30th in the league is good, not elite.  I reserve the term elite for the best of the best, not someone who had one good year finishing in that position in the league.

Good, great, elite. He is not elite. Matthews, draisatl, Ovie. Top 10 in points or top 5 in goals. Robertson is not there.

2nd and 3rd year in OHL 40+ goals each season

4th season in Kingston 23 goals in 24 games. Gets traded to Niagara and scores 25 in 38 games.

Goes to the AHL, scores 25 goals in 60 games.

First full year in the NHL, scores 17 goals in 51 games.

Last season, second season in the NHL as a 23 year old, scored 41 goals in 74 games.

    That's elite goal scoring.

I don't get to elite with him.  He is close to an elite goal scorer (has that potential) and has a very good overall offensive game.  I can get to very good/bordering on great as a player MAYBE, but not elite when you are 5 years from your draft, 30th in the NHL in scoring over the last 2 years, a below average skater who is so average defensively he isn't relied on to kill penalties ever.

His scoring stats speak for themselve. He was an absolute elite goal scorer in OHL, then in the AHL and has been lighting the league on fire ever since he came in.

That trade looks like this: Cozens, Savoie, 2023 1st, Ryan Johnson and something else like Olofsson or maybe they want another prospect like Quinn or JJP

That's too much. Dallas ain't getting that from nobody if they trade him. The equivalent of 5 first round picks and a NHL roster player?

Yes a guy going into a 3rd year with 125 points in 128 games isn't going to cost buffalo its top NHL prospect.

Please tell me who you would want if the shoe was on the other foot.

Not every top prospect is the same. Power is elite level. So if they ask for Power and Sabres say no, Dallas is SOL? Cmon.

Teams trading a player like Robertson don't have that leverage to demand the best prospect in the world of hockey.

    Bolded the important part.

    But also yes.

I don't think it'll happen either, but i also believe Rivet and Peters wouldn't mention it if they didn't have a really good lead on it. The way i see it is, similarly how when Bills signed JD McKissic but then he bailed before he signed the paperwork, it showed the Bills' cards, i think this (assuming you believe the rumor, and i do) shows Adams' cards a bit. If he inquired about Robertson, he had to have known before hand it would be a haul, but also shows he's willing to be aggressive and isn't married to all of these prospects for next 2-3 and let this rebuild slowly marinade.  Maybe they strike out on Robertson for whatever reason, maybe price is too high, but i think Adams packaging a few guys for a bigger fish will be made sooner then later.

And people have to realize it would take owen power and not some leftover Scraps

No it would not. The price would be huge but to think it would have to be Owen Power included is silly.

Kozak might be the Sabres most impressive prospect right now. Going from a late round after thought to a guy that gets heaped praise on from the coaching staff. He was great at the prospects tournament and looked good in his first preseason game culminating in a goal.

He looks like he could be a really solid two way centre threat ala his mentor this year, Michael Peca.  Really excited to see how he develops in Rochester this season. If he is strong on face-offs then that would be huge.

    He feels like found money.

People say Kozak has the potential to be a elite defensive forward in the NHL and he's always been strong player in that area. One stat ive heard mention that still makes people in hockey impressed is his rookie season in the WHL he had 29 pts and was a +27. That is unheard of in junior hockey unless you're scoring 60-70 and more points. Kozak finally did find his scoring touch while facing off against the opponents top line each night. I'm not a big +/- stat guy but that is something i've heard mentioned several times by people when discussing Kozak.

A season with Peca i can only imagine what will do for him.

I just recently moved to Buffalo for work, and will look to make sure i can make this. I'm sharing season tickets with someone so i will see if those can be sold or used up by my friend so i can join you guys. Worst case i'll join pre or post game and just sit else where.

Krebs was bad last year but no one really wants to talk about it.

I want to see him prove he can be a reliable winger before we start penciling him in for center.

I thought it was when Krebs played on the wing he struggled last season and was better at center. He's a pure playmaker. With his vision and passing ability, you're limiting him on the wing and he will never be that big time goal scorer. I'm excited to see what he can do this season after a whole off-season.

Krebs isn’t an NHLer yet.  He still sucks too much

That's harsh. The kid got traded and went straight to Rochester and then went to a poor Sabres team where he flipped between wing and center and had a few different linemates. Even still, he's a 21 year old who has just played 57 games last season and had 15 assists. He def had his downs as every rookie does, but all things considered 22pts in 57 games ain't that bad for a kid who had just turned 21 and basically got his first taste of the nhl (beside the few games he got in vegas).

Corey Pronman released his way too early draft rankings today

    1. Connor Bedard, C, Regina (WHL)

    2. Matvei Michkov, RW, SKA (KHL)

     3. Adam Fantilli, C, Chicago (USHL)

    4. Zach Benson, LW, Winnipeg(WHL)

    5. Dalibor Dvorsky, C, AIK (Sweden Jr.)

    6. Kasper Halttunen, RW, Jokerit (Finland Jr

    7. Nate Danielson, C, Brandon (WHL)

    8. Charlie Stramel, C, USNTDP (USHL)

    9. Cam Allen, RHD, Guelph (OHL)

    10. Matthew Wood, RW, Victoria (BCHL)

early word is that this is to be an excellent draft that will run much deeper than the top 10

With his long term contract in Russia and with everything thats going on over there right now, i wonder how far Michkov will drop in this draft. Unless something drastic changes over there i can't imagine a team taking a chance on him too high. His deal with St Petersburg runs for 4 more seasons (3 after the draft).

I'm a nhl draft junkie, but i haven't dug in too much yet besides the obvious guys at the top, but two of my favorite players so far going into this season for the draft is Leo Carlsson from Swedish club Orebro, he also scored in last weekends season opener, and Cal Ritchie from Oshawa.

    Zdeno Chara

    PK Subban

    Keith Yandle

    Have all retired officially.

With this news and Joe Thornton remaining un-signed, it makes Craig Anderson as the last player remaining who was drafted in the 1990's.

    8 hours ago, MattPie said:

Still surprised Suban didn't catch on anywhere. Or maybe it just wasn't worth a minimal offer to get beat up for a year to him.

I read earlier on twitter some reporter from Montreal say Subban was only willing to play one more time with Montreal or compete for the Cup with Toronto, and once he was told neither of these two were an option anymore, Subban retired.

Dallas isn't smart. They're the islanders of the west.

Why do you say that? Lundkvist is pretty good. He was drafted in the 1st round for a reason. The conditional 4th is whatever. So basically you're trading a protected 1st for a 1st round grade guy you believe can play for you immediately.

What’s this guys story?  Is he any good?

He made his North American debut last season in 42 games with the WHL’s Tri-City Americans but didn't get picked in the draft. Probably because theres not too much tape on him as previously he played in the Czech Republic second division and youth leagues. He really impressed people at the 2022 summer WJC with his performance in the QF upset win vs. the United States. He stopped 28 out of 30 shots, some of which incredible stops and was named player of the game. He won player of the game award twice at the summer WJC.

However, Suchanek is 2023 draft eligible, but can skip it if he signs before the season starts. If he's unsigned when the season starts he will be back in the draft next june.

Me too. But finally a GM has built this team through the draft. Plus it seems like the scouts are finding talent past round 1.  That’s the key to putting together a great team.

I'm excited about what the data-driven hockey "nerds" will be able to come up with this year. The Sabres seem to have drafted well and things seem to be coming along nicely, but Adams has build a very impressive hockey department with Karmanos, Ventura, Galamini, and Barlowe. People around the hockey who follow this type of stuff closely say it's a incredible talented staff the Sabres have assembled.

Holtz is playing for NJ and scored 2 yesterday.  He was taken one pick before Quinn and played last season in the AHL and a few games with NJ as well.

Each team looks at this tournament differently. I don’t have a problem with Quinn and JJ not playing but it wouldn’t have been blasphemous if they did.

JJP has played in two of these tournaments already, so i don't mind him missing.

As for Quinn, i was surprised to see Holtz on the Devils roster.

I'm happy the prospects are doing good but this "prospect challenge" doesn't get me excited .

I've seen tons of prospects come and go in the buffalo system that have dominated this  Tournament and have not been that successful at the next level.

I mean it's only a 3-game tournament and teams don't always use their best 18 skaters. I think your expectations are just too high.

That said, pre-covid JJ Peterka was one of the best performers. He put on a show in each game he was in. Last season, JJP and Jack Quinn were very good, but the best player was probably Brett Murray who then followed with his best season in his career and was steady during his call-up to the Sabres. I think the reason the Sabres prospects prior to 2018 not having success isn't because what they did in the tournament doesn't translate but because the Sabres just lacked good prospects.

They have some really good prospects now and it's worth going to see them play imo.

  15. This is awesome news, essp if more of the prospects move up to the SHL at some point this season from their junior teams.

As of now, looks like William von Barnekow (Malmo Redhawks) and Linus Sjödin (Rogle) are the only two who will start the season in the SHL.

    Their season starts tomorrow btw.

  16. Some thoughts of mine after attending the game tonight.

-Kozak looked really good. It's funny how similar his game and style (and story) is to Brandon Hagel who we lost bc of our own competence. Kozak looks like the real deal.

-Hope Bloom is okay, he left holding his shoulder. I havn't been much on twitter so i don't know if theres any update on him?

-Never heard of this guy until tonight but Nolan Burke i thought played extremely well. He scored in the first, was constantly providing pressure, nearly connected a pass to Passolt in the second that wouldv'e been a sick play. He was good in every area of the ice.

-He has some growing/developing to do, but i really like Lindgren. At this point it might even sound like bias bc i was really impressed with him at development camp as well. His skating, his vision, his passing, all suburb. Yes he makes mistakes. He tried a long outlet pass that went just got intercepted last second, and unlucky for him, thats when Montreal scored i believe goal #2. Someone in this thread mentioned put "48" on Savoie and it's like watching Briere, i agree, as for Lindgren, it's like watching Shea Theodore. Fun player with a lot of offensive creativity.

-Won't beat the drum on Rosen bc it seems it's been well covered here. I share same opinions. I wasn't impressed in the first but his game got better and better as it went on. Nice block shot at the end. I do wonder if he is gonna play Saturday, he took several heavy hits tonight. I think there was atleast 3 that i wondered if he'll get up and rush to the bench. He didn't, but just on the caution side i wonder if they go easy on him.

Was cool to see Harry Neale in the building tonight. That man loves hockey.

I thought all your disappointments played really well today. Krebs and JJ were all over the ice. Östlund was superb holding on to the puck and setting up teammates. He also scored a beautiful one timer. Johnson uses his skating to make strong plays all over the ice. I thought he did it today.

It is hard though in a 3 on 3 tournament to get a real idea for players.

Same. I had no issues with any of the guys he mentioned. Also, Johnson is just so silky smooth, he was impressive. He's never going to be a offensive machine so maybe in a setting like today he might not look the greatest but he just skates so well and you can just tell he's a extremely smart hockey player. He's got a future in the NHL for sure. I really enjoyed his media sessions this past week too, and i'm not as worried about him leaving as i was before this camp started. Honestly, i wouldn't be surprised if he signed next week.

Two other guys that i was really impressed with was Mats Lindgren on defense and Jake Richard at forward. Lindgren skating was amazing along with his stick handling. Richard is a offensive player, you can tell he has a sense for the goal as he drives to the net.

I thought the two best players were Quinn and Kulich. Quinn was just well above everybody, seemed like a ringer when he was on the ice. Kulich doesn't come across as a raw player. I was very impressed by him.

Thanks for the insight! This jives with other things that I’ve read. Apparently, this question has been asked a lot.

Some of the people from the Poland subReddit say that Czechoslovakia and Slovakia are more mountainous and therefore concentrated more on winter sports.

    No problem.

Czech the #1 national sport is hockey. Every city there has ice rinks. Kids grow up with the sport. And govt invests in hockey.

In Poland soccer is king. On top of just hockey rinks, but lack of coaches and training facilities.

It sounds like maybe you’ve been there?

For Poland, which is just a little bit bigger than the size of Texas, is literally surrounded on all sides by countries like Finland, Sweden, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Slovakia, and Latvia even… Not to mention Russia…. It just seems like a great big hole in the middle of a hockey rich area.

I was born and raised in Poland.

Germany is wealthy, while Czech, Sweden or Finland weren't destroyed like Poland was in ww2. Slovakia and Latvia are interesting though, i also always wondered how such a small and poor country got into ice hockey as much as they did.

    Did not see that coming.

In late 1990's / early 2000s, a ski jumper emerged by the name of Adam Malysz, and he became one of the best ski jumpers ever in the sport and popularity in the sport went all the way up. Malysz out of his own pocket and many sponsors then invested in the sport and he was very active. Since he retired, Poland has been a ski jumping power house in the world with multiple very good ski jumpers, including Kamil Stoch, who is going to retire a legend in the sport too. Now everyone loves it, and every event is a huge tv ratings event in Poland.

With so many countries in that part of the world having really good national teams or other in-house competitive leagues, why doesn’t a country large as Poland have its own hockey infrastructure?

Easy answer is just money. There is not many rinks in Poland to even have a place to begin to play. Poland got pretty crushed during the 2nd world war and then until early 1990's we were under Soviet rule, so rebuilding was a slow process until we got our independence.

Even the soccer team, has had a resurgence in the last 12-14 years, but prior to that they were not good besides in the 1970s when they were a power before money ruled the sport. There was no modern soccer stadiums or facilities until around 2010. Even the first highway in Poland wasn't build until like 2010.

Polish player like Wojtek Wolski who made the NHL recently, grew up in a wealthy family in Poland and moved to Toronto area at a young age where his hockey talents took off.

Most popular sports in Poland: hockey, volleyball and ski jumping.
