  1. Bettman has progressively made the league more corporate, less fun and less interesting.

    I could’ve endured that.

But then Terry came along and destroyed the Sabres franchise (apparently, by most accounts, in a perfectly well-meaning way).

I am pretty much done at this point and would not be too bothered if the team was sold and moved.  The product is terrible and the fans are being punished for their patience.

The odd thing here is that the turnover in GM's and HC's has been fairly frequent over the years, meaning no real stability in the management.  That said, Pegula keeps hiring MEDIOCRITY, which results in that frequent turnover.  So yes, Pegula tolerates mediocrity because that is all that he hires.

Pegula doesn’t like being embarrassed and he reacts to it.  In prior years, internal dysfunction has spilled out into the open and embarrassed the owners and they have reacted to it.  Now?  The Sabres are a well-functioning organ of mediocrity.  By most appearances everyone is on the same page.  The coaches, GM, scouts, media team are all operating in sync.  Stasis has been achieved with the local reporters, no one is asking too difficult questions.  No Tyler Dunne “hit pieces” on that side of the business.  Sabres alumni are no longer being given misspelled jerseys. Franchise values keep growing steadily.   It’s total kumbaya.  I don’t see anything that would make Terry fidgety.

No.  I am surprised you believe this?   Adam’s is all set as long as he will continue to execute the Pegula EEE plan, he will hold his job.  They still have a half dozen prospects to try to rush into the NHL in the next year or two.  That is the plan because no one of any consequence will come to play for Buffalo.   None of this plan has anything to do with winning those games you mentioned, or even making the playoffs this season.  None of it matters.  Pegula prefers to have no more turnover but he might get rid of DG if he absolutely has to.    Fan unrest might push that along.

This is not an organization that wants to win.  Do you know what the last straw was on the Blues firing Betube?   It was their 6-4 home win against Buffalo.  The owner had a fit because Buffalo tied the game and totally outplayed his team for about 40 minutes.  Berube called a timeout and the Blues scored two quickies but the owner knew they barely beat a bad team with an AHL goalie (UPL), and he saw a pattern that teams were dictating their game to his team in his arena.   He was afraid the team was getting soft.  He was afraid of missing the playoffs two years in a row.  Being outplayed by Buffalo, even in a win, was the last straw.  It took him a few days to get the GM on board but the Buffalo game was the end for Berube.

Terry Pegula is the opposite.  His hockey knowledge is extremely limited, and he overrates himself on top of that.   He runs other businesses that are more important to him than the Sabres.   His wife is ill.  He just wants Adams to keep the status quo while the prospects cook.

Some companies tolerate mediocrity and others don’t.  It’s kind of that simple.  Customers can almost always tell which is which.

The biggest question for me is WHY has Pegula repeatedly and consecutively handed out Sabres' head coaching and GM jobs to people with NO NHL EXPERIENCE being HC or GM? WHY? Is he trying to save money? Is he passively trying to wreck the team? Is it DEI? WHY??

My only conclusion is: The Sabres are an amateur-run organization.

He has done the exact same thing with the Bills, except for his one foray with Rex Ryan where he probably felt like he got swindled.  That was it.  Otherwise he's been completely addicted to rookie GMs and mostly addicted to rookie HCs.

    Nice man, terrible executive.

It's a lot easier to stomach once you come to the realization that for this franchise winning isn't as important as relationships.

The guys on the team all get along really well, they're all getting paid now and Granato doesn't hold them accountable for poor performances.   They're on easy street.   So why would they want to change anything?

It's OK to lose as long as everyone is enjoying each other's company.

That mentality has trickled down the organization.   The only way that changes is if somebody decides it's not OK to lose... and that starts by holding folks accountable, not just players or coaches.

And that accountability needs to start at the top with ownership.  It’s high time that winning actually became the number one organizational goal.  Not just “sustained winning over many years” but actually winning NOW.  Start winning now and then work towards sustaining it.

    This franchise punishes its fans.

  6. I am increasingly of the view that the problem is at the top: the owner has no clue, still, how to hire folks and how to set standards that elevate the organization.  The Sabres are someone’s poorly-run and neglected hobby.
