  1. Except he already returned from the injury and said his vision is fine...

I highly doubt it is fine.  Players always tend to understate the effects of injuries.  I know he returned to play, but I don't know that he has been playing at the same level.  I suspect Garth Snow is aware of his limitations and does not want to sign him to an extension.

  2. Trading for a player like Okposo would not be something that falls under the distinction of "too soon". He is 27 years old, easily young enough to grow with our young core. He also fills a position of need, RW. He is also a very talented player with some grit. Why wouldn't we want a guy like that on Eichel's wing? We need some talented veteran players to play with our youth, can't jut trot out a team of kids.

I don't want him.  He has seriously impaired vision and is essentially monocular.  This is a huge impairment for a professional athlete where hand-eye coordination  is paramount.  I doubt he will ever be the same player he was.

  3. I agree that someone is going to overpay for ROR, but the contract has to be factored in.  It's going to depress his market value.  No one is going to give up much for him without having an extension in place or at least feeling very confident about being able to sign him.  ROR is going to make it clear which teams he's interested in signing with and which he isn't.  That is going to reduce the number of bidders.

I think ultimately ROR, if he is traded this summer, will go to a team willing to give up a young top-pairing defenseman.  Colorado needs defenseman and they don't want to spend $7MM per year to get one.  For the Sabres to make that trade, it has to be Risto or maybe Bogo.

NFW are the sabres trading Risto or Bogo.   Zadorov or Pysyk are possibliities.  Bogo has a big contract so that is undesirable for the Avs.

  4. I agree that Colorado will ask for one of them.  That is a far cry from saying that Colorado will require both of them in order to trade with the Sabres.  No one in the NHL will give up that much for him.

IMHO, a good comparable for ROR is Chris Drury.  Certainly the Sabres, if they trade for ROR and give him a fat contract (and I agree that it will cost $7MM+ per year to sign him), will hope that ROR becomes another Drury.

To get Drury, the Sabres gave up Rhett Warrener, a no-BS top-4 defenseman, plus Steve Reinprecht, a journeyman forward (the Sabres got back Steve Begin, another journeyman forward, in the deal).  So it was essentially Warrener for Drury.

Risto's ceiling is higher than Warrener's was, but if GMTM is confident about Nikita and the other young defensemen in the system, I could see him biting the bullet and giving up Risto.

NB that I completely agree with Dudacek that there is NFW that GMTM gives up Risto or anything of that ilk without an extension in place for ROR.

I don't agree.  I think if ROR tells Colorado he's not re-signing with them under any circumstances, Colorado will decide to move him this summer, as that is when they will get the best return.

There is NFW that either Risto or Girgensons gets moved for ROR.   some combination of Zadorov, Foligno, Grigorenko and possibly picks and or prospects will do it.  The market for ROR will not be that big due to his high salary demands.

  5. ROR controls everything.  There are very few teams that will ante up for 7 years 49 million dollar extension in a location he prefers.  This will greatly limit the return Colorado can get.  I think he can be traded for after the draft with an agreed upon extension for a reasonable deal.

  6. And how are we feeling this morning?  Starting to appreciate the thought of the below on opening night?

    Kane-Eichel-Moulson

    Ennis-Reinhart-Zemgus

    Foligno-Ryan O'Reilly-Griggy

    Deslauriers-McC-Kaleta

    Bogo-Gorges

    Risto-Nikita

    Pysyk-Weber

    I know I am.

I don't see how we trade for ROR unless he is signed long term.  This would have to happen after the draft.  There is no way I trade our 2016 #1 for ROR.  It would most likely involve Grigorenko,or Ennis and Bogosian to Colarodo for ROR

  7. This post has been brought to you by the Roy-for-Malkin foundation.  With hope and leadership we will find a cure.

This is a pretty good point.  I'm not so concerned about the tweet itself as I am about what appears to be a tendency to regularly put off his teammates.

Having said that, I would still trade a low 1st and a prospect not named Risto, Samson or Nikita for him.

    this.

    Mr moderator nfreeman,

Apparently you  think that an injured player who only scored 10 goals and 22 points this year and was a disruptive influence in the locker room is worth far more than the proposed offer.  I beg to differ.  Winnipeg needs to make the playoffs this year and they desperately need forwards.  They also have tremendous difficulty attracting free agents.  Even though Stafford and Stewart are rentals they would be very helpful for the playoff run.  In addition this increases the likelyhood of them resigning with the Jets.  Hodgson has not had a good year, but his previous year scoring was quite comparable to Kane and he is signed long term.  Foligno brings size and toughness and is also under contract.  2 second round picks with the sabres being the first pick of the second round is nothing to sneeze at.  I am willing to bet a steak dinner at Peter Lugers that the ultimate package that Kane gets traded for is substantially less than what I proposed.  What say you?

  8. Late to the party (discussion) but until this season, the Hawks have been a train wreck in generating fan support.....The NBA has support issues....in Atlanta! While we focus on the possibilities of the expansion cities, I'm in the camp that the right (or wrong) ownership group is just as, if not more important. I'm not up to speed on the potential ownership groups flirting with the expansion teams, but I had a front row seat to the Atlanta Spirit debacle and there was no way the Thrashers ever had a chance with that clown show running things.

As a fellow Atlanta resident and Thrashers fan, I couldn't agree more. Good ownership is essential to success. Had Arthur Blank owned the thrashers, they would still be in atlanta.

  9. I think respected sports outlets reporting on legitimate conversations they had with insders about Myers being traded to Detroit is enough to warrant discussion on an internet message board.

    This isn't an (E5)

I'm glad GMTM is asking for the moon, because I don't want to trade Myers and I don't think he does either. He has enough to deal with trying to move the previous ly referenced players.

  10. Sabres aren't trading Myers. We are not getting McEichel. I know I am bursting your balloon. This thread should be restricted to discussions that have a realistic chance of happening.. The following players have a decent chance of being moved.

    Stewart

    Stafford

    Enroth or Neuwirth

    Benoit

    Mezzaros

    Hodgson

    Foligno

  11. Edmonton isn't going to trade Hall, and probably not RNH either.

If the Sabres want Eberle, the price will include Risto or Nikita (or perhaps Myers). The best defenseman the Oilers get for Eberle isn't going to be a guy who can't beat out Strachan or Benoit for an NHL spot on one of the worst teams in the league.

I think you are overrating Eberle's value. He has a large contract that is undesirable. He is a soft one way winger with poor defensive skills. I don't know that Murray really wants him. I think Pysyck, Enroth and a #1 pick (st Louis) gets it done. Pysyck is a hometown boy there and I think Edmonton would do the deal.

  12. Lack of ability to do a pull up only tells me that he's going to need a year of strength training before he's NHL ready. I really don't see where it indicates anything else.

I would say at least one year and possibly 2 years before he is NHL ready. He simply does not have an NHL body yet.
