Sabres’ power play flexes its muscle

‘The Sabres improved to 7-1-1 in their last nine games. They will try to extend their run Thursday night when they visit Boston to face the Bruins.’

NHL never far from Hodgson

‘The Sabres’ need for size and toughness hasn’t gone away. If anything, it became greater when Hodgson arrived for the bigger, nastier Kassian. Hodgson’s dimensions are deceiving, however. His 6-foot frame looks like it adds up to more than 185 pounds when he’s not wearing equipment. He has the big, strong hands of a bricklayer and thick, muscular legs.’

Sabres’ first line rewards Ruff’s patience

‘Derek Roy stayed between Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville — even though that trio had no points and was a combined minus-12 over the previous three games. Vanek and Pominville both had two points and collected power-play goals, with Pominville blasting home the OT winner.’

Sabres shake off slow start against Hurricanes, move two points behind Jets

‘“The first period, it wasn’t a great period on our part,” Ruff said following the Sabres’ 3-2 overtime triumph inside the First Niagara Center. “Some of it was execution. Some of it was effort. Some of it was we were walking half asleep on the ice and no one busted back to even try to break it up. I was trying to light a little fire.”

Sabres newcomer Hodgson lands in Buffalo briefly

‘Hodgson’s played 13 of his last 17 games on the road. Even meeting up with the Sabres was difficult last week.’

Pominville gives Sabres’ 3-2 OT win over ‘Canes

‘The Sabres converted with Bryan Allen off for hooking, in a penalty called with 55 seconds left in regulation. Parked atop the left circle, Pominville took a pass from Christian Ehrhoff and blasted it inside the far post. Goalie Cam Ward appeared to be screened by defenseman Jay Harrison.’

Buffalo 3, Carolina 2 (OT)

‘Tyler Myers and Thomas Vanek also tallied goals for the Sabres, who won for the seventh time in nine games. Ryan Miller stopped 22-of-24 shots for the victory.’

Sabres Take Down Hurricanes in OT 3-2

‘The win pushes Buffalo back to within 2 points of 8th place Winnipeg with a road game at Boston coming up on Thursday. The Jets are also in action on Thursday evening, visiting Vancouver.’
