  1. I don't even want to get started about the boys getting eliminated today. I am just so disgusted with not just the lack of effort throughout the course of the season, but the incompetence of the FO.

I implore every fan that still lives in Bflo to boycott every home game next season. Maybe that will serve as a wake up call to them that we will no longer put up with the half-a$$ effort put forth by the entire organization.

How much you gonna give me for not using my tix?

  2. 5.) Half the family pregnant, other half dying. An oldie but a goodie.

Why do senior citizens insist on making ~30 year old M*A*S*H references on a board where, even with including said senior citizens, the average age of the board's members is younger than that episode?

  3. Several.

Why do I always read this thread title as Compliant Thursday?

Why does Inky think I don't realize that Mark's wings are BBQ based? (Unless you order them as Bflo, in which case you get a mild version of good wings, which isn't particularily good.) The hot wings are actually reasonable for the east side of town, but when you order 'hot' and they show up as plain BBQ, as Dennis would say "bad things, man."

Why does my gravel driveway have a 1/2" layer of ice under it which causes me to go through shear bolts like they're candy on Halloween?

Speaking of Halloween, why have I not had one single trick-or-treater show up at my house in the 15 years that I've lived in Ra-cha-cha? (I actually know the answer to that one, I've got the scariest driveway in all of Ra-cha-cha, and only have 2 kids under the age of 15 that don't share my last name living on my road.)

Why is the only time I seem to get to post on this board on Thursday nights?

Why does Spndnchz continue to torment all the old geezers on this board?

What the #@$@% is spending cheeese supposed to mean anywho?

Where the frig is PA to make this rant seem less old timer than it actually is?

How the heck did I forget Theo Fleury?

Why is this thread still open 1-1/2 hours into Friday?

Why isn't Ales Kotalik a consistant 30 goal scorer? (OK, I know the answer to that one as well. Sorry.)

  4. How about the folks who don't use the sidewalk, even when it's plowed. If you are walking down the middle of the street, you are fair game to me.

Gee, there's a shock. A pizza delivery guy gunning for pedestrians. ;)

Actually, I need you to switch to the Macedon Mark's. The last time I ordered, the food was slow and the "hot" wings were barbeque. WTF!

  5. Those stupid Nationwide TV commercials where some jackass stands there and watches their friend or coworker's car get destroyed in the most improbable of circumstances and don't even tell them that their new car is being wrecked.

Not to mention the whole idea behind the commercial - that the insured's car insurance would have to pay for the damage to their vehicle caused by a stranger dropping a TV on the car roof from three stories up...

The one I don't like is the one at the bank where the kid keeps launching objects at / into the guy's car. Sans container to create seal in system, no vacuum. Sans vacuum, nothing is going anywhere. And how the frig did the kid get the terminal of the pneumatic system to be directed at the car, when 5 seconds earlier the "pig catcher" was aligned vertically?

Sorry, but some stoned marketing dude saying "wouldn't it be cool if ..." where ... is some form of "the laws of physics/thermodynamics do not apply" when it isn't some sort of fantasy situation (wherein the laws of physics/thermodynamics are on occassion intentionally voided) is ANNOYING. (No offense to any stoned marketers that may be reading this. B-) )

And getting back to the original rant, why the heck doesn't the idiot in the car move it after the 1st thing hits the car? Or at most, why doesn't he move it after the 2nd thing hits it? His car gets hit with about 5 different things (counting the mortar barrage of coins as one thing).

  6. Team sizes are capped, as far as I know. However, playing devil's advocate, shouldn't the best in the world compete regardless of whether they come from 10 different countries or whether 9 come from one country and 1 from a second country?

Onto your main point concertning amateurs: it won't revert to that regardless of what it was "intended to be." To be honest, that concept of "amateurs only" itself is out of date, too. The main reason for the change to allow professionals is, actually, beacause what it was "intended to be" was extremely inaccurate as time moved forward. When the modern Olympics were started in 1896, the thinking was that professionals were cheaters. People were supposed to participate to be part of the (Olympic) event, not to win. Professional athletes of the time were considered "win at all costs" and "practice makes perfect;" both of which were frowned upon by the founders of the IOC. How excited would you be to watch players that played pond hockey only compete? That is what the Olympics were originally "intended to be" by their founders. Not quite "the best in the world," which is what the modern Olympics are now.

Another crucial point in the argument to allow pros was, as you mentioned, "full-time, state-sponsored" amateurs. It is not so much a question is how can true amatuers hockey players compete with the Red Army team, but how can self-financed amateur hockey players afford to compete with state-sponsored amateurs.

Lastly, the IOC has kind of protected themselvs in this debate by allowing the governing bodies of the sports themselves decide, ie: IIHF, FIFA, etc. The only two (summer, anyway) sports that still do not allow pros are baseball and boxing. However, many governing bodies also place restrictions while still allowing pros. For example, FIFA allows pros, but only 3 per team may be 23 years old or older.

The issue I have w/ that statement is by the time the Western countries really started sending pros to the games ('92), is when the Iron Curtain had fallen. They actually COULD have made the Olympics for amateurs. (Athough it's my understanding that track athletes and skiers had pretty big endorsement contracts in Europe, so there definitely were issues to be worked out.) Not saying it could have been easy to get everything "amateur", just find it ironic that once the Soviets stopped sending pros, we started.

  7. Game thoughts...

-Solid 60 minute effort. Dominating in both zones. Very few good opportunities for Boston.

-Crowd was into the game. Good to see the fans "alive" after a 3 game losing streak.

    -Briere is money...$$$$

-Paetsch as a 4th liner and extra dman(if needed) is a 100% better option than Peters in the lineup. Hopefully we will only see Peters for anothe 5 or 10 games from here on out.

-Note to Kotalik...When you come down the wing with the puck can you change it up every now and then? I don't mind if he can get a hard shot off, but time after time, it's a lame ass wrist shot. How about carrying the puck into the corner and behind the net and attempting to make a pass from there? How about trying to drive to the net? He is a very frustrating player to watch.

-Glad Tallinder is back. I didn't expect to see him back this fast. He does make a big difference.

    GO SABRES!!!!

Even if Paetsch doesn't play wing, 10 games is a lot of the remaining season to see Andy (1 in 3), so I'd expect to only see him in about 5 games (ideally fewer).

I don't know. It was called charging, but after watching the replay a couple times, the hit itself is clean - I don't see any charging or elbowing or anything. The only problem is that does come about a full second after the whistle. My quick search of the NHL rulebook didn't turn up any specific penalty for hitting after the whistle, but the online version is pretty watered-down.

It looked like it was called by the ref that was behind the goal line, so it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't TOTALLY see the play. With that, the hit coming after the whistle, the Bruin dropping like he'd been shot, and the refs calling a tight game it adds up to a charging penalty.

There is no specific call for hitting someone after the play is dead. If it's clearly outside of a follow through of the ongoing play it could be called unsportsmanlike conduct or roughing (or any of the other myriad of penalties that it may have been had the play occurred before the whistle blew).

  8. Thomas is in place for Toivonen. How "hopeless" can they get? :D

I get a feeling the guys are going to go on cruise control for the rest of the game.

Was Peters a healthy scratch for tonight? I just heard that Mair and Primeau went at each other.

Yep. Paetsch took a regular shift on the 4th line and at the point on the 1st pp unit.

  9. Just so no one gets the wrong idea, I don't hate Marty or wish him gone. But facts are facts. He wants to be a starter somewhere, yet hasn't proven himself capable. It's even arguable that he hasn't proven himself as a capable backup in the "new" NHL. He makes $2M per year, which isn't that much for starter, but is quite a lot for a backup. I also don't want to romanticize his salary as Marty simply being lucky that his contract ran out at the right time - he did hold out for more money at the start of the 99-2000 season, missing the team's first 18 games. I guess I see him sort of like I see Kalinin - we have been waiting forever for him to consistently play to his potential, yet he teases us with 32 great stops, and lets in one or two bad goals to cost his team the game.

You almost get the feeling like he is a mid-range NFL quarterback who still thinks he can start, but doesn't realize that his career path is heading down the backup route.

Dave, what 10 starting goalies would so he is better than? I don't see more than four or five, myself, but I don't see many more than that. I think he might be surprised when free agency starts, because I don't think he is going to be as sought after as he hopes.

As for Timmy, I want him back and completely healthy as much as the next Sabres fan. I just don't want to get my hopes up that he'll be back far enough before the playoffs to make a difference, and that he'll be the magic bullet that will cure all this team's ills, which I suspect some fans are thinking. Timmy isn't going to change this team's work ethic, nor does he add any toughness, and those have been the two biggest knocks on the team this year.

Hopeless posted something along the lines of your question a few weeks back in the Game Discussion Thread of 1/5. (Actually, in that thread, I had him starting on 5 teams (Colorado, Florida, Filly, St. Louis, and Tampa) and possibly starting on another 5 (Boston, Columbus, Ottawa, Phoenix, and Toronto).)

In my post you are referring to, I didn't say that he necessarily would start on 10 other teams. I said there were somewhere between 20-39 guys in the league that are better than him which includes guys from teams that have 2 studs (Anaheim and SJ come to mind immediately). Considering you think he'd be able to start on 4-5 teams, I think we're pretty close to being on the same page for his abilities.

  10. And as I (and others) noted, the definition of capable is being stretched here. For $2M, his GAA and SV % should be a lot better than what Marty has put up. Are you really as comfortable with Marty between the pipes as you are Ryan?

Great. When? Maybe 6-8 weeks, barring setbacks?

You can't put the over/under number at zero. ;) (BTW, I think we'll all be yelling at the TV for at least one bad goal tonight. I hope I am wrong, but...)

So what is your take on him? That he doesn't give up as many "soft" goals as everyone thinks, or that we expect too much of a guy most people consider a no.1 somewhere else?

If Timmy makes it through the next week with no setbacks I'd be real surprised if we don't see him in March. It sounds as if he is finally getting put through NHL hockey level training. If he can go a week without that setting him back, I'd be surprised if anything short of a good shot to the melon sets him back. I won't get optimistic until this time next week.

Marty Biron is what he is. He's somewhere between the 20th and 40th best goalie in the league IMO. He can show signs of brilliance, but unless he is getting a pretty long stretch of games under his belt, will have the 1-2 mental letdowns per game that keep him from taking his play to the next level.

He got a lot of wins when he did get into the games early in the season, but he also was getting the most goal support of any goalie in the league.

He's a decent backup who's tended to have his contract expire at opportune times which is a big part of the reason he makes over $2MM/year. Lindy is comfortable with him going between the pipes every so often and he has a personality that prevents him from ever becoming a distraction to the team. Those 2 items are what will keep the Sabres from trading him (barring some truly catastrophic event(s)) even though there are other goalies that would come cheaper when filling Marty's limited playing role.

  11. Which 20 teams would Marty start for?

Anaheim? Nope, they have 2 goalies that are better.

    Atlanta? No.

Boston? Maybe, but I would give Thomas a slight edge.

    Calgary, Not a chance.

    Carolina? No.

    Chicago? No.

    Colorado? Maybe, but unlikely.

    Columbus? Maybe, but probably not.

    Dallas? No.

    Detroit? No.

    Edmonton? No.

Florida? He could probably start here.

L.A.? Maybe, but Garon would probably beat him out.

    Minnesota? No.

Montreal? No, they have 2 goalies that are better.

Nashville? No, they have 2 goalies that are better.

New Jersey? Nope, Brodeur is better.

Islanders? Nope, I'd take DiPietro over Marty.

Rangers? Nope, I'd definately start Lundqvist over Marty.

    Ottawa? No.

Philadelphia? He has a good chance, although I'd give Niittymaki a slight edge.

    Phoenix? Close, but yes.

Pittsburgh? No, Fluery has a lot of potential and he needs to play to develop.

St. Louis? No, I would take Legace over Marty.

San Jose? No, they have 2 goalies that are better.

    Tampa? Yes.

Washington? No, I'd take Kolzig over Marty.

    Toronto? Maybe.

    Vancouver? No.

EDIT: The team is 29-8-3, nothing needs to be shaken up. They had a bad game and that's it. Don't create problems that don't exist yet.

I'd put him in the yes category in Colorado, Florida, Filly, St. Louis, and Tampa. And put him in the maybe category in Boston, Columbus, Ottawa, Phoenix, and Toronto. Giving him all of those, that's 10.

  12. Did you actually see his ankle twist under ALL his weight? Mogilny fell like that and broke his leg. I don't think it's going to be a good outcome.

Maybe Heatley didn't do it on purpose. I still want someone to break his face.

I don't think he did it intentionally, but as you stated earlier, the result was he definitely slew-footed Hank. Hopefully it's not as bad as it looked.

It really wouldn't have hurt my feelings any to see Mair or Goose check him into next Thursday.

  13. -Pominville had 3 great point blank chances. I can't believe none of them went in.

-The referees seem to be letting things go again.

    -Miller...OUTSTANDING

-Very strange career turn for Satan. he is one guy that I thought would explode in the "new" NHL, but instead his stats have taken a downward turn. If it wasn't for the fact that he was booed loudly every time he touched the puck, I don't think anyone would have noticed him.

-The Islanders just couldn't get a shot through. I lost count of how many good chances did not get though to the net.

-Way to close out a 4 game homestand. The Sabres played very well throughout it(for the most part) and came away will all 8 points.

Marouelli was one of the 2 refs. He has always been lousy. Versus caught him telling DiPietro to stop trying to chop down Gaustad because he MIGHT be forced to call it. While I do believe a few things that would have been called last year are getting let go overall, I think the bigger problem is certain refs (Marouelli, Koharski, Frasier, etc.) stink and believe they are bigger than the game itself. That's why none of those guys worked the finals last year.

  14. Islanders have been playing well as of late, look for Satan to have a solid game and Nolan will get his guys up and ready for this game. That said, Sabres won't disappoint on a Holiday and for a crazy crowd at HSBC Arena....

4-2 Sabres. Vanek, Briere, Kotalik and Spacek with goals.

Satan does score one though for the Isles.

Only if the Sabres are already up by 6 or there are less than 30 seconds left. Meaningful goals and Ziro don't go hand-in-hand too often.

  15. ... but--(1) Tallinder wasn't eligible for arbitration, and (2) even if he had been, once a player files for arb, negotiations are off.

I may very well be wrong on the second point.

Tallinder was one of the 9 that filed for arbitration that signed prior to their hearing. His hearing was set for July 26 and he signed a 4 year deal on the 21st.

Teams can negotiate with an RFA until the arbitrator issues a ruling. At that time the team has to either accept the award or walk away from it. If the team walks away, the player becomes an UFA but the team is allowed to negotiate with the player (as are the other 29 teams).

  16. This is driving me crazy. In the third the goal lamp came on. The goal was waived off and play wasn't stopped which led to a break to the opposite zone and resulted in a goal (all the backcheckers were out of position).

    A) shouldn't the goal lamp stop play?

    B) Does the Montreal goal count if the Buffalo goal counts. I think not because there has to be a center ice faceoff after the first goal.

Either way, what the hell was that?

A- Ideally, yes, in reality, no. The goal light comes on randomly far too often. The only thing that officially stops play TtBoMK is a whistle.

B- BM has the scenario spelled out correctly.

C- No friggin' idea, as I was already getting thumped in my "Thursday" night game.

  17. On the Miller penalty.

He was outside the trapezoid by a foot or two. He brought the puck into the trapezoid on his backhand and move toward the back of the net. He then changed to his forehand and shot it out the other side.

He was pretty adamant that he didn't do anything worng. Ruff looked calm. Never has fully understood the ruling myself.

IF he made contact with the puck while it was both behind the goal line AND outside the trapezoid, then it was the correct call. It looked to me like he did not make contact with it when it was both behind the goal line and outside the trapezoid. So, IMHO, it was the wrong call. But it was darn close either way.

The mere fact he was "playing" it outside the trapezoid doesn't matter at all. It only matters if he makes contact with it outside the trapezoid. Also, IF a goalie has a skate in the crease, he can contact the puck behind the goal line and outside the trapezoid.

  18. Yes, he was in the camera on all the goals. I was referring to someone else.

I think we're all getting a little worked up here. Montreal and NJ are both beatable teams.

Yeah, I know. But I just couldn't resist. Zeppo was probably on the ice for all 3 as well. I know he was on the ice for the 2nd, that was the only one I actually got a chance to watch. (That and the Sabres goal, so for the little bit that I saw they were tied.)
