bottlecap
I know most were not around when no professionals were allowed to play in any of the Olympics, save the underground hockey programs of the old Soviets and other "Iron Curtain" countries...but professionals, whether it's basketball, hockey etc. should not be allowed under any circumstances to play in the Olympics. The Olympics have caved in to commercialism and now the spirit of competition and good sportsmanship is just a memory, all in favor of the mighty buck. It's just wrong, but like many other wrong things these days, the money people at the top just keep making these soul-less decisions and tradition is dead. fushetti
Honestly, who cares about the olympics anymore? Every four years, i watch a guy ski down a hill... a minute of a hockey game, and watch that speed skating for about 30 seconds and then I put something else more interesting on. shoveldog
I couldn't agree more. However, the USA and a handful of others were the only ones not sending professional athletes. The Russians groomed their athletes from the time they were babies to compete in the Olympics. Was that fair? No, but it was a heck of a lot more fun to watch than these overpaid, underachievers giving half an effort because the don't want to get hurt and ruin their real meal ticket. Sad, really sad. PASabreFan
fushetti, you know you love the two-man bobsled. I agree. We will never know another Miracle on Ice, and that's a shame. Or maybe not. The first and last one will belong to the ages. BTW, is "Miracle" not the best hockey movie ever made? Gives me chills. I watched it in the theater as if I didn't know the outcome! Two or less
I think the best of the best should repersent the country, just like in figure skating. WTF is Michelle Kwan doing there? She's like 24.... but, they think he's one of the best 3 women so shes there. And why don't people argue against Bode Miller, the dude is like 29. The thing that people miss, is that many sports, like gymnastics and figure skating, ski jumping even, it's a young persons sport, so you normally see many U21 athletes in these sports, however, their still the best of the best in the world. Same should go to downhill skiing (bode), speedskating (ohno), hockey and all other sports. Let's see who is the best, and not the best ameatur. I think the only sport in the olympic games which still does ameatures instead of pros, is boxing during the summer games. The rest are best of the best. The NHL players playing is not eqivilent to the Dream Team where in theory the amateurs can do just as well, but we're sending our pros to blow everyone out of the water (in theory). It's nice to see the best players in the world on an International Ice Surface. And for those that argue that the Miracle on Ice will never be repeated...Look at Team USA's roster as it stands today, we need some 1980 magic to win a gold again!

I agree 100% although I do appreciate watching the best of each country play each other in a tournament. Which is why I ask what ever happened to the Canada Cup, or better yet World Cup? A World Cup of hockey? I last remember it being played in '97 I believe and Mike Richter was awesome. Patterned after the soccer WC and played in the summer is where I would rather watch an event like this, not in the middle of the NHL season. hopeleslyobvious
They had the World Cup in 2004. Canada won...I like the World Cup as well, but it is played on NHL sized rinks. I prefer the international sized rinks.
