I feel like the trades were ill advised. The returns were not great and draft picks who won’t have an impact for years. We could have easily afforded Kane and ROR. I think with a better coach and adding Skinner and Dahlin to last years team, we would be a strong contender now.
-
I know its unrealistic but if sabres are not in playoff race at trade deadline then we should trade Skinner and resign him as a free agent. This would allow us to accumulate more assets to shorten the rebuild.

This might be the most played out argument on hockey forums. Go look at Edmonton, they have a bunch of guys who "hit". How's Vegas doing this year? They have the top 2 hitters in the league. The team isn't whimpy. They lack talent not toughness.
Agree with this statement as clearly talent is the problem. I was responding to the poster who was impressed by the fact the Okposa was 3rd on the team in hits. Unfortunately devoid of talent for 6 million a year...

And yet, he is 3rd on the team in hits.
This is indicative of an extremely wimpy team. Besides Ristolainen and Bogo, is there anyone else who hits?

I like Okposo for his leadership and character unfortunately he seems reluctant to go to the net. He is not much of a physical presence despite his size. He plays a soft perimeter game.

Cap issues are manageable assuming Sabres get more primary scoring from Mittelstadt, Thompson and some other forward not named Skinner, Eichel or Reinhart. Couple that with continued development of the defense, I could see a "stand pat" and retain our core working longer term.
The issue happens if JBot has to go after scoring to supplement our Big 3.
I don't see a realistic scenario to get out from KO's contract. The lowest payroll team this year is $4M above floor, no team is going to take on KO contract for that purpose. I'm against trading assets to pay for a GMTM mistake.
Very reasonable approach, but assuming JBot wants some additional scoring to supplement big 3, its definitely a problem but the Seattle expansion draft would be another option to dump the contract but we would have to give up assets.

How much do people want Duchenne as our #2 center? if you think he is very good, he certainly fills a major need. To sign him and Skinner would require moving Okposo. Would you trade with Ottawa now for an extended Duchenne (assume 7yr 49) for Okposa, Guhle and a number 1? Feel free to make modifications that you think Ottawa would accept.
-
I would love to see the Sabres extend Skinner and sign Matt Duchenne in free agency. To do this they would have to free up some cap space. What would we have to give someone like Arizona to take Okposa? I'm thinking Ghule and a first round pick.
-
I don't think JBOTS moves any of the first round picks. I also don't think he has any interest in adding any veterans older than 30 with significant contracts, unless we can rid ourselves of the contracts of Okposa or Sobotka. Unfortunately Casey Mittlestaat is going to take a few years to develop..
-
No one wants Toews salary. Thats why they would have to take cap dumps like Okposa and Sobotka to make the deal work.

I agree. This is why I mentioned that the Jets effectively became a win now team with those deals. They are all fine and dandy, but if they don't win a cup in the next 2-3 years, it's not going to get any easier.

Speaking of Myers, that "best trade ever!" chant Jets fans levied on the Sabres and Kane for a few years after that trade isn't looking too smart, now. What do they have to show for it? Armia gone for nothing. Lemieux an afterthought. Stafford a distant memory. Looking to unload Myers. So they got a 1st, who turned into Roslovic, who's plateaued this season so far with 9 points in 40 games (14 in 31 last season).
We got a first for Kane. And Bogosian.
"Best trade ever!" it was not.
Had Kane not had his few off the ice incidents, and had Bogo been healthy, the trade would have been a huge win for us.

Really? Little's contract is already basically there.
He's making 5.3 million, and has 6 more points (and one less goal) on a vastly deeper offensively Jets team. 5 years left after this one, Okposo's has 4. Little is 31, KO 30.
I’ll give you the contracts are comparable, the difference is the Jets are competing now for a cup and he’s an important piece whereas we’re nowhere near ready to compete (2-3 years away) and Okposos contract is just an albatross preventing us from acquiring talent to compete.

With their aging players (Wheeler, Little, Byfuglien) signed to new long term deals, with many young players coming up for new deals (Laine, Connor, etc)
It'll be interesting to see how/if they can manage.
I think Chevy is one of best GMs around. I think Tyler Myers gets moved. They’ll be fine. They don’t have any Okposo contracts on the books
-
I think the plan is to sign a major free agent preferably Matt Duchenne. Resign Skinner and keep the draft picks. Then bribe Seattle into taking Okposo contract in the expansion draft next year.

As a fan, I don't have to give him ***** first of all. It's on him to entertain me, not the other way around. I'm the paying customer, not him.
Second of all, he is 18 yrs old, I expect the mistakes, but not so often for where he was touted.
Are you familiar with Phil Housley early years? He was so poor defensively that he was moved to forward. He’s in the HOF. Rasmus will be amazing. Do you know who was the last 18 year old defenseman to be great in his rookie year? Bobby Orr. That was 50 years ago.

Why is Nylander a bust but Mittelstadt isn't? Nylander is only 8 months older, lost some development time due to injury, but is now performing very well in Rochester. Mitts has 5 goals, 6 assists, and probably 0 pull-ups in 42 NHL games. Are people even watching these games? Mitts looks terrible. Nylander deserves a call-up, and Mitts needs to do some remedial AHL work.
Mittelstadt belongs in Rochester. I think he’s only here because we traded ROR. He clearly isn’t ready. We are very weak down the middle. I’m not sure how we are going to improve the center position in the near future. Asplund isn’t ready either. Samson can’t play center. Maybe Girgensons is the best answer for now.

I also never want to see Sobotka on the power play again.

I'd love to see the PP improve.....but I have no confidence HCPH can get them there. Disco Dan's 2016-2017 team had a 24.5% PP success rate, which was #1 in the league. HCPH's team only hit 19.1% last year....ranked around 20th or so. This year, the percentage is even worse with arguably more talent (18.8%). It's actually getting worse, not better. Just part of my skepticism that he is the right man for the job.
Yikes those stats are an indictment of HCPH.

I agree. And they don’t even need to capitalize on it. They just need to look not completely inept.
it was a weird game. Pretty scrambly and lots of home run passes from both sides.
Bout what I expected with a Jackless squad.
Still can’t figure out why Elie getting hit at center ice before the puck got there wasn’t interference,... oh, yeah, Boston.
I can’t figure out why Elie is on the team. He showed me nothing. I’d rather see Nylander or Olofson.

our record is far better now. was he a locker room issue? Can't say. What I can say is that we are a better team over all, even if we have streaks like this.
While we are definitely improved I think other factors account for this such as goaltending, Bogo, Dahlin McCabe and Skinner

I’m really wondering if trading ROR was a huge mistake. Casey Mittelstadt is not a second line center and the return on the deal seems mediocre. Did Bots overreact to ROR getting emotional with the media?

How much better would we be with ROR and Kane?

We need both Kane and Skinner not one or the other. Oh well no use dwelling in the past but Botteril’s 3 biggest moves have been questionable at best. As a GM he is in Doug Whaley territory.
