This Day in Sabres History :: June 23

Recommended Posts

June 23, 2000

The Sabres send Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre (aka The Hyphenator), Matt Davidson (no nickname available) and fifth-round picks in 2000 and 2001 to Columbus for future considerations. Columbus selects Dwayne Roloson and Geoff Sanderson in the expansion draft.

Details and context, anyone?

I wish I knew who was unprotected for that draft. Obviously they made the deal to protect someone else. If I remember correctly, Columbus picked those two very early, stopping Minnesota from taking any of our players.

Your wish is my demand.

Sabres exposed to the waiver draft:

Doug Gilmour

Denis Hamel

James Patrick

Domenic Pittis

Rob Ray

Dwayne Roloson

Geoff Sanderson

Richard Smehlik

Chris Taylor

Vlad Tsyplakov

Dixon Ward

Jason Woolley

As mentioned, Buffalo gave up Davidson, Grand-Pierre and the pair of 5ths, to get Columbus to take Roloson (who the BJ's did not want) and Sanderson (who they did want, but probably not enough to use their 1st forward pick on him). Grabbing these 2 kept Buffalo from losing a defenseman they wanted to keep (as a team that lost a goalie couldn't lose a D-man) and kept them from losing Gilmour or Ward as well.
