Not to be a smartass because announcers say it all the time, but what is a HOMERUN PASS? - those words should not be used together - I know what you mean but just hate that phrase.

Never thought I would say this, but I am glad Ottawa is next up, with Panthers (2), Montreal (1) and New Jersey as four of the last five games, the Sabres have really struggled with D-minded teams. Looking forward to some up and down the ice hockey.
Was thinking this last night: How long has it been since we have seen the perfectly executed homerun pass from the D to the O? We saw so much of that early and now it is extremely rare. Teams are adjusting.
Did you see the pasting Ottawa took last night from the Dixie Chicks? Ottawa had one good game against Detroit (3-2) and has lost to Columbus (2-6), Caps (2-6), Nashville (0-6), Rangers (1-3). So that means they have been outscored 23-8 in their last five. This has definitely been a momentum killing road trip. Does look like they enjoy giving up six goals though having done it three times in their last five. That makes me somewhat nervous though. Last time they were on the ropes, they played Buffalo and got well.

This game is getting under my skin.
Sabres start the third with an advantage. They need to drive it home.

They have had the better chances.

Continuing a trend of late, first PP was HORRIBLE. No shots on goal..

On a positive note, Sabres are skating tonight and have had the better of the play in the first.

Hard to fix the PP vs. NJ.
I wasn't looking for it to get fixed, just show some signs of life. I know NJ is tough, but the last two were certainly during times when momentum was in Buffalo's favor. They had some shots on goal during the last two and extended play in the Devil's zone. 1/5 would have been acceptable.

Someone described this as a "playoff-game" type of effort. I think that was a good description.
Was nice to see some D being played.
The powerplay is officially broke. It looked awful in the first, better in the second and better still in the third and still they got nothing for it.

On the Miller penalty.
He was outside the trapezoid by a foot or two. He brought the puck into the trapezoid on his backhand and move toward the back of the net. He then changed to his forehand and shot it out the other side.
He was pretty adamant that he didn't do anything worng. Ruff looked calm. Never has fully understood the ruling myself.

They actually played D that period.
Interesting move to put Vanek on the 4th line. Heck, Mair might be able to score with him there.

This doesn't come as a surprise to anyone on this board, or at least shouldn't; teams are adjusting to the Sabres style. Scoring is off. Is it the opposition D strategy or is it the PPPP (positively pathetic power play)?
How much? Consider these stats from the Buffalo News today:
Avg. goals last nine games: 2.8
Avg. goals first 22 games: 4.6
Avg. shots last nine: 25.1
Avg. shots first 22: 30.1
Avg. goals allowed last nine: 2.6
Avg. goals allowed first 22: 3.1
The question, does Ottawa have the patience to play "stuff the blue line"?
