Most likely this is the agent looking for leverage in negotiations

Yeah i agree. And everybody knows all the assets the Sabres have so it makes it sound realistic.

This time a year ago the Sabres were linked with Jason Robertson (via kevin weekes if i recall) and then during the season it was Timo Meier. Now it's Zegras.

That said, one of these times it'll be true.

What would it take? Power? Power +?

He’s an RFA. How’s that work - like a Drury sign and trade?

    Definitely not Owen Power.

One of Benson/Savoie/Kulich would be a start, first round pick, UPL and something else im guessing.

Goaltending - I doubt we’ll carry 3 goalies.  Tokarski was brought in to be the 3rd goalie.  Levi is the starter, UPL is the backup and Comrie gets traded.

Defense - We carry 8 with Stillman and Clague winning 7/8.  Bryson sent down as he has no trade value. Pairing not reliant on R/L combos.  Dahlin-Mule, Power-Clifton, Johnson/Joki.

Forwards - Rousek makes the team as the 13th forward, but Kulich really hard pushes for a job.

Metsa is the big camp surprise.  He also outplays Bryson and gets an NHL deal once he is returned to Roch.  Joki and JJP also have great camps.

Biggest camp disappointment are UPL and Comrie as they continue to show they aren’t good enough.

They can't possibly keep 3 goalies again.

I agree- Metsa is a interesting player. Captain of the NCAA champions. Really hope they get him signed.

Well, I haven't been tracking the story that closely; there was phone rifling and presumed that he was ogling people in the photos? I don't know how substantiated that last bit is. In any case, "unlock your phone and give it to me" is bad enough.

    This story is just weird.

Kozak is only 20. Even good prospects like Quinn and JJP struggled in the NHL at 20. I think Kozak will need another couple years in the AHL to really fulfill a bottom 6 roll in the NHL

    yup, i agree.

  6. I know this isn't what you were asking (i already put my input in) but in the hockey news fantasy guide magazine, they ask the panel for their sleeper pick for the NHL season and Ryan Kennedy selected Jiri Kulich.

Everyone else said a player with NHL games under their belts like Byfield or Connor Brown.

That’s kinda where it ends for me with Kozak.  He’s been compared to Mike Peca and Paul Gaustad.  Uh…he isn’t in the same stratosphere as those guys.  Peca was a PPG player in the AHL and one of the most ferocious hitters of his era.  Goose was a 6’5” behemoth that was a .54 AHL PPG player that dominated the faceoff dot and played exception D.

The comparison Mike Weber once used on Sabres live for Kozak was a center version of Adam Mair. Kid is super strong, tough to play against, good forechecker, penalty killer, win important faceoffs,  can handle himself, and can put up some offensive numbers 2 goals, 3 assists in 14 playoff games.

Also, Kozak had a slow start last season because he was battling some injuries early on.

Ventura guests on the EBW podcast. Interesting if you’re into analytics. Talks about building up sabres analytics side as well as a lot of data and process stuff.

also interesting is the chat about the Champions Hockey League (euro top teams from diff countries play each other). They are trying out 3 new rules:

Scoring on PP does not end PP.

    Short handed goal ends PP.

Goal on delayed penalty does not cancel the ensuing PP.

Very cool interview. Thanks for sharing. Was fun listening and getting that perspective. None of the local shows ever get that kind of view into the operations like this.

Wondering if people have a sleeper pick to make the NHL roster this year. A player who rarely if ever gets mentioned as being in the mix for an NHL roster spot.

My sleeper pick is Brandon Biro.  He was having a point per game season in Rochester when he was injured. Had he been healthy he might have been the call-up rather than Rousek. He plays wing and centre. He’s in the same age range as Rousek, Murray and Weissbach. I think he pushes hard for the 13th forward position.

Tyson Kozak. He'll be in Buffalo at some point this season. Peca raved about him last season. Energy guy, plays with grit, can score, plays hard every shift, draws penalties, will be a very solid 4th liner. He'll get a look this season. He started last season banged up and but once he got going he was one of the more reliable players on the Amerks down the stretch. I was at prospects tournament on Friday night and he was outstanding again.

  10. My takeaway from today: Benson is fantastic. Really solid playmaker who threads difficult passes. Also super focused on his defensive game. Was always back in the d-zone…often back before the dman. Almost always broke up the play.

Standouts to me: Novikov (just a bully on the puck with offensive instinct), Neuchev (skill for days), Kisakov (really good movement and finishing) Richard (big boy who can skate and shoot), Berndtsson (scored a few).

So does anyone know if Nadeau or Ostland are eligible to play for the Amerks postseason?

Ostland isn't here to play. He just came to get checked out by Sabres doctors and is hanging out to see the culture in Rochester and met teammates. Isn't even on the ice.

I mean they dressed 11 forwards and 7 D last game.  Seems like they could use a forward or two.  Unless Biro or Warren are back for this series.

Good point. I didn't realize they were so thin at forward. Biro is out for the season btw.

That would be interesting to see Nadeau get some playing time.

    Some more reinforcements.

I don’t know what the Östlund situation is but if they have a chance at some point to add Nadeau and Östlund to the lineup that would be big.

Not sure if you're talking about this season still or next, regardless i doubt Nadeau plays unless theres a bunch of injuries. And Östlund isn't here to play, forgot where i read it, probably Lance, they have Östlund here to check out the facilities, meet the team and coaches and sell him on the culture they have.

Surprised Scott Mayfield isn't getting more love as a potential add in this thread.  6'5 220 lbs right shot plays 20+ mpg defensive style.  Chips in with a fight or two and "broke out" offensively this past year with 24 points.

He would compete with Jokiharju for the #4 out the gate and his presence would provide some insurance to soften the blow when Samuelsson gets banged up.

I like the Mayfield idea. He's the type of player this team needs imo. A bruiser and plug on the PK.

  15. Interesting but not exactly surprising. Every time somebody speaks about Rousek they always speak very highly of him, either Paul Hamilton, Lance, or most recently Duffer and Marty with Kris Baker on the Sabres live podcast. Rousek is a top contributor on the Amerks and showed flashes with his speed and hands in his short time with the Sabres.

But, it's obvious he doesn't fit in a top-6 role. And from what these guys say, is he's viewed as a bottom line, energy, "bulldog" type player. Maybe he doesn't view himself as a fourth liner and grinder and views himself as a top-6 and a guy who gets plenty of PP time?

I could see him not being happy with how the Sabres view him and go somewhere where he's much more comfortable playing hockey, even though, the glory and money is less.

Just bought season tickets to split with a friend for the first time in my life, something I dreamed about when I was 10 years old.

    What am I in for?

They also do some cool season ticket holder events, such as paint the ice and Halloween skate. Pretty cool watching so many games at that arena and then skating on that ice, and a "state of the sabres" type event with Kevyn Adams.

Frank Seravalli wrote a piece on 'DailyFaceoff' titled, '10 burning questions facing the NHL’s 16 non-playoff teams'. Number 4 is about the Sabres:

    4. Is there a better positioned non-playoff team than Buffalo?

One rival NHL GM quietly predicted it months ago, so we wrote it down: “the Sabres will be the Beast of the East in two years.” Now that we’ve watched it all come together, it’s hard to argue with the notion – particularly with No. 1 overall picks Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power forming twin tower pillars on Buffalo’s blueline. Dahlin will receive Norris Trophy votes this spring and Power will appear on ballots for both the Calder and All-Rookie team. Oh, yeah, and center Tage Thompson was gunning to do something no player 6-foot-7 or taller has done in NHL history in scoring 50 goals and 100 points in the same season. That’s a pretty strong foundational core, bolstered now with the arrival of goaltender Devon Levi. More than that, as Buffalo battled for their playoff lives into the second week in April – trying to snap the longest current playoff drought in North American pro sports – coach Don Granato has them believing. It’s happening. And the Sabres have the most enviable salary cap table in the league. Tell us: Who is better positioned?

    https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/10-burning-offseason-questions-facing-the-nhls-16-non-playoff-teams-2

This pretty much reinforces what most of us already know or believe...that this team is ascending and will be there sooner rather than later with some tweaks and reinforcements...but it's nice to see that 'outsiders' have taken notice and feel similarly.

    Discuss...

This is all great and this will keep us excited all throughout summer waiting for next season but first time since they last made playoffs this team is going to have immense pressure heading into next season. Which is also exciting but some teams don’t always do well when expectations are risen.
