  1. I love thus kid, but his bad offensive year has him in the CDB/GMTM dog house. Now he hasn't signed his qualifying offer.

Is he going to be traded? Is he slated as the 4th line center? Will he even be given a chance to beat out Larsson for the 3rd line center job or compete for the 2nd line wing job? Will he bolt for Europe if he doesn't get more then the qualifying offer from the Sabres? Maybe he isn't even in the Sabres plans at all for this season.

I think this kid has much more upside then Larsson and is already one of the best defensive forwards. He is a hard worker and everyone likes him in the clubhouse. His youth and position utility makes him a valuable asset.

I'd sign him for 2 years at $ amounts of $1 mill for this season and $1.25 for next. This would be an easily traded contract, but show some faith in the kid. I'd also then re-create the line that worked so well two years ago of Moulson, Girgensons and Ennis. Granted they won't be playing 1st line minutes, but I think all 3 would benefit from a comfortable line combo.

If CDB gives him a defined role the kid will blossom, even if it just as the 4th line center. Can you imagine the matchup problems if our 3rd or 4th line is Moulson Girgensons Ennis?

If he doesn't have a future here, what about a trade to Ana for right shot D Brandon Montour who dominated in the AHL last season. I think he could challenge for Franson's job this season and he'd also be exempt from the expansion draft.

Nice post.  I don't think anyone would have predicted the drop in production from Girgensons.  He's kind of put them in a tough spot because it's very difficult to understand why - equally difficult to commit to him and/or give up on him.  He got good ice time last year and there's still ice time to be had on this team (even though it certainly got tighter).  I like the numbers you propose on a 2 year deal which is what it would take to keep him - but I don't think the team is going to commit to more than a one year show me last year was a fluke.

  2. I must have watched a different interview?? I'm a psychologist and couldn't read into much of what he was saying. He was complimentary to all and very vanilla. He's been coached up well.

He was nice enough and was obviously coached into what to say - as you picked up on.  Couple things that struck me as particularly odd was his lack of being respectful to Buffalo for spending resources to acquire the rights to be able to talk to him and his representation - I think he could / should have said that.  I don't think it would have been a bad thing for him to recognize they spent a draft pick and money to fly into see me and that was an honor.  He basically said them flying in gave me practice on what it's going to be like to talk to a GM and coach on August 15th.

I also think he could have said hey they spent resources to be able to talk to me and based on the positive meeting would talk to them again if they feel it's necessary to get more questions answered from me and my team.  Instead he said they've agreed to leave me alone now.

I just think he could have come off as more respectful and possibly removing the stigma he's getting (ever how unfair) that he hasn't earned anything from the NHL.  Understand that I am fully aware that he has earned the right to do what he's doing.  I do still believe he didn't help himself in terms of how he's perceived.

  3. He was talking, being led on, by a Boston reporter

Well then he's not as mature and Harvard smart as I'd hoped - he said almost everything the wrong way and basically disrespected 2 teams now.  Unless you're a Bruins fan because it's obvious that's where he's going.

Not that it matters because if you've got the talent - you've got the talent to play well in the NHL - but he sure didn't represent himself well in that interview.

  4. Maybe I'm missing something, but why should a tenant have control over improvements to the arena? (Having said that, I suppose the Sabres have such control over their barn.)

You don't think the owner/operator of a restaurant business should be able to have input on renovations because he leases it?  You don't think he should be able to say "Hey if you change that you'll take away 3 seats at the bar and those mean $10K in revenue to me each per year"?

  5. The second Detroit should have been TB. Of course, Mirtle points out in the article that TB can't really afford him without making cuts elsewhere, but still. Better odds than Buffalo. Because of reasons.

I honestly see no way he stays in Tampa, but then again I'm JAG on a message board...

I agree with everything you've posted and I can't understand any of it.

  6. Rumor: "Leafs have a plan to give Stamkos a $3.5M marketing contract... vetted by the league and the lawyers... not in the player contract."

It's either ###### or IT REALLY IS ######.

Looks like he'd only gain 1.5 million by doing that vs NY taxes.  He'd have to work is arse off - off the ice just to get what he could easier in the U.S.

  7. I found these numbers interesting.  Might not be about money at all.  I really had no idea Canadian taxes were much worse than NY.

    As a
    Tampa Bay Times
analysis in January showed, Stamkos could net nearly the same annually after taxes in Tampa Bay at $8.5 million as $10 million in New York (Rangers, Islanders), presuming he'd be a New York City resident; Stamkos would make more over the length of the deal in Tampa because of the extra year. Stamkos would net $500,000 less annually than a $10 million deal with Detroit, another strong suitor, but, again, more over the length of the deal.

And Stamkos' hometown Maple Leafs, due to a 53.53 percent combined federal/provincial tax rate, would have to offer him $12.37 million annually over seven years to net the same as he'd make over eight years at $8.5 million in Tampa, according to national sports tax guru Robert Raiola, the director of the Sports and Entertainment group at PKF O'Connor Davis, who has professional sports clients throughout the country.

  8. Not surprising, the arena is trash. Stop funding renovations and just build a new one. Also this seems like a ploy, I doubt the Sabres ever intended to play a game in Rochester. The Sabres are just trying to push for more money in renovations when they should just put in some of there own money in if there so concerned.

    Or leave, right?

  9. I ran the numbers for that argument already in this thread. Let's take a team that finished just outside the top 10 in goals, Calgary with 231 goals. Buffalo had 201 goals. So we need 30goals to be on the edge of the top 10 in goals for. Well Jack and Sam are easily going to get at least 10 more goals next season between the two of them. You have Zemgus, Moulson, and Ennis under-performing so hard that statistically last season was an outlier (Ennis was obviously injured). Let's assume we sign Vesey. Between those 4 players you need them to account for an additional 20 goals... so I don't buy the BUF needs scorers argument that much. We Tyler Ennis alone and healthy probably adds +10 goals to the team and I think Zemgus and Moulson alone can add another 10 and that doesn't account for Vesey. Buffalo needs better GT, better defense, and consistency.

I don't think it's about just goal totals.  It's about getting goals when the average player can't.

Players like Ennis, Moulson and Zemgus need things to set up or a rebound.  Stamkos scores when only the elite can put that goal in.

  10. This is the type of work I wanted to get to eventually but I'm glad you got to it. Very nice. I'm not sold on the idea that the cap is going to shoot up anytimes soon, and I have spoken out against relying on a cap raise in the past... BUT, it is a possibility. If the Canadian dollar bounces back I think we could see a serious rise in the cap (and if Vegas is an early success).

However it's pretty great that if the cap goes up Buffalo is one of the teams that wouldn't care and will spend to it.

  11. He put up 56 as a rookie while only playing a third of the year with a linemate he had chemistry with. Add a year of development for him and Reinhart, with a better second winger, and he can't add 14 points? Pshaw I say! Stamkos hit 90 as a sophomore after having a worse rookie season than Eichel. And Eichel won't hit 70? You underestimate our franchise player.

Of course I hope he is - but I'm not ready to say he's as good as Stamkos.  Are you saying you think Jack will be in the 90's next year?
