Players to Add for a Cup Run

Miller could backstop a serious cup run this season. The Wales Conference (it will always be called this in my mind) is weak this season, with the exception of the Caps -- who have defensive and goal tending questions. THe Sabres have a balanced club. If they stay healthy, they could make some hay. HEre are the guys I would add to the lineup to make a REAL RUN:

1) Niclas Wallin

This guy is a playoff warrior. A GREAT defensive player. He is as solid as they come. I would move him in for Butler for a deepplayoff run.

2) Ethan Moreau

He would be hard to free him up -- as he is the Oil's captain and a real treasure to the Edmonton community. However, he would be a brilliant addition by the SAbre front office. Ethan hits, is a leader (15 yr vet), and can chip in offensively. HE can skate very well for a large fella and tracks guys down with ease. More importantly, Ethan adds the desired size to the lineup, which makes Guastad move valuable and which makes the sabres bigger and more diverse. Ellis would lose his starting spot. THe OIl might want to turn the leadership keys over to Sam Gagner now.

3) Cam Janseen

A coach feels great having a proven fighter on his team. Janssen can skate and is a good team guy who would be good for a game in a hostile building. I would love to have him to neutralize Chris Neil if the Sabres play Ottawa -- as Neil has scared Sabres players for almost 10 years. Mair could be swapped out.

Souray willing to waive NTC to a team that makes "sense". Certainly scratches the itch for a PP QB and a puck moving Defensemen. Be curious to see what it would take to land him. Edmonton will certainly be in a selling mood come trade deadline. According to a report on TSN, his family is in CA so a trade to the Kings or Sharks might make "sense".

Was watching Carolina-Ottawa on the Sens feed. They were speculating that Kovalchuk might be heading to Boston to help address their goal shortage. Apparently Ottawa is in the derby as well as Los Angeles. These guys between periods were talking like LA had the best chance of getting him but the price was Kopitar and other stuff.. LA balking at Kopitar..

How does Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Kovalchuck sound?

Yes, lots of talk about Souray leaving at the deadline. His value had really dropped however. He cant stay healthy and his once booming point slapper (ala Reed Larson) seems to be a thing of the past. He is a good west coast boy, so I suppose he will go to the Sharks (if they feel Blake is finally washed up) or LA (a team that is really up and coming now with a great goalie in Quick and Dustin Brown who is a special talent; and look for Ron Hextall (LA's assis GM) to be the head GM in Philly once Paul HOmgren is let go this year or next)). Souray would bring a 2nd IMO, and that is it. Good contract for Lowe to unload. It will be a firesale come March.

Don Waddell thought about dealing Kovalchuk last year. Atlanta is now in yet another rebuilding phase. Waddell is a MORON. He traded Bradon Coburn for noting -- he now a promising defender of the highest level in Philly. Waddell of course never resigned Marc Savard -- and got nothing for him. Waddell then of course traded Hossa for Angelo Esposito -- whos last name is about the only hockey savvy thing about the kid. So, Waddell will most likely get fleeced yet again for Kovalchuk.

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Kovalchuk would be a nasty little situation. But the Wings have major injury problems to deal with all over the place (with all the Sweds out). They need depth and might have to rent a number of players as opposed to being able to get one superstar. Besides, the HAwks are the to team in the old NOrris now.

I would love to Kovalchuk go to the Caps. It would be unreal to watch that PP with BAck, Semin, OV, him and Green. Wow. Mike McPhee would have to probably give up Alzner or John CArlson to get him. And then they would have to pay him $7 - 8 million per season.
