  1. You can only challenge if a goal is scored.

    True.

    IMO opinion a challenge should only be an option if the offside directly led to a goal like on a stretch pass or two-on-one.  If the offensive team has the puck in the zone for more than five seconds, there should be no right to challenge an offsides.

  2. This is starting to get to a turning point quickly. The Sabres keep racking up wins and are currently only 4 points out of a playoff spot. That was almost inconceivable when the season started and especially after the first 15 games.

    Edmonton might not win 10 more games this year. Their goaltending is beyond awful. If the Sabres keep winning they might not be able to tank bad enough the rest of the season no matter how badly they play to have Edmonton pass them.

    I don't know what the right answer is...the team is playing inspired and clearly believes in themselves to a much greater degree than they did at the start of the season. They are starting to look in some ways similar to Nolan's "Hardest Working Team in Hockey" that made it to the playoffs with Hasek in goal...

    Are they really playing inspired?

    I linked to an article on the previous page that explains it in more detail but the cliff note version is: unsustainable goal tending and scoring numbers, they rarely carry play, and are generally outshout by ridiculous margins.

    As anti-tank as I am, the numbers all point to them falling back to earth relatively soon.

  3. that statement is soooooooo wrong. There are at least 5 other guys in this years draft that are looking to be 1st line players or top pair D. Its a terrific draft and goes much deeper than McDavid and Eichel. Dont, however, fall out of the bottom 7 (perferably not bottom 4).

    That being said I am still Pro Tank and have not given up hope for them to fall back into McEichel contenders. I'll re-evaluate my Tank position in another 10 games or so.

    Dont forget the #1 point leader in the OHL (ok tied with Strome) and #4 on your draft card- Mitch Marner.

    I'm anti-tank but you probably won't have much to reevaluate:

    The Sabres rank second in the NHL in save percentage since Nov. 14, behind only Pekka Rinne and the Nashville Predators. During this span Jhonas Enroth and Michal Neuvirth have combined for a .935 save percentage, and in the process have dazzled fans with their spot-on Dominik Hasek impressions.

    Enroth is probably an above average starter, but he's not Rinne. No goaltender sustains a .935 save percentage indefinitely.

    Meanwhile, the Sabres' offense - beyond toothless for the first month and change - has benefited enormously from unsustainable finishing rates. The Sabres are converting on 10.9 percent of all shots on goal since Nov. 14, the third best mark in the league over that time frame (behind the New York Rangers and the Toronto Maple Leafs).

  4. Right on, except...

    Indy drafted Gretzky.

    Well, I told you the league didn't start when the Oilers drafted Gretz - and it didn't! What more do you want?! :oops:

    Forgot that they "selected" him but didn't technically draft him. Good memory guys, I stand (sit) corrected.

  5. Games like this really exemplifies how crazy this entire tank situation is. Today in the morning skate Nolan is getting the guys fired up and ready to win a hockey game. Meanwhile, everyone else in the organization from GMTM to TP is hoping for a loss. Seriously how could any player want to be a part of this organization? For that matter how could any coach with pride want to coach in this organization?

    I agree with what you're saying. But scratching Strachan and not Meszaros to dress Benoit tells me Ted's in on it.

    Okay, not really, but it sure seemed to me that Strachan earned another game a helluva lot more than Meszaros did.

  6. Interesting thoughts from Pierre LeBrun:

    http://espn.go.com/b...o-player-safety

    Suggests changing the names of trophies from former owners to legendary players. His ideas:

    Hart (MVP) --> Gretzky

    Art Ross (points leader) --> Howe

    Norris (d-man) --> Orr

    Calder (rookie) --> Lemieux

    Lady Byng (sportsmanship) --> Beliveau

    Selke (d forward) --> Gainey

    Jack Adams (coach) --> Scott Bowman

    I know traditionalists will hate this idea. I also understand that these are named after some of the "builders" of the game. But I like the idea of renaming some, like the Norris for Orr. Gretzky on the MVP makes sense. Calder should go to Selanne instead, but it's too early for that.

    Call me a traditionalist because I don't like it at all. I'm not over the Wales and Campbell conference names being changed much less Adams, Smythe, Patrick, and Norris division names.

    There is something cool about learning what the men attached to those names did in their hockey careers. After all, the league didn't start when the Oilers drafted Gretzky.

  7. The Habs are in a bit of a funk. The Sabres are the tonic for what ails ya. Habs come out on top in this one. I know. Thats not much of a stretch at this point. Carey Price pitches another shutout. 3-cod.

    I heard Price isn't getting the start tonight.

    Montreal Canadiens at Buffalo Sabres, 7:30 p.m. ET

    Just in time: After back-to-back blowout losses the Montreal Canadiens are probably going to be fairly excited to see the Sabres on the opposite side of the ice. Having given up 11 goals over their last two games, going against the team with the lowest goals-per-game rate in the league should instill some confidence in the Habs. The Sabres, meanwhile, have had a few days to rest up and prepare for one of the East's best teams to date after a 3-2 shootout win over Detroit Sunday. Even though the Habs are playing back-to-back games, they should be angry enough to make things very difficult for Buffalo. Pick: Canadiens 6, Sabres 2

  8. I'd be willing to listen if the league wanted to rule that an automatic goal.

    It would be tough because a ref would have to determine intent on every breakaway (or play) when the net came off but overall I agree with what you're saying. I thought this time was funny because it was a once-in-lifetime thing. Hopefully.

    Did you notice him signalling for interference right after the play? I wonder if he knocked the net off its moorings out of anger after he felt he - or one of his forwards right before the breakaway - was interfered with. Or perhaps he expected a call but thought the players were ignoring a whistle and still coming at him? I dunno.

  9. As someone who defended Hodgson at times, the defense was mostly to give him time and to stop comparisons with Kassian. He's had his time and he's stopped being mentioned against Kassian. Now I'm done with him.

    I thought he would work out but just needed some time but the floating and total lack of situational awareness in his own zone that soured me.

  10. I don't think he's idolized all that much. Most fans never saw him play, after all. He meant a lot to a young franchise, gave it, along with Imlach and Roger Crozier, some instant credibility. Defensemen like Jim Schoenfeld and Mike Robitaille have spoken so highly of how well mentored the young defense. He was a father figure to them. That said, a good argument can be made that his number should not have been retired. Still, the guy did die as a Sabre, thankfully the only time that's happened in franchise history. To be clear, the Sabres didn't commission the trophy they unveiled today.

    This.

    In fact, Horton was going to retire and Punch talked him into one more year by buying him a new sports car, a Pantera from now-defunct Italian automaker DeTomaso, to return for one more season.

    And yep, that was the car he was driving that flipped and threw him 200'.

    I was too young at the time but my dad later told me he believed Punch's subsequent guilt led to his feuds with pretty much all of the players - especially Schoenfeld - and his eventual firing a few years later.

  11. And how much is Meszarous getting paid???? What Gorges is getting paid is not the point.

    You said he's giving more than he's getting. I think I made it clear that I think 3.9MM is pretty fair for the type of player he his; he'll be okay...

    I think the whole "ruined by losing" mantra is overblown. Keith and Seabrook played on bad teams for their first couple of years in Chicago. And, it didn't "ruin" them. I'm not sure I get the whole "keep them in Rochester because losing in Buffalo will hurt their development" argument. In life we learn more in defeat than we do in victory. If these guys have such fragile psyches that they'll be ruined forever by a bad season then they shouldn't be professional athletes. And, if these kids in Rochester are better than the veterans ahead of them, they should be up with the big club. If they aren't ready for the NHL, fine... but a guy like Larsson is ready for a shot. So is Pysyk. Perhaps others as well.

    Bingo.

    I believe there are players that get ruined by losing, and you know why? Because those players are losers. So maybe they're actually not "ruined" by losing, but they are exposed by losing.

    And bingo again. Enough with treating losing hockey games like it's a contagious and chronic medical condition.

  12. It's hard for me to believe that anyone playing on this team for all or most of the season won't be ruined by the experience.

    So how will we un-tank next season? How did Chicago do it? Were they able to shake good players out of the tank funk and recycle them into Champions?

    Chicago realized players aren't pre-programmed robots. They understood good players will be part of the solution while bad ones will be replaced by young guys with more skill.

  13. Have to feel for the guy. His heart and soul was in Montreal. Came here and has been nothing but the ultimate professional. He is giving this team far more than they are giving him. You want to see how bad organizations ruin good players keep watching.

    He's an all-guts player, no doubt. And he's getting paid $3,900,000.00 per year so let's not act like he's in Buffalo doing charity work.

    And given his character, I'm pretty sure he'll play a role in bringing the Sabres up, not the other way around (unless GMTM gets a trade offer he can't refuse).

  14. At least they are making it easier to root against them. Once Reinhart and Zadarov are gone you have about 5 guys playing that are part of this teams future. I don't want the rest of these clowns that are just passing through town to mess this up.

    If we were playing guys like Grigs, Reinhart, etc I would want wins. Benoit, Meszarous, etc. No thanks. Just do your job and ensure us McEichle. That is why your here.

    You do know about the lottery right?
