I agree the Pegulas never learn from their mistakes, but how could anyone else in the organization learn from these mitsakes?  No one has kept their job long enough to learn from a bad decision and modify how they do things going forward.

With each new regime we start over and get a new blank slate and new learning curve.

It's just one more reason why organizational continuity is a so important and why turning over regimes every few years is a recipe for failure.

And yet which one of the failed Sabres regimes should have been allowed to remain?  None of them!

So the spotlight again shines first and foremost on ownership; it's their job to put the right people in the right places to begin with--and then leave them there.

When you continually hire coaches and GMs with no experience this is what happens.

    I spoke too soon.

Wife continued to have symptoms even after the negative test result.  They were getting worse so she was retested today.  She's tested positive.  We're in quarantine now.  I get tested tomorrow.

I'm symptom free and she's sicker than a dog.  Says she's never experienced headahes like this before.  And the dry cough she's got is awful to listen to.  I can only imagine that it feels much worse for her.  And today is her first day with a fever.

I figure it's only a matter of time for me.

Sorry to hear. It sounds awful. Feel better soon. At least there’s a game to watch tonight to make you feel more miserable.

Given the commentary on how Babcock treated players perhaps he's not the best choice.  The dude has tarnished himself heavily, that's why he's in Saskatoon.  The point here is that Krueger ain't gettin' it done and some seasoned hockey coach would be better.  This I believe.  Especially after the Vogl tweet regarding off-sides in practice.

It's clear the "little things" aren't being enforced.  it shows on the ice.

Saskatoon is his home.  He is guaranteed a huge amount of money from the Leafs so why not kick back with the family and enjoy life and still make 6 million a year.  I imagine 6 million goes pretty far in Saskatoon.  He is exactly what we need in the coaching department, a demanding experienced winner, but we also need an experienced GM that he can work with.

Would anyone her be complaining if Skinner followed up last year with a 25-30 goal season and potted at least 4 so far this year?  Nope.  Many people said when the contract was signed that there was no way he could live up to that contract and they were correct, but no one would be saying that the contract was the worst contract in the league.  Unfortunately for Skinner he has RK as his coach and RK kills skills players.

Didn’t Jack have his best year under RK and isn’t he a skill player?

The contract and the player would be fine if we actually used him properly.  RK needs to go.

There is no possible realistic situation that the contract would be fine.  He could play all pp minutes and all minutes with Jack and it would still be the worst contract in the league. It’s too long and a NMC in addition to 9 million/ year. Unless Skinner turns into Austin Matthews it’s a bad deal.

Proven NHL experience is no guarantee of success.  Babcock went to Toronto and they stacked the roster with offensive stars.  He could not win there.  Now he is coaching in Saskatoon.  I love Saskatoon, but ...

We could only be so lucky to have Babcock. He would have done fine had he be given more time. Mathews has developed into the best player in the game now. He had Marner and Mathews and Nylander when they were very young. Similar to what bylesma had with Eichel and Reinhart and Risto.

Actually I am just fine. I think the Sabres are trash and I think the vaccine rollout in the US can best be described as utter *****.

The vaccine roll out in the US is much better than in Canada.  None of my numerous relatives over the age of 65 have been vaccinated in Canada.  In addition most elective surgery is postponed with waits approaching 10-12 months.  Many health care workers have been unable to obtain the vaccine in Canada.

Was there a push from Mario to reset and a reluctance by Rutherford to do that?

Hextall is a good hockey man. Not really a fan of what Burke brings in this day and age.

Burke still believes you need some sandpaper in your lineup. You can’t be the wimpiest team in the league and expect to compete in the playoffs. He would have hated our roster.

Heard is from a former player who is still in touch with things at Harbor Center.  Basically, his inability (or reluctance) to thrive in RK’s system is alienating him.  RK is well liked and the teams wants to take a step forward.  The guys feel a sense of doom having him on their line.

Hard to believe given how well his first year was with the team.  Look now and he fell to the 4th line, you never see him on a PP, or in OT.  To me he looks like he is working most of the time, but no one feeds him the puck and when he get the puck  he just tries to create space for him to shoot -  it looks like he plays alone.

That is very worrisome if true. Hopefully Skinner will adopt a different mindset.

Culture -  I have a few connections to past Sabres and some people in the know.  40 years of winning culture has been destroyed by the last 10 years.  This was a proud franchise that, despite a few bumps in their history, used to be synonymous with a positive hockey culture.

Skinner is not well liked by the players.   The ROR and Eichel dynamic was not all that great.  They may be “friends” but they did not lead together.  ROR goes to StLouis, a team loaded with veteran leaders and he fits right in, impressing everyone with his work ethic and skills.  No doubt he was a better choice to get the C than Jack.

How do you know that Skinner is not well liked by the other players?  I have not heard that.

  11. The NHL tried to be cheap and didn't test frequently enough and use rapid testing.  They also refused to get rid of seats behind benches in arenas where fans are allowed.  They didn't cancel games when they should have.  The owners are losing their shirts this year with the CBA and they are skimping to save every penny at the risk of player safety.

I got flamed pretty hard for saying at the time that firing GMTM and HCDB set the rebuild back two years.

I guess it was right to be flamed, we're at four years and counting.

Their firing wasn’t the problem. The problem was hiring an utter and complete incompetent in Botteril. He will go down as one of the worst GMs in NHL history. How Seattle hired him is shocking.

On ice/locker room leadership - cool we brought in Staal, but it's just not that simple.  And this is tough bc we're in middle of covid protocols making interaction and team bonding near impossible.

    Goaltending

    Coaching

In order those are the biggest problems in this organization.

Maybe we can bring back Brian Gionta or Josh Georges if you want leadership. That didn’t go so well.
