Have you watched every game he has played? He's not a #1.

I think UPL is a good shot stopper, but his rebound control is as bad as i've ever seen. I've never seen a goalie not be able to eat pucks like UPL. Even on plays it hits him right in the chest and for a split second it looks like things are under control, somehow the puck ends up being loose and a mad scramble to get it out. Unbelievable this guy.

.and best suited for 3rd pairing duty, but KA has invested in two significantly more physical D for the 3rd pair in Stillman and Lyubishkin.  I think Joki has value and would bring a decent asset in return.  I don't mind if he comes back as a 3rd pair player, but priority No 2. this off-season, after fixing the goaltending, is a better partner for Power.

We still don’t know if Stillman can play in the NHL. I think these next few weeks is important for him. His defensive play is suspect. Unless he drastically improves I imagine they’ll want a better version of Stillman but in short term were willing to take him for relatively cheap. But I agree, finding a top-4 dmen and goalie are priorities.

If Joki goes, they’ll be in the market for two new dmen although not sure how much, if any, Ryan Johnson will need in Rochester next season.

I know the game was on espn+ tonight so i doubt anyone listened to the radio, but i have a friend who works the controls in Rochester making sure the Sabres games are broadcast on a local station there and he shared a funny story Rob Ray said tonight on the radio call.

Rob Ray said "I wish i could skate like Connor McDavid just one time" and turned it into a story about "I asked Alex Mogilny how to get faster and he told me to smoke... i didn't take his advice." 😂

Don’t forget Stillman was also out. And that could have been a difference maker had he been able to play in place of Bryson.

Bryson played awful defense at times. -2 for the night and just seemed to flounder.

Nothing against him personally. Sure he is trying. But he can’t be a regular and Buffalo go anywhere. Terrible season.

In 49 games he’s -20 on a team that is +11 in goal differential this year.

Last year, when the team was -58 in goal differential, Bryson was -9 in 73 games.

Def hurts not having those players. Still it was a tight game and the Sabres had as many good chances if not more than the Oilers. Just couldn’t score on a lot of close opportunities. Several times felt like we went right into the body of Skinner who had a really good game tonight. Great goaltending can win a ton of games.

Bryson was on the ice for all 3 Edmonton goals. Rough night for him for sure.

    Bold summer prediction.

KA will trade Jokiharju and Olofsson over the summer to raise assets to help KA get a better partner for Power (and or goaltending) and then they'll run with the Malachi Bros (Stillman and Lyubushkin) as the third pair.

For example, maybe we can work a deal with LV to get Theodore from them for Joki and Rosen.

I agree with Olofsson. I think he's played himself out of Buffalo.

I don't agree with Jokiharju though. I know he drives some people crazy, he never misses the chance to pass the puck to the other team, but even with Joki on the team the Sabres need to add a d-men. He's under contract for only $2.5 million next season, as we saw this season we need more then just 6 reliable defenseman.

For his down falls, he's still just 23 years old and has 252 NHL games played.

You're right it was a good cross-ice pass to Cozens, who missed a few good chances, including that one. But I was relieved when he came back from that blocked shot. The way he was crawling to the bench was scary. We'll see if he needs time off. Skinner missed one or two others too. The Skinner goal was a funny one...he took it away from VO, who has been snakebit lately. The Oilers missed a few great chances two including that 2 on 0 in the third. I don't know how that didn't end up in the net. Thompson hit yet another post. In the end we were beaten by McDavid, which happens to many teams.

After Tuch essp, but thankfully it was just his skate blade that broke off.

  7. What i can't believe is Mike Straw sat on this video for 4 years waiting for his big time moment to grill Harrington? Hopefully he buys a round or two for TG at elmo's next time for the ez lay up.

It's a bad look on Mike and from the sounds of it Sabres talked to him that day (the girls dad mentioned that in one of the tweets). It started with a poorly thought of tweet this weekend about the PA announcer which i dunno why Mike felt the need to tweet that. Then it ended up as a gang mentality on twitter. It went too far imo.

Meatballs needs to scratch him. Let him watch from above for a couple of games and hope that kickstarts him. Worked for Quinn.

When he gets cold, he really shuts off. And doesn't help he's a lazy type player. The second goal he just needs to put more effort on the play. ESPN+ just to justify it by saying he was tired, but he seemed full of energy when he thought he might get the puck loose. It was also probably his last shift of the period. Just needed more effort there.

    Looked up some basic stats.

    Last 14 games, 0 goals, 3 assists, -14.

Last time he scored was against Winnipeg, he had 6 SOG that game. He hasn't even reached 5 in any game during this goal-drought. Nine times he's had 2 or less SOG (0 twice, 1 five times, 2 twice).

Do you know about the growth of youth hockey here?  I know you lived in Athens, but Atlanta and hockey are completely different then 10 years ago. The Gladiators draw 5000 a night for ECHL and their fan base is primarily NW Atlanta.  There are at least 4 good junior programs, UGA hockey is the most popular club team on campus and is working toward becoming an NCAA program.  Also how many people attend college football from Atlanta each week 200K? 300K? That leaves about 6.5 million people to attend hockey, baseball, basketball etc… To succeed, the area really just needs about 50K who wish to attend on a regular basis.  That shouldn’t be a problem if the product is good.

My cousin moved to Atlanta years ago and to my surprise they were pumped to take me to a hockey game when i visited. I thought it was gonna be like beer league stuff, but it was a team in Gwinnett in the ECHL. Arena packed, everyone in jerseys, great atmosphere. Better game experience then going to a Rochester Americans game. I was like wtf, and the locals said the youth hockey scene is insane. I said how come Atlanta failed if this is such a hotbed and they said something like nobody goes to downtown Atlanta unless they have to or something like that. And this was like 10 years ago.

  10. I liked how he played. Wasn't the Steve Bernier debut some had hoped for maybe, but it was nice to have that sandpaper element in the lineup. Sabres really missed having a player like him. Would be nice to add someone else tough and with some bite to that lineup. He made a really nice pass to Cozens too. I think we'll really like Greenway the more we watch him play. His battles behind the net were fantastic in controlling possession.

With less than 2 days remaining there's fair possibility of something happening.

Although, it's hard to tell if the Sabres are buyers or sellers at this point after their recent moves  One would think it'd be obvious with their performance so far they are not sellers.

Don't think too much about it. i can assure you, the Sabres are NOT sellers.

KA needs to recognize where the Sabres are this year and still make a push to get to the playoffs.  I get not wanting to mortgage the future for rentals, and I definitely don't want to see an overpayment by him to acquire some of the necessary pieces this teams needs and has needed all year.

    1) A big physical forward who can be a presence on the ice, (Greenway, Crouse)

    2) A RD for Power or another stay at home LD for 3rd pair (Jensen, Shattenkirk, Nemeth, Seeler, Edmundson, Savard)

    3) Starting goaltender (Demko, Vejmelka, Korpisalo)

KA needs that they need to reward the players this year and show that he is willing to make a move that will help them.   I get that they have a plan, but reward the team and the city!!

    1. Crouse? What are you willing to give up?

    2. Nemeth? Seeler? Savard? Shattenkirk? None of them would help this team out enough to make a difference. Jensen just re-signed and is off the market.

    3. Hard not to be upgrade over what we have, but none of those guys will carry us to the playoffs. And you better be prepared to pay a lot.

So he's kind of like the replacement for Fitzgerald?

I think Stillman is the better player just based on basic stats. He's a year younger then Fitzgerald and has played 140 NHL games. Fitzgerald 59 career games including 0 for his new team.

    Jost was free.

In a few years this might be looked as it was free too. Sabres have a large amount of prospects, something gotta give. They have several incoming to Rochester for next season and there just isn't the space.

The way he plays he reminds me of a (smaller) Brad Brown. Brown came in a trade in 2004, was also underwhelming but his play made him sort of a cult hero for his few games that he was here for. Stillman is younger and maybe better defensively i don't know, but he'll hit anybody.

I won't pretend to know too much about Stillman, just saw him on espn+ when i watch the late games, not sure what it translates to, but if he was on the ice when Quinn got mugged yesterday, Stillman wouldv'e not let that fight happen. Tough kid, seems like a teammates bestfriend type of player.

    Time to send UPL down?

The way Anderson talked after the game i doubt it. He kept mentioning how all 3 will need to play roles in this run, how they all will have to work off each other, help each other and get better because of each other. Adams always talks about how he includes the vets and team leaders into discussion making, and also drove to Comrie's house and spend time with him when they told him he was going to go to Rochester on assignment, i highly doubt Anderson doesn't know the plan.
