You have to have a solid veteran or two to build a young team around. I don't know if it's such a good idea to trade every unrestricted free agent without offering them a contract. It should be very interesting to see who gets moved.

Getzlaf and Perry: good examples. Zetterberg and Datsyuk: examples of when the game wasn't scouted as well overseas and outside of North America.
Very true on scouting overseas with Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Players like that just don't slip by most good scouts. U won't see the Wings sneak players like that again.

The thing about Murray that I like is he is concentrating on scouting these junior players. I can see him moving a few of these second rounders in this years draft and possibly next years 2nd rounders to acquire a couple of first round targets in the next two drafts that he is eyeing.

Absolutely. Our best chance to get those players will be our top pick this year and next.
But Anaheim got their pair at picks 19 and 28, and Detroit got theirs in the late rounds.
We were lucky on Hasek, and Perreault.
We were smart to get Lafontaine, but we were bad to get the player we needed to trade for him.
At some point, something like that will happen again.
In the meantime, you do everything you can to improve your roster to increase the odds.
I still want McDavid badly on this team. A player that is being compared to Sid stat wise and is a student of the game doesn't come along every year.

Murray's take seems to be it's about keeping a steady stream of young players coming, then acquiring good players however you can get them.
When you have a good team it's easier to add pieces thru free agency or a trade if the team is good. Most players want to be on solid teams. Anaheim built around Getzlaf and Perry and those two are pretty darn good to build around. We have nothing close to that in Buffalo. Detroit has Datsyuk and Zetterberg and we have nothing close to those two. Yes you can build a team without landing a top 3 pick but it's not easy.

Is anyone sold on Grigs?
Still a very high pick to reach on a player. His skating and work ethic are brutal. He needs to get with Girgs and work out with him and the skating coach.

The plan was to bottom out. He enacted that plan with his boss's blessing. Then they canned him anyway.
I'm glad Darcy's gone and I don't want him back but it's tough to criticize him for having a bad team in a year where they were trying to have a bad team. Criticize him for having bad teams in years where they were trying to have a good team.
I can agree with this but I think the plan was to bottom out and get a top 3 pick in the next 2-3 drafts. Plus I'm not really sold on Grigs I think there was a reason why all those teams were passing him by in the draft. I think JT Compher is going to be a better player than Grigs.

Yeah, it is almost inconceivable how an NHL roster could be so devoid of top-level talent.
That's what happens when you decide to draft a lot of defenseman. Then throw in a lot of late runs to screw up a better pick and you have a mediocre roster. Plus you think of all the seconds he gave up for rentals how retarded. We are in year 1 of this cleanup I still think we are 3-5 years before making playoffs and that means the tank must keep rolling!

Was playing around with historical stats yesterday and the worst +/- posted by any player over the past 15 years or so was a -46. Weber has a good chance to eclipse that given his current pace of almost -1 per game.
Problem not only is the defense but the lack of goal scoring! This team doesn't have many games with 3 or more goals do they. And when they do finally start scoring more the other team seems to put more in the net.
you don't need prize free agents, you just need 3-4 vets to play here. Ott could be signed long term either now or in the offseason. Other guys can appear. If they draft Reinhart he will be a Sabre most likely next year. We have to see how the peices fall post trade deadline and post July 1.
I still think whoever they draft will get 10 games or less and then sent back to their respected league. This is the new management style to develop these players. I don't know about you but as bad as this season is we have to be just as bad next year to have a shot at McDavid.

That all depends on what you trade them for and what you get this summer.
Whoever they draft will still be in juniors. And most prized free agents ain't coming to a team in total rebuild mode!

The team that takes the ice next season will have a totally different look, IMO.
You don't want to be to much better next year the key is McDavid. He has been pretty hyped for some time now. Bad thing all these late season runs hurt this squad for the future. We could have been top 3 last year in a great draft class. Now we might be picking 1-3 in a mediocre class. It figures that's Buffalo's luck. We still need to endure one more $hitty season to get this team better.

O I think mr Tim Murray knows exactly who he wants to keep and what his plan is going forward.
Problem is you need some key veterans around to build this young team. I don't know if it's smart to trade Ott or Moulson as much as some people want them gone!

2 points and a +2 for Stafford. Not too shabby.
Stafford has been playing really well since Nolan took over as coach. Still not worth what Darcy is paying him.
How can Weber go from a +3 last season to a -32? Did he take a blow to the head to forget to play defense? Cut him loose and maybe he will find his game with some other team. The defense is in need of a talent infusion.
We need him as tank commander next season. We need McDavid!

In that last skirmish, if you replace Leino with Moulson we are almost assured a goal there.
The tank rolls on but I really feel bad for the Sabres players, hey worked hard to get back in the game only to lose to a heartbreaker.
They need to keep this up for one more season. Yeah it sucks but if we land McDavid it will be worth it!

Weber is terrible. End of story but we have to keep him around for at least another season to keep the tank rolling.

We'll the good thing about this lose in regulation is that both Edmonton and Calgary won tonight! If Enroth feels bad it's only going to be worse next season when we have to keep the tanks going for McDavid!

If Buffalo drafts a defenseman with their 1st pick when they are offensively challenge I think people will be pissed. We need Reinhart or Bennett with that first pick if we have a top 3 pick. Also It all depends on what New York does with that pick they traded us. If I'm another team wanting Vanek I don't plan on giving up a lot for him since he's going to test the market. Plus watching Vanek in New York is he's been very lazy. I'm not spending big money on a player that isn't going hard all game. To me Tavares is worth every penny. I'm sure management and teammates are pissed since he turned there offer down. The message it's sends is so bad. He knows he's going to get paid bank. I still think he goes to Minny after Heatley is gone at the end of the season.

Vanek isn't coming back end of story. I still think he replaces Heatley at the end of the season. Buffalo actually has a better chance at Heatley since Murray and Danny were both with Ottawa. Not that I want Heatley but Murray is going to make some sort of moves or the fans are gonna be pissed if it's the same squad like this season. I'm all for one more. $hit year if we have a solid shot at McDavid. But that's just me. A player like McDavid doesn't come around that often.

Why is everybody so set on trading Moulson? We already got a 1st rounder in that deal. We have a chance to keep a potential first liner AND a 1st round pick. This trading the entire team for draft picks and prospects is really getting out of hand. A line needs to be drawn somewhere. Outside of a Miller deal, that line should already be drawn.
Yes, I am aware this is assuming Moulson wants to re-sign.
I agree if we trade Moulson who in the heck is going to put the puck in the net and you lose another solid player for what a guy that might make the team in 3-4 years. A team that's gonna trade for Moulson is going to land you probably a 1st rounder in the 20's. We can't lose every veteran on this squad. I would like to keep this same $hit squad for one more year minus miller so we have a solid shot at McDavid. A player like McDavid doesn't come around that often and I would like to get him! Then after next season it's all about putting together the best possible team.

No, we need to re-sign most of these guys. The Tank must roll on and Ville shouldn't be bought out, we need him as our Tank Commander :P
I'm all for one more year at the tank job and a solid shot at McDavid. We know Leino sucks but we still need some salary on this team so we don't fall below the league minimum. Even if we land a top 3 pick this year we could use at at one more to help out. Players like McDavid don't come around that often. Right now we have one second line and 3 fourth lines.

How about this idea?
Miller to St. Lois for a 1st, Halak, and a prospect.
Send Halak to Washington for Nevurith, Erat, and a pick (for taking the problems off their hands)
I would be up for that St Louis deal if it's Ty Rattie as the prospect.

Yeah this. Part of me wants Miller traded and then the other half is saying what could we get for him. A top prospect and a first would be great but the first is going to be real late . It's going to be interesting to see what Murray has in store. I notice Miller plays great in Olympic years so he upped his trade value at least!

Like another guy said JT Compher they liked so much that's why they moved Sekera. I'm really high on Compher if he didn't get hurt with team usa he would have been on that junior team. I think he going to be better than Grigs.
