There was a statistic given in The Athletic this morning that 28% of the games played so far this season have gone to overtime. That was a surprisingly high figure to me. Also helps explain the bunched up standings.

I just did some quick calculator math while looking at last year’s standings. I got 20.7% of games going to overtime. So yeah, we’re up a bit this year.

Full disclaimer: I could very easy have made a typo or two while adding up those numbers.

What this team needs to solve “most” of its problem is for Tage, Alex and Rasmus to step up. There are other issues but them three playing up to their ceiling and they’d be in first place right now.

I get what you are saying but lets look at it closer.

Tuch is currently leading the team in points and he is on a 32 goal / 76 point pace.  This would be his second most productive scoring totals ever.  He has 17 blocked shots, which is very close to his pace last year when he led all forwards in this category.   His PK work has been excellent and he has one shorty thus far (he had 6 last season).    He seems to wear the "A" with purpose and is there for his teammates.  Tuch is getting a bunch of negative reviews at SabreSpace but to me he has consistently exceeded what I thought he was when the Sabres acquired him.   The only problem with Tuch is the upcoming contract, at his age I would not go big and long - but they might have to in order to keep him.   Its tough situation, created in part by a GM who is over his head.

Thompson is on the same scoring pace as Tuch which would be a down year for him.  We need 40+ goals and 80+ points from the top scorer.  He is shooting the puck a ton, he is working hard.   Losing Norris hurt him.   Losing Benson hurt him.  Losing Zucker, even that hurt him.   I have been saying it for a long time, he needs help on the first line.  I see effort and desire.  He is also 3rd on the team in hits.  Get him on a steady and capable line and the goals will come.

Dahlin is on a 6 goal and 57 point pace.  That is a problem.  He leads the team in TOI with 24:35 but he is last in +/- at -8.   He is not creating offense and there are not enough big plays to overshadow the occasional gaffs that you get from him.

I do agree that these 3 have to play at their ceiling for the team to succeed.

That very same article quoted last year's number as .... 20.7% !  Well done @shrader.
