If these 5 teams win out, PIT ends up with 96, NYI, FLA and the Sabres end up with 95, and OTT ends up with 90. (Of course BUF plays FLA and OTT, FLA plays BUF and OTT) So I think the Sabres control their destiny, but we might be boned by the "regulation win" tiebreaker. (RW) We only have 28 while NYI and FLA each have 33, and PIT has 29.

I know everyone expected the Sabres to be up and down this year, but this playoff race has just truly been unreal.  Several times it has felt like they are completely out of it.. and then a few games later they are back in it.

I guess where I am going with this.. is that it feels insane that we still have a good shot at this.

It's better than that - we have three games at hand on the Islanders - if we win those three we're tied but we'd have more wins

Thanks for the correction, I think I was looking at the standings and they weren't updated yet.  Sounds like they are definitely within striking distance!

That’s what I’m asking. If he wins today, is he going to be perceived as the starter for next season until proven otherwise, the calls for Adams to upgrade this summer dismissed?

If he wins today he will be given more starts before the season ends (and he might be given more starts regardless of tonight's results).  So it's not like we will just have the results of this game to off of.

Always have liked seeing Jost with VO, they had a nice run in the middle of the season until they jumbled the lines.  Maybe adding Greenway who is an okay passer and decent defender will help the Olofsson/Jost line even more

I know we are all (justifiably) not high on VO, but wouldn't be awesome to see him going on a tear as the season comes to an end?

Looking ahead it looks like there's the following matchups:

Wednesday: FLA vs TOR, NYI vs WSH

Thursday: FLA vs MTL, PIT vs NSH,

    Friday: BUF vs NYR

Saturday: PIT vs BOS, BUF vs PHI, FLA vs CBJ, NYI vs TBL

Sunday: NYI vs CAR, PIT vs PHI

The teams ahead of us all have a bunch of loseable games coming up... Its possible that provided the Sabres do their part that we can ground by the end of the weekend.

Beating NYR and PHI will be big IF's though... But it'd be great to see the bandwagon rockin again if they do.

The isles are out of striking distance at this point IMO.  But if Pitt continues at this rate, they are going to play themselves out of the playoffs.  It's been there for the taking as pretty much all the teams fighting for 8th have gone ice cold.  Pitt, Fla, Buff, Wash, and Ottawa have all been awful their last 10.  It's almost like no one wants to actually take the spot

I think it's a legitimate option. Bottom line is this is a team that has showed it can win, with high scoring potential. They were in a great position to take a playoff spot, with plenty of time to pull further ahead, and instead they have completely bombed. It's possible Granato has taken them as far as he is able, and it's not far enough.

You don't think any of that scoring potential has anything to do with our offensive minded coach?  Or that the late season melt down has anything to do with our poor goaltending and/or young team?

Let the guy see it through, these "fire the coach" takes are just so reactionary.  Look at the last 2 seasons as a whole and your opinion should change.  I'm on board with a coaching staff hire to aid Granato with coaching a more structured defensive approach, but firing him -at this point- is a terribly bad idea

It isn't IMPO. Dahlin and Power both do it and Dahlin does it better.

I agree they both do it, but they are also frequently not in a position to do so because they cheat in when on offense.  The fact that Samuelson tends to stay home whereas the other two do not makes him a really good compliment that they sorely miss when he's not around

  8. He's so important because, sadly, his skillset is unique among our defenseman.  A defensive defender who can separate the man from the puck efficiently and then move the puck away.  IMO, his absence is felt more sharply because we simply don't have anyone else that is like him (yet).  They need another defensive defenseman in the top 4 so that we have redunancy in his skill set.. so we aren't screwed when he inevitably misses more games.
