  1. You really think it was better than Vanek's no look backhand?

Yep. Much harder pass to make as there were 3 Bolts that could have blocked the pass, he had to lift the pass to get it through, and he was getting pressured.

Heck, I can make a backhand pass (and maybe someday I'll get lucky and make one close to being as nice as Vanek's). But to make a BACKHANDED saucer pass w/ that much pressure, no friggin' way.

  2. If I remember correctly ryan has to clear. The Sabres are running outta money a move must be made and soon. Peters might be cut, and then a player traded away for picks. Its a shame we don't have cap room with all these players hurt.

Only if he stays up for more than 10 games. He already cleared once.

As for the Sabres running out of money. They aren't. They simply aren't going to be able to make any deadline trades that bring in more salary $'s than they clear. The team IS allowed to exceed the cap by a bit this year because Timmy has been BLTI-IR'd and Henrik's been out long enough that he could be placed there as well with no adverse effects to his playing status.

IF Timmy doesn't come back at all, the team could even make a deadline deal that brings in a bit more salary. If he does come back, they basically have the roster they will end the year with as you are correct that there is no salary cap room to make additional moves.

  3. Labatt, thanks for jogging my memory on that save by Weekes. I kept wondering why nhl.com didn't have Stafford with a shot until overtime. Come to think of it, when the puck goes off a defenseman's stick, does the goalie get credit for a save?

Doc, good call. I'm not a big fight guy, so I don't know the etiquette, but what was with Peters turning his head away? Do you think that fight resulted in a benching?

hopeles, were you one of the chanting Sabre fans?

If the impetus is from the attacking team, then yes, it would count as a shot on net. If the defensive team passes it back to the goalie, it would only count as a shot if it beats him.

E.g., say the left D sends the puck to the center in front of his own net and it bounces funny off the center's stick onto the goalie, that would not be a shot unless it beat the goalie. The last member of the attacking team to touch the puck would be credited with the goal and shot if it went in.

I did jump in on the lets go buffalo chant. But I was not there was a big group of Sabres fans on the other side of the arena that were collectively much louder than me :)

There was a play late in the third where Jagr fell, and skated to the bench holding his shoulder.

On TV they showed him on the bench after that and the shoulder was definitely bothering him.

  4. Game thoughts...

    -...

-Last but not least, I know everyone has a right to do whatever they want, but a BIG FU to any Sabre fan who sold their tickets to Toronto fans just to make a tidy profit.

    GO SABRES!!!

I don't disagree with the sentiment regarding selling tickets to Loaf fans. But most of the locations where Loaf fans were sitting - down near the glass between the blue lines and then in higher corners in the 100's and 300's indicate that most of the Loaf fans either had tickets given to them by employers / clients / suppliers or were purchased from a ticket broker / tour company (the "corporate" seats) or bought them as soon as they went on sale to the general public (the "cheap" seats).

TO fans appeared to account for about 20% of the crowd which was down significantly from previous RS games.

Some idiot Loaf fan (I know, redundant in most cases) on the way out after the game shouted something in my ear about how bad the Sabres were. I shouted back at him (I'm assuming he's partially deaf, thus the reason he shouted in my ear ;) ) that at least the Sabres will make the playoffs. His response was, a much quieter, "yeah, I hope we make the playoffs".

It really stunk being at that game, but IIRC, the Habs did the same thing to the Sabres in their 1st meeting and we left the building listening to the serenade of "away, away, away, away" and then the Sabres screwed the pooch in the rematch the next night, and then proceeded to go 5-0-1 against them the rest of the way. I still expect the Sabres to get at least 5 W's against the Laffs.

  5. Few more thoughts:

    1. Did anyone get a close look at the high sticking? I didn't see Gaustad's stick hit his face. It looked to me like Chara got cut when Gaustad's helmet hit him.

    2. I was glad to see Mara finally get called for a penalty. He has grabbing on to everyone tonight.

    3. Was it really necessary for them to say it was ironic that the Bruins got called for a dive since the Sabres are known to be divers. I have 2 problems with that:

    a. Most of the Sabres reputation comes from the Bruins.

    b. Even if the Sabres are divers, that doesn't mean that the Bruins can't be called for diving.

Probably, because when they are doing Bruins games they are a couple of %!%#!@bags.

What's truly funny about that is, Jim and Rick were both saying they didn't think he dove. Can you even IMAGINE Brick and whoever else is paid by (Buffalo resident) Jeremy Jabobs to EVER say that a Sabre called for a dive against their beloved Bruins didn't really dive?

I know a lot of non-Sabres fans can't stand Rick & Jim because they are OBVIOUSLY Sabres fans. But at least they call them as they see them. If the Sabres catch a break, they point it out. And if the players are not having a good night, they call them out on that too. They pointed out tonight that the Sabres could not hold onto their sticks and several of the drops were not due to Boston taking liberties. Would you EVER hear the reverse on NESN? We all know the answer to both questions, so don't even bother.

  6. Won't we get the MSG feed for the home games? I can't stand the Boston feed. (Only time I purposely miss the anthem singing!)

There seems to be a pecking order of which feeds end up on CI. Someone posted last year that it goes by how much each network charges for their feed, and if the parent cable company wants their broadcasts part of a national package (at least for DirecTV). Thus the reason Phlyers feeds are almost never on CI. It definitely isn't strictly using the home / away team's feed. Being in Ra-cha-cha, I don't know which feeds out-of-towners get for which games, but I recall a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth regarding the the Sabres - Bruins games last year.

So, unfortunately, my guess is you'll get the Brick and Jack far more often than anyone should be forced to listen to them.

  7. Et tu, Dave? Has DeLuca gotten to you? I went back to the Tivo on this one -- it was Roy that inexplicably iced the puck, not Peters (although Peters was on the ice at the time).

I'll have to go back and check on whether Kovalchuk was offsides on the 4th goal. I watched it again a couple of times, but didn't focus on this issue. What I did conclude was that (i) Teppo coughed it up on the outlet pass, (ii) Atlanta kept it in a good long time thereafter leading up to the goal and (iii) although Kovalchuk is a sniper, it was a stoppable shot that Miller in fact got his glove on but didn't snag.

Now, I'm as big a fan of Miller's as anyone here, but I thought this was a disappointing showing by him. I fully expect him to come back PO'd and sharp on thurs.

Well, I will have to take your word for it, but when I saw it live I was certain it was Peters who sent it down ice. The people sitting next to me thought the same thing.

I got a chance to see it on TV the next day in a restaurant, and still thought it was 76. (But in fairness I was at a bad angle to see the TV.)

Regardless, it was a horrible play and the Thrashers capitalized on it. If it was Roy who did it, it's even worse because he would have just come off the bench and was fresh.

  8. Agreed man, they had bounces at every part of the rink........... :censored:

I don't know that I'd say most of Atlanta's goals were due to bounces. They were due to bad plays by the Sabres.

The 1st goal was a big rebound by Miller, but Briere never even thought about covering Holik.

The 2nd goal was Max leaving a drop pass with what seemed to be 4 Sabres in front of him. The only person close to it was Holik. Mellanby then beat Ryan on a shot I thought should have been stopped.

The 3rd goal was initially set up because Peters towards the end of a shift decided to ice the puck rather than skate 2 more strides and dump it after he got past the red line. The Sabres forced a low percentage shot that Miller covered on that ensuing faceoff, but the Thrashers got the good bounce on the next faceoff. Even with the bounce, Drury has to be more aware of who and what is around him.

The 4th goal, when I saw it live, I thought "how in the world did Kovalchuk get back onsides". I was looking at it as an absolutely amazing play by him, because there was no way a linesman would blow that call. Right? Wrong. He was clearly offsides, but at that point in the game, the Sabres needed to fight through that one. They didn't.

The Sabres made several other poor / boneheaded plays that Miller did bail them out of. The breakaway late in the 1st being the most obvious example.

Unfortunately, while the Sabres gave Atlanta probably 8 solid scoring chances, Atlanta buried 1/2 of them. The Sabres had far more chances, but couldn't get the puck to bounce their way once they were near the net.

I'd say the Sabres controlled the play ~2/3 of the time, but the mistakes they made caused Atlanta to be the better team. It was a fun game to be at, even though it ended bad. It was pretty cool when the team acknowledged the fans cheers at the end of the game. It was also cool that, although the Sabres were playing a very good team and making a lot of mistakes that would bury a lesser team, they managed to get a point out of the game.

    97-0-1 anyone? ;)

  9. 7:30pm

its Ted Nolan vs. Lindy Ruff... its Zhitnik and Miro out to maybe prove a point against Lindy and Darcy... eh? who cares.... i'm more concerned if the sabres play like its a letdown game (which it is) or if they whoop a lesser team (which they are capable of doing). These types of games are what defines a team from being on a hot streak to being legit contenders. We all know that the sabres have been known to play down to their competition in the past. I Think they may have excersized those demons last year, but it would be nice to keep it going... I'm making a bold prediction of 3-0 tonight with miller getting his first shutout. I hated the defensive play against les guanentees in the third, but i loved the attitude that tallinder and lydman gave after the game regarding their play. time for them to make amends and get ryan his shutout, one game later.

And as for that nolan vs. ruff thing, that's so not even an issue.

Just like they did opening night last year and every other time they played the Sabres last year.

  10. Actually, I thought Max was the only one of those three that had a decent game - it seemed like neither Roy nor Vanek could keep up with him tonight. I wonder if it was just an off-game for Derek & Thomas, or if the legs were a little sluggish. Whatever. I think Lindy sent a little warning to Vanek late in the game when he was skating with Mair & Gaustad, and I think they'll get it back on track for Thursday.

He only took 1 shift with them and that was shortly after Pominville's penalty.

If anything, Lindy was sending the other kind of message - you didn't come up in the rotation on the penalty kill and your line was screwed up right after the penalty kill but we want you on the ice. So take a shift with these guys and then you'll be back on your regular shift when your line is up.

I don't see where double shifting a guy sends a message that he needs to pick up his game. I guess we took different messages from Lindy's decision.

  11. This one and Atlanta will both be tough tests.

Those are the only 2 tough ones on paper, though, until the middle of November when they have a fairly tough week (at the Canes, home to the Otters and Crysby, and then in Otterland the next night).

It will be interesting how the Sabres handle this week and then that next 2 week stretch. We might have to see how they bounce back from a loss (hopefully not, it would be kind of cool to see them get the NHL record) and see if they can continue to put their foot on the throats of weaker opponents. Hopefully, their tendency to give up the 1st goal doesn't catch up to them (they've done it in 1/2 their games). It hasn't yet.

It's pretty obvious that they aren't going to sneak up on anyone this year.

Enjoy the ride boys (and Monkeygirl).

  12. I'm not certain exactly what you are looking for "seat #ing" wise, but seat #'s in HSBC start with 1 at the right side of the section (facing the ice) and go up from there.

106 would be a little tricky because it has part of the visitor's bench in front of it and the visitor's tunnel. The 1st row behind the player's bench would probably be row 3. I'm not sure what they do with #'s by the tunnel.

  13. I know I mentioned this in the Strangers game day thread, but does anyone else notice a trend here. The Sabres are saddled with an abominable snot smear on their chests and they win 1 goal games. :o

They get the opportunity to wear something GOOD and they crush the opposition. B-)

Time to retire the abominable snot smear. ;)

PS - Yes, you are welcome for my turning this into another "logo" thread. :P

  14. Two things. When is Connolly supposed to be back, and if a team enters the shoot-out with time remaining on a penalty in OT, does it change anything?

BTW in the Rangers-Flyers game, it took the 26th shot before the Rangers won in the shoot-out.

Only if the player is serving a 10 minute or a game misconduct penalty. In that case he can't be in the shootout. Otherwise, it has no effect.

  15. This game could be a major letdown game for the sabres, 3rd game in 4 nights... it could get ugly. Coming into ottawa, a team that really hates us, after that emotional game last night... Wow... About the only thing that's on the sabres side tonight: if there's a definition for one team being in the head of another team, well that's the sabres situation with ottawa... We could win, and i really think we can, but it will be really difficult. Hope Emery plays!!! I love that guy.

I don't know. You may be right, but I just have a hard time picturing an Alfredsson led team being worked up about anything, much less getting to the point of "hating".

  16. You know, I always considered this town to be sports diehards. But between the Bills game this past weekend (we're up by 5 with 3minutes left, and people are filing out) and last nights game, I really have to reconsider. I mean you IT AIN'T OVER UNTIL IT'S OVER. You pay all that money for ticks and you leave before the game is over? Bunch of freaking panzies.

I was at the game last night and was surprised to hear Riter going on and on about people leaving early. Yes, the 200 level was about half filled during the 2nd half of the 3rd (that happens EVERY game), but the 100's and 300's were at least 90% filled to the end (I'd estimate it at 95%, but it might have only been 90%).

There were empty spots in the 100's and 300's, but they were few and far between.

  17. After a quick phone call, I found out that Time Warner is having some troubles with Versus. Their timing is horrific.

Anyway, getting back to the action, for the second straight year, the Sabres have scored the first goal of the NHL regular season. How neat is that?

    That's nice, but ...

scoring the LAST goal of the season will be MUCH cooler. B-)

    My thoughts.

    - Peters, get him out, he's huge, but useless.

    - Hecht, I think he might be better served on Drury's Line, and moving Kotalik up with Briere and Maxim.

Perhaps, but having Ales be the "defensive minded" player on a line scares me a little.

    - Spacek look fantastic.

    - Our Defense looks really good in general. Their covering their errors and the rebounds in front of the net were taken care of.

    - Pominville, ready to step up.

    - Roy. Nice Hustle.

    - Vanek, needs to get it going.

    - Altogether we looked a little sloppy, but I can feel the same old Sabres coming through again. And that's a really good thing.

Yeah, my last crusade seems to have potential to have a happy ending. I'm hoping the newest one works out so well. ;)

  18. My very quick take on the game.

Miller is the real deal. I see no "sophomore slump" for this kid.

Spacek played the way I expected him to. Solid at both ends, threw a few nice hits, didn't do anything spectacular, but did what he needed to do. Can you imagine how the powerplay will work when he's moving the puck on the BL and Timmy's moving it up front? I can't wait.

Overall the team played solid. A few more penalties than I would like to have seen, but not terribly unexpected in the 1st game of the season with 2 very fast teams.

I really hope the league pays attention to Justin Williams' high sticks to the eye. He put Koivu out last year and came very close to putting Gaustad out this year. I don't care how good he is. The next time he cuts a guy above the mouth, he should get a 2 game suspension. What would the league do if he gets Ovechkin or Jagr next time?

Gleason is a good pick up for the Canes. He'll never be what Johnson is supposed to become, but he broke up several Sabres scoring chances. The kid is good and will be very strong in his own end for a long time.

Vanek needs to bury a chance against Montreal to keep from gripping that stick too tight (if he isn't already). Hopefully he'll keep working hard, and I think he'll be ok when one finally goes in, but he should have buried at least 1 of his 3 killer chances. It looked like the puck got away from him slightly on all 3 at some point.

I definitely am holding off on getting an HDTV for at least another year or 2. I liked the way the unis looked (kind of surprised myself) but unless they had a closeup on a Sabre I couldn't really see that thing on the front (which was a good thing ;) ). So no HDTV for this kid.

Paille can't be brought up quick enough or Timmy can't come back soon enough. Being able to roll 4 lines will be huge.

  19. "Hamel, a 29-year-old left wing battling for a roster spot with the Senators after leading the AHL in goals last season with 56, scored three straight times in a 3:22 span of the second period. He began the run with an even-strength goal, added a power-play score and finished the hat trick with a short-handed goal."

    Wow.

Good for Hamel, it sounds like he has FINALLY recovered from the leg injury he suffered against the Isles. I honestly believed that after so much time being a shell of his former self that he'd never come back.

Bad for the Sabres, but I hold no ill will towards him.

  20. Heya Folks, its been a long summer, but finally winding down and getting back into hockey! I'll be heading to Scotiabank Place for the game tonight and will do my best to give an unbiased report afterwords on how the game went.

Why you going to Scotiabank Place? Shouldn't you be heading to the United Center? :P

Now that your screen namesake is no longer there, who's your new boy?

One last one. How do you think the changes to the roster will work out?

    Welcome back.

  21. Gametime: 7:00 PM EDT

Not sure about any other coverage besides radio...

Corp was saying yesterday how cool it was to have hockey back so soon. Last night, the Leafs continued their scoreless steak against the Sabres to over five months. Throw in that April 16th game was their last meaningful game. Now that is cool...

It doesn't look like it's being shown in any markets. FSN Ohio has a World Series of Poker repeat scheduled. (WTF!?!) FSN Cincinnati is showing a Reds game. (At least that one makes sense.) And the WNY MSG alternate channel is showing a "Sabres 6 Pack" game. (IIRC, it's supposed to be the Pomminstein winner game.)

But, the FSN Pittsburgh is showing the Pens-Sens game from Halifax, so for those of us w/ DirecTV Sports Package or in the Pittsburgh market, we MAY get lucky and get the Pens game on the 29th broadcast there.

  22. July 8, 1995

In a major rebuilding move by John Muckler, who has been ordered to slash payroll, the Sabres trade former 76-goal scorer Alexander Mogilny and a fifth round draft choice in 1995 to Vancouver for Mike Peca, Mike Wilson and a first round pick in 1995 that turns into Jay McKee. Not a bad deal!

Holy cow, this team is going to stink forever.

They traded away a 76 goal scorer for a used puck bag and a couple of broken sticks.

That Peca is WAY too tiny to ever be an NHLer.

Sabres draft picks NEVER pan out. This McKee guy's probably going to be another David Cooper.

But you know, that Wilson kid's got pretty good size. If Doug McKenney can get him to bulk up some, he could be the key to this deal not being horrible.

Oh, who are we kidding, we're DOOOOOOMED, DOOOOOOOMED!!!.

    :P

  23. PA -

    Please add for next year.

    June 30, 2006

Crappy new logo design showcased on the front page of the Buffalo News. A letter writting campaign to team president Larry Quinn begins. Quinn announces the team is moving to Rochester where the fans like the new design and are nicer. The Rochester Raging Hampsters are born.

You sure it isn't the Rochester Raging Not-A-Hampsters are born? :P

( Apologies to those of you that don't post on TSW. B-) )

  24. I wish I knew who was unprotected for that draft. Obviously they made the deal to protect someone else. If I remember correctly, Columbus picked those two very early, stopping Minnesota from taking any of our players.

    Your wish is my demand.

Sabres exposed to the waiver draft:

    Doug Gilmour

    Denis Hamel

    James Patrick

    Domenic Pittis

    Rob Ray

    Dwayne Roloson

    Geoff Sanderson

    Richard Smehlik

    Chris Taylor

    Vlad Tsyplakov

    Dixon Ward

    Jason Woolley

As mentioned, Buffalo gave up Davidson, Grand-Pierre and the pair of 5ths, to get Columbus to take Roloson (who the BJ's did not want) and Sanderson (who they did want, but probably not enough to use their 1st forward pick on him). Grabbing these 2 kept Buffalo from losing a defenseman they wanted to keep (as a team that lost a goalie couldn't lose a D-man) and kept them from losing Gilmour or Ward as well.
