I would love it if they signed Tarasenko, but he's not coming here.  The Sabres would need more than the 1 Russian they currently have on the roster to keep him out of Florida, California or NYC.

The Sabres don't need Tarasenko.  They have the goal-scorers.  A two-way forward would be nice; a goalie is more important.

I don't see how you draw that conclusion from what I said because it's not even close to true.

Reread what you wrote.  If the Sabres don't spend, it's going into Terry's private jet (which doesn't exist).  And you're praising foolish spending by Yzerman.  So, using a simple formula, 1 + 1 = 2.

UPL, Oloffson, Joker and Rosen for Hellebuyck. That’s 6.1 of money coming in and 8.1 going out. We’re now at the correct amount of nhl rostered players and have 7.9m in cap space.

I'd love it if Winnipeg would make this trade.

I don’t think they are going to spend like drunken sailors either but the point is, anyone they bring is going to be offset by players on the roster in addition to two others plus a forward probably results in VO’s salary going as well.

I do hope you're right.  (I also sometimes wonder how we can see holes in VO's game but we also think actual NHL GMs are going to pick him up at $4.75M.)

The $5.8M is really misleading. It counts at least two players that won’t be here and yes, I know they can’t bury it all in AHL. Point is, they have plenty of room.

Let's say they sign a G for $4M.  They then trade UPL (837K) out for some mid-level pick.  That's still 3.2M off of the 5.8.  I'm not saying that they *can't* make a move, but they'd better be judicious about it.  If they can get some team to take Bryson for futures, that would help a lot.  Point is, I wouldn't get my hopes up about Bertuzzi, nor would I assume that if they don't spend right up to the cap by Sept. 1, that the surplus is going into Terry's private jet, as @PerreaultForeversuggested.  They need to have some dry powder for the deadline or in case of a injury.  (A cheaper player like Power going on LTIR isn't replaceable at a similar cost.)

Incorrect but good of you to know what the entire board thinks.

As a fan, I want us to be a cap ceiling spending team not a cap floor team. Assets we can use and flip at the deadline, why not?

Orlov got 7.75 from Carolina for 2 years. I'd have bid more for 2 years (after which the money goes to Power). But maybe Terry needs a new private jet or yacht instead of a winning team who knows?

I still have SLIM hope we trade for Pesce and Helleybuck but it's  a remote possibility until it isn't. Otherwise, we haven't done enough. We add Bertuzzi tomorrow or make some other big move I will change my tune.

By your logic, it's a great move if the Sabres don't get Pesce or Hellebyuck but instead blow $5M on Gibson or $7M on Toews.  It doesn't matter if money is spent wisely, as long as it's spent, it seems.  Some of Yzerman's moves yesterday were just plain stupid unless he's just trying to get to the cap floor (which isn't the case).

There is zero reason that would have to be the case

Oh it's a big overpay but it's just money. If we have cap money not spent it only helps Terry. Detroit owner obviously don't care. ANY added asset is still an asset.

I'm not convinced Detroit will be any better, but adding assets and then flipping them for picks later? I have no issues with that if I'm a Detroit fan.

You'd be screaming if Adams had done it and the entire board knows it.

Doesn't matter, it's still an overpay for what he brings. Comparatively, Geekie as your 4C at 2 million is better. Jost is an in betweener for me and doesn't fill a bottom end role well imo. But again, it doesn't really matter to me.

We know Jost fits this team and the coach.  We know no such thing about Geekie.  And I'm not ready to trust you if you think Yzerman is some sort of GM wizard.

Clifton has 60 PIM last season, his highest total yet but he only had one fight.   Still, he tends to go off with someone.  He is tough.  He hits and he does not like  stuff happening around his goalie.

One of the best middle weight fighters in the league IMO.

I personally couldn’t care less about him fighting. I do like the “stay away from my goalie” attitude however. As long as he doesn’t take selfish blockhead penalties doing it.

Can he handle Lucic if necessary, is the question.

When you overpay for players such as Ehrhoff the franchise stench becomes more tolerable to take. Overpriced contracts are more likely to happen to troubled franchises in order to attract players. That's not going to happen under KA.

I actually deleted him because I don't think he was within the last ten.  The Sabres certainly weren't seen as an abyss when they signed him.

We’re paying a bad team tax during FA, but we are keeping our own at significant discounts. I think the bad team tax will end after this coming season.

I understand your view but respectfully disagree with. The so called "bad team tax" for the most part has recently been dispelled. At least so far, the reason that some good players haven't been added to the roster is KA's determination not to overspend on players, even players he would like to bring on. KA and the organization is very data driven. He's looking for value. He's very disciplined when considering talent relative to cost. KA has openly stated that he is ready to deal to fill needs. He's choosy and tight fisted on this issue. I'm confident that shortly there will be additional deals to upgrade the blueline.

I think there's no such thing as a bad team tax when it comes to free agents.  This team, as bad as it has been, has managed to sign "hot" free agents numerous times in the last ten years.  There was no bigger name than Okposo on the FA market in 2016, for example, and Hall in 2020 was surpassed only by Pietrangelo.  Gionta too--remember, he dared to snub Toronto to come here.
