Thornton and Marleau aren't leaving San Jose unless they get a sweet deal from a definite contender. Vrbata left PHX once and learned that he's not good anywhere else. Alfredsson isn't coming here and likely retires. Grabovski is working on an extension with Washington. That leaves Moulson, Stastny, Legwand and Jagr. You'd need three of them to make this offense somewhat decent.

Who is coming up next year? Zadorov and Risto aren't going to save the offense. Armia looks like he'll need another year in Rochester. There really isn't anybody coming up.

I agree if this team has sunken this low why not suck one more year for a chance at two franchise players!

    Two clarifications:

    1) I said in the McDavid derby. I am not counting on winning the lottery. Eichel looks just as promising, and after the two franchise players, there are a few more Reinhart-level first-line forwards as well. We need another first-line forward to go along with whoever we pick this year. We will probably need to finish in the bottom five to get one.

    2) I was talking about making a team-changing impact next year. Give Girgs another year or two, and the two d-men even longer. Grigo maybe not at all.

You want a franchise player for the future we need to be at the bottom 3 next season. No need to rush the kids. Plus with the new management style of letting the kids develop into men and giving them time I think it's a good chance we finish at the bottom. If any team can't afford another bad season it's Edmonton. We are bad this year but they have been bad for how many years now. They need to make an effort now to get better. We still are in stage one. There are no unrestricted free agents upcoming this year except Vanek that are going to help the offense. It's a strong possibility that we are in the McDavid sweepstakes!

Read everyone elses post. Both of our possible picks are looking to be higher than our first pick of the last draft. Risto could very easily be playing on this team and would be if it wasnt historically awful. That is really good for a defense-man. There are also 2 guys drafter after him that are playing regular minutes in the league.

Reinhart is ready to play in the NHL right now, so is bennett, so is eckblad, and so are a few others. Those guys will be on rosters next year, two of them might be on ours.

My personal opinion is that since the new management coming in these players getting drafted in the first round are going back to their respected league before they are on the roster full time. I don't care if we have 2 top five picks this year. Last years draft was regarded as one of the best since 2003. Have u guys listened to Nolan talk about the kids they need more time and that's what's going to happen. They are not going to rush these players like Edmonton is doing. Look how well that's going for them. Not saying Hall and Nugent-Hopkins are bad but that team has been bad for awhile now. Look at Darnell Nurse they are not rushing him like they did with other top picks. They have new management as well. You can Think what u want but whoever they draft this year might get a sampling of games and that's it. This team won't be much better next year so rushing picks is foolish. Just look at the Grigo situation.

You will be wrong and everyone will point and laugh about it whenever they see my signature!

If all of Buffalo's 1st from this years draft are not in the lineup full time this year what makes u think that there pick from this year will be in next years lineup? Do u see the new management style happening here?

  5.

5 of the top 10 are playing for their clubs right now. that is if you dont include Risto......

also of the top 25 or so picks there are 3 or 4 forwards who could be in our top six this year. Right this minute. Especially Drouin

What u forget that draft was suppose to be one of the better ones since the 2003 drafts. Whoever this team drafts this year will be going thru development under this new management. They are not going to use the Regier and Edmonton style to develop these players! That's why I said it's going to be 3-5 years before we see playoffs. With fewer high end talent hitting unrestricted free agency the years of a quick turn around isn't going to happen.

  6.

Well for the first pick it'd be one year at most probably, but once the 2015 draft passes it's time to build a real team instead of tanking.

I totally agree but still think whoever they draft in 2015 still won't be ready for full time nhl ice.

    We desperately need wingers.

U should say we definetly need goal scorers and top 6 players!

If the Islanders think they will be in the McDavid/Eichel sweepstakes, they may allow us to do just that. Imagine having the 1st overall and the 4th overall picks and taking Bennett and Dal Colle... man would that speed up a rebuild.

It would speed up the rebuild but I still believe whoever is taken in the draft this year or next is still at least a couple of years before touching nhl ice on a regular basis. That's why I think it's going to be 3-5 years before we are playoff bound

  8. I still see the Sabres being 3-5 years before they make the playoffs. No matter who they draft this year and in 2015 they won't be ready to step in right away. Besides Armia they don't have anyone that is a pure goal scorer in the system. It's going to take awhile to clean up this mess. None of these kids they draft in 2014 are going to step into the nhl. Plus with the change of management into developing these kids and with Nolan behind the bench no matter who they draft they will be right back in junior the next year. There are no great unrestricted free agents this year unless you want Vanek back. This is going to take some time.

  9. The players i was most impressed with were Sam Reinhart, Micheal DalColle, Nikita Scherbak and Nikolai Goldobin. Goldobin looked very skilled with the puck but im afraid he will be one of those lazy players at the next level. Even the announcers said he just has that easy going attitude. Reinhart seemed very smooth. Seemed like he was in a higher class then everyone else. Great puck control, smooth passing, great backchecking, he also scored and assisted on a goal.

I love Dal Colle's size. From reading articles it was always something that i liked about him. But tonight i finally saw him play. He is an animal. Kind of like Girgensons. He schooled Ekbald on one play which caused Ekbald to penalize Dal Colle, otherwise it would of been a odd-man rush for his team. Seemed to have very good hands. His style of play is very similar to Malkin.

It's funny but I thought those same 4 players stood out to me as well. Both Scherbak and Goldobin stood out to me because they can skate and have skill. Reinhart has a great all around game. I was also impressed by Ekblad he seems like a big defenseman that took control at times. Lemieux seem okay as well. I was mainly looking at skating and there skill set. Let's face it skating is huge at the next levels. I still see the Sabres being 3-5 years before they make the playoffs. No matter who they draft this year and in 2015 they won't be ready to step in right away.

  10. Give it some time and some more practices. This team played two of the more entertaining games against Toronto. I hope who ever they hire to be GM will keep Nolan around. I'm a big fan of him coaching. Hard work and compete is what's it's all about. Surround him with some good players and see what he will do.

  11. Give Teddy a few games to see what they've got, first.

But if he doesn't see what he needs to see, I have no problem seeing Porter, Adam, Sulzer and McNabb instead of Risto, Larsson, Girgs and Zadorov. The latter three are probably going to be better for it, and it's not like the Sabres are going to be any worse.

But for God sakes put Grigo in a position to succeed.

I'm not a fan of Porter or Sulzer but I would rather the youngsters get a ton of ice in whatever league they get sent back down to and learn the game and improve there before coming back to the NHL. Did I happen to mention how happy I am that Regier and Rolston are finally gone! I have been wanting Pegs to get rid of Regier since he took the team over. Don't get me wrong he got a lot of value out of some the players he recently traded the last 2 seasons but he was here way too long and his tenure on this team was getting old.

Yeah, his statement was something that many of us agree with... He said players that young don't learn by losing every night. Makes sense to me. Better they develop elsewhere until they're ready to play an "NHL-level game" on a nightly basis.

I'd send Risto to Rochester, Z back to London, and maybe Girgs back to Rochester in favor of one of the older guys. Grigo is a tough case. No way in hell he should have been kept with the Sabres last year. Now he is sort of stuck up here it seems. Can't be sent to Rochester, which is where he really belongs.

More of a reason why Darcy should have been let go sooner. Never really addressed any of the Center needs until way too late!
  12. For the record, I think that Ted Nolan was one of the most over-rated coaches in Sabres history. The whole "hardest working team" in hockey and the fighting were entertaining but his philosophy was basically let the other team take 75 shots at Hasek, block about 25 and then when they are frustrated and tired score a timely goal.

It was basically the rope a dope of hockey.

The notion that he worked well with younger players was also over blown. He worked well with marginal players who were grateful for the opportunity. He was knocked out of the playoffs largely because he tried to out tough the Flyers. The next year under Ruff, they utilized their speed and won rather easily.

All that being said, he is a good guy, a passionate guy and he can be entertaining for about a year and maybe with age and maturity he has developed a better feel for the X's and O's.

If the new GM is more progressive in his approach to the game, it would be surprising if he kept Nolan.

I think Ted is a good hire and I thought he did a great job with what he had to work with. It's funny that the first guy that comes to mind with Patty is Ted Nolan. Come on Pat was a world class player so he must have thought very highly of him as a coach. Think what you want of him. Past is the Past. He will get more out of these guys the Rolston!

  13. HOORAH!!!! Pat LaFontaine BLEEDS blue and gold - this is a great day for the Sabres!

I couldn't agree more. I'm sure some might not be happy about Ted coming back but I'm more than thrilled with him coming back. I met Ted in Las Vegas after the Kings Colorado game and he deserves another shot at coaching in the NHL. I liked him when he coached the Sabres.

  14. Here's the real important thing to note on Nolan. The Sabres let him go in 1997. He didn't land another real coaching gig until Moncton of the Q hired him in 2005. Now there are stories that he had random offers here and there, but what exactly happens to keep a guy away from coaching for 8 years? This guy was poison, there's no doubt in my mind. Hopefully he has straightened that out.

I don't buy it. He coached the Islanders as well. I like Ted and it seemed like they played hard under him for what he had to work with.

  15. Might as well start it.

Although I'd prefer someone with no previous ties to the Sabres, if we're going to have someone with previous ties, I'm glad it's him. As most people here know, I'm not a fan of letting good coaches go, and he was a good one. His work was incomplete when he left, and I'm glad he'll get a chance to resume it.

I agree I'm a big fan of Teddy. I think it's an interim spot to see how this team does under him and if it goes well then it's long term
