, a little less than initially expected

That's good news for us since that means Eichel can't ask for 13mil at least. Hopefully we can get him at 10.5mil tied with Kane, Toews, and later Price

  5. I don't think he will get a C or an A, but I kind of expect Pominville to be one of the locker room leaders this year.  His best days were here in Buffalo and I think he's going to do everything within his power to push to bring the Cup to Buffalo while he's here.  That may mean that the team outperforms expectations, starting with making the playoffs this year.  I kind of expect Pommer to impatiently push the team toward a strong start, attempting to duplicate their start of 2006-07.  The team's identity has been that of under-performers since the tank; I just don't see Pominville standing for that, knowing how good the team was in the past, and how much talent they have on the team now.

Gionta brought a level of stability and professionalism to the team; I expect Pomminstein to bring a spark and be the team's biggest cheerleader.

I like that thought, that Pommers will want to take us places

  6. Vanek still knows how to score, and has shown he can still pitch in with faster players so I'd be very interested in his return. 1 year, 2.6mil like his last contract. Let the guy just get to the front of the net and tip and deflect pucks in. Plus we'd get the around the world back in the shoot outs

  7. I'm going after Brian Boyle to help shift Dzone stuff of ROR and to bring back some of the toughness we lost with Foligno. I'd still trade Kane though, I don't trust he'll sign here for a reasonable price but at least now we aren't needing to find a Dman for him and we can open in up a bit more. Also I'm signing Chad Johnson 1yr 1.7mil like his last contract with the Flames.

    But for now

    Kane-ROR-Okposo

    XXX-Eichel-Reinhart

    Girgensons-Larsson-Pominville

    Moulson-Boyle- XXX

    Deslauriers

Maybe sign Vanek and Gionta to PTOs with the intention if some of the young guys can earn a spot we'd still have stop gaps for a year.

  8. I'd love to get Vanek cheap to just play WR to Eichel's passes to the front. Plus we could have a 2nd PP with 2 guys that are great just outside the crease. (Moulson & Vanek) Thus we'd have 2 differing styled PP attacks with ROR/Eichel shooters to Reinhart's screens with Okposo and Risto aiding. The 2nd having a more old school get the puck to the net and between our deflection and jamming we should get goals there. Plus there'd be a better chance an opponent could counter such differing PPs.

    Plus Vanek devours the Bruins
