With Canadian beer prices, a batch that costs $40 all-in would easily be $120 at the LCBO. With my time, obviously the per hour savings aren't great unless I'm also having fun making it... which for now I am.

The biggest benefit is the ability to customize the beer. I'm not sure if I've ever seen a cherry wheat on this side of the border. Now that I can make my own, I can make as much as I want if I like it.

To your point about washing bottles I hear you! A keg would be really nice! 🫣

Yeah my brewing was early ‘90s and it cost me $40 to make just shy of 2 cases of IPA and about $7 to go to the brewery for a growler.  I did miss the aroma and roasting the barley ( I’d snack on some of the barley out of the oven).   I didn’t miss waiting for the wort to cool so I could pitch the yeast and obviously sterilizing bottles.

My neighbor ran a microbrewery in a garage for a few years. It was successful until his brother hijacked the company and built a fancy brewpub that they lost their ass on. I've been meaning to ask if he still owns the recipes because he made some awesome stuff. His Berliner Weisse was A+.

The red or the green?  🙂  Hopefully he offered both.  The greatest aspect of that beer is that it is supposed to be less than 4% ABV..

This book got me started in home brewing.  There was a recipe in the advanced section - something to the effect of “Indialalia Pale Ale that was my go to for every other batch.  Went to a brew fest and found a local brewery making the exact same recipe. That was it for me, no more sterilizing garbage cans full of empty bottles.

Charlie is an icon.  Relax, Don't Worry, Have a Homebrew.

My reading only went up from there to reading about advanced chemical reactions, etc.  I didn't understand it.. just knew what the outcome was.

I had a pretty good bottle cleaning setup.  "Sterlizing" was never needed.  But good cleaning and sanitizing them was.

Still that was nothing compared to moving to kegs.  I have so many of those sitting around here right now.

He managed to make it just over 5% but it was still a traditional BW. I'd drink it with a nice syrup to coat the glass, raspberry usually.

Really enjoyed the "Adirondack Pale Ale" earlier today!

Mostly 2-row pale malt, a little Munich, and flaked wheat. Hopped with Cascade, Citra, and Simcoe. US 05 yeast which doesn't fully clear, but tastes like it does. Pretty basic, but I would definitely make it again!
