“In certain regions, ‘donnie’ is a colloquial term for a close friend or companion.” “The locals often greet each other with a warm ‘Hey, donnie! How’s it going?'”
Sabers were a real Donnie this past year.

I was wondering who actually fired Ruff and would Lindy harbor any ill will toward the Sabres which is how I tripped over the article. From the article,
What kind of team would do such a thing???
Hmmm - I believe someone within the organization has ties to Pittsburgh..

Is Mike Sullivan's contract over this summer?
Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan agreed to a three-year contract extension by General Manager Ron Hextall. The extension will kick in at the conclusion of the 2023-24 campaign, and run through the 2026-27 season. This was announced in August of 2022.
Internet talk is he might become available before the new contract kicks in...

Lol - I asked an AI program who will be the sabers next head coach. Here is the response:
The Buffalo Sabres recently dismissed head coach Don Granato after a 13-season playoff drought. General Manager Kevyn Adams is now searching for a replacement.
1-Craig Berube: Former St. Louis Blues head coach who led the team to a Stanley Cup victory in 2019. Berube has experience and knows how to work quickly.
2-Bruce Boudreau: A seasoned coach who has won 1,087 games as a head coach in Anaheim, Washington, Minnesota, and Vancouver. He’s been to the playoffs 10 times in 16 seasons and won the Jack Adams Award for outstanding coaching with the Washington Capitals.
3-Dallas Eakins: Previously coached the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks. While his tenure with the Oilers was short-lived, he has a good rapport with players.
4-Gerard Gallant: Known for leading the Vegas Golden Knights to the Stanley Cup finals in their inaugural season. He also had success with the Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers.
The Sabres are looking for someone who can relate to young players and push the team to perform better. The goal is to find the perfect hire and end their playoff drought.

Question, if you were an unemployed experienced NHL coach, would you want to take this job?

Biggest Sabres issue... Terry Pegula.
You would think he would be asking the tough questions. Why the bad starts? What did "we" (coaches, GM, etc.) do about it? Was there other options for correction?
From there it is up to him to hand out pink slips or not.

Sabers wont sign anyone and put anyone on the roster. They think they are in the playoffs.

This is on the players not the coaches, IMHO.
Ok, maybe, lets say you have a car that doesn't like cold weather. When it is parked outsite you and start it in the morning you have to pump it three time, wait for the fuel pump to stop buzzing and turn the key(dating myself with all the push buttons today). Do you recognize the problem and do something, or just accept it that it doesn't like cold weather?
Lets say you are working and have a coworker who is always late and causes work issues for you during the day. Do you do nothing and just deal with the extra headaches?
Who has responsibility for the above? Poor start to games = coaches, car issues = the owner, coworker issue = management.
Leadership -the action of leading a group of people or an organization. This is missing with this team.

Still Yerdon and Lysowski think Appert is on the list of AHL head coaches NHL clubs are looking at.
I am sure the media will create their own pipe dream. I still can think differently. I would not hire him as the next head coach.

I think Appert would be a big upgrade from Granato. I mean, it would be hard to get any worse, unless they brought back Ralph.
Currently the Amerks have given up 10 more goals then they have scored this year. In addition, they only have like 7 guys (40 games or more) that are on the "*" side of the fence.
He would not be my choice. Need "fresh" set of eyes.

Veteran leadership specifically. This is what you can expect when the team building focus is “don’t block the kids”.
If our roster changes for next season include Kulich, Rosen, Savoie, replacing our FA’s this will happen again next season.
I believe there is room for both if the roster is managed properly. However it remains to be seen.

Last night was a recap of the season. Not sure what they were thinking on some of those passes. Then the defense decided to play Dionne Warwick and let Kane just walk on by.
I start to cry each time we meet
Walk on by, walk on by-

We can all speculate on what happens in the Dugout or behind closed doors. As a fan, what I see on the field is more important. There where times when he took plays off, wouldn't block, and sometimes short armed receptions. I will miss the drama and excitement he brought when he was on, but lately it was more drama than excitement.

Been thinking about this thread for days. I don’t buy the whole approach of comparing the Sabres to bottom dwellers. True, they all have losing in common. But there’s fundamental flaws in most of these teams. There are teams out there, no matter what they do, and they will still lose. Some say they are “cursed” or ownership or whatever. Who knows. But these are certainly not the teams we should use as a yardstick for progress. If an “educated” opinion believes they are, they prove they are likely part of the problem, not the solution. As such, their opinion should be ignored.
Please share the fundamental flaws of the Sabers and fix them already. You would make every fan happy!
I compare the Sabers to the Bruins, we still suck.

Read complete scouting
report from EP draft guideAnton is a big centre with good wheels. He is a fast skater with a long stride. He is strong on his skates and covers the puck well. He likes to come with speed and challenge the defence. He is good at deking close to his body and to take the puck to the inside. Wahlberg can truly hold on to a puck. He has the qualities needed to work the boards, extend possession, and create better offensive looks for his team.

I'd re-hire Ruff in a second to replace Granato. He is the only coach in Sabres history who proved he could adjust his style to maximize the players he had. No coach can succeed without good players, but some coaches, and I include Ruff in that group, can make a good group better.
Of the 3 highest peeks in Sabre history, Ruff was the coach for two of them.
I would try and go after a coach with a better history of winning is the jist of the whole thing for me. Neither are good enough. Maybe one does not exist??

Dooooooood.
How can you look two records where one coach won more games than the lost and the other coach lost more games than they won and go "Seeeeeee they have the same win percentage".
Lindy: 571-510 (571 wins/1081 games), W% .528
Meatballs: 112-144, (112win/256 games) W% .437For W% you have to move OTL to L. Otherwise you have to use P%.
I don't know what you did, but you didn't math properly....like at all. They don't have the same W% or the same P% and it isn't particularly close.
Ties are not considered in "winning" percentage. It is based on WINS.

2005-06 after season lost
-JB Dumont
-Mike Grier
-Jay McKee
2006-07 after season lost
-Chris Drury
-Daniel Briere
-Dainius Zubrus
2007-08 after season lost (still got the team to 41 wins )
Brian Campbell
I understand, compare those teams to the one that is on the ice now. Which one would you choose?

I think there is a chance that you just made this up.
EDIT: Aparently D-O-N-G Ranato gets censored. What a bummer. Such a great opportunity there.Games played is off by 84 for LR
Not sure why the difference in the actual numbers between the two sites. 80 somthing off for games played for Ruff and 20 something for Donnie.

Why is it so hard to think DG and Lindy have the a similar wining percentage? Dg's numberes will change alot because of the small sample size. As a wise person told me, perception and reality are two different things. That is why we have data.

Who will be the next Head Coach of the Buffalo Sabres?

Posted · Edited by MISabresFan
Correct, no "head coaching" experience.
Beginning in the 2012–13 season, Peca was named head coach of the Buffalo Jr. Sabres of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), where he coached through the 2013–14 season. After the 2012–13 season, he was named OJHL Coach of the Year. In his two years coaching, he had 66 wins in 108 regular season games. Michael Peca served as head coach of the Bantam Major Jr. Sabres in addition to his duties as general manager and director of hockey operations for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres.
On February 10, 2021, Peca was hired by the Washington Capitals to be a player development coach working with the "taxi squad" players for the 2020–21 season. In 2021, he was hired by the Buffalo Sabres as an assistant coach with their American Hockey League affiliate, the Rochester Americans.
Peca was announced as an assistant coach with the Rangers on June 20, 2023, joining under new head coach Peter Laviolette.
Jeff Halpern - same
On June 27, 2016, the Tampa Bay Lightning announced that Halpern would serve as a full-time assistant coach for the Lightning's AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch.
On June 22, 2018, the Tampa Bay Lightning named Halpern as assistant coach after parting ways with Rick Bowness. As an assistant coach, he won the Stanley Cup with the Lightning in the 2020 and 2021 seasons. On July 7, 2021, Halpern won his second Stanley Cup as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Neither have head coaching experience. According to Adams they won't be considered.
Is it neccessary to have NHL experience?
He began his coaching career in 1999–2000 with Lansing Catholic High School and led the team to its first regional hockey championship in 25 years. The following season (2000–01) he served as an assistant with the Capital Centre Pride of the North American Hockey League, the only time during his coaching career he was an assistant. During the 2001–02 season, he was the head coach of the Metro Jets in the North American 3 Hockey League and led the Jets to the Silver Cup – the USA Hockey National Junior B Championship.[7] In 2002–03, he coached the Honeybaked Midget Major AAA team.
In 2003, he returned to the North American Hockey League (NAHL) to coach the expansion Texarkana Bandits. In 2004–05 he was named the NAHL Coach of the Year after leading the Bandits to a 36-15-5 record, then continued with the Bandits franchise when it relocated to St. Louis in 2006–07. During the 2006–07 season, the Bandits captured the Robertson Cup as league champion. The following season the Bandits would once again capture the Robertson Cup. Additionally, he won his second NAHL Coach of the Year that season. He spent a total of five seasons coaching in the NAHL before moving on to coach the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League. In his five seasons coaching the Bandits franchise in the NAHL, he compiled an overall record of 198-74-18.
He was the coach of the United States Hockey League (USHL)'s Green Bay Gamblers starting in 2008. He led the team in 2008–09 and 2009–10 to a combined record of 84–27–9.[9] In 2010, the team won the Clark Cup for the League's championship and he was named USHL Coach of the Year. He is the only coach to win a championship in all three tiers of junior hockey in the United States.
In 2010 became NHL Head coach.
