Lots of kids in the building because of all the MLK weekend tournaments in the area.  The guy trying very hard to get the wave going was with one of those groups.  (His kids team was one of the ones that was down in the 100's and taking their shirts off after some kids in the 300's got onto the Jumbotron for taking theirs off.)

Just trying to keep the kids into the game.  And they all seemed to be even though the result wasn't the one the majority of the fans wanted to see.  But there were more 'Nucks fans in the crowd than expected.  At least 5%, maybe even 10% were wearing some variant of the 'Nucks sweaters through the years.  (There was one really sweet green and black one that a bunch of people were wearing.  No idea when they wore that nor what special occasion it was for, but that one was really sharp.)

Was happening Thurs too but at least we were up 4-1 or something.  I get it vs kids & average fan, just contradicts my delusions of playoff intensity / important games.

No they didn't. He was stapled to Jack's wing almost from the get go. The centers were Eichel and ROR.

Reinhart was always good but because he didn't hit things hard enough ppl didn't like him.

Can confirm dislike. Sorta like Pominvilles game.  Nice piece, but if you don't surround it with "hard to play against" it won't translate to Ws.  Also he gave off a smug vibe, opposite of Cozens.

Every time Ryan Johnson plays it becomes evident that he should be a regular on one of the pairings. There is a maturity to his game that belies his inexperience. He's not your typical rookie player who is feeling his way in the big league. He simply belongs. And it is evident that Clifton has steadied his game after his early season uneven play. He seems to have gotten comfortable with his teammates and his role.

Was at the game last night, Johnson was super noticeable, playing hard and with purpose. Like you say maturity, confidence, and maybe a chip on his shoulder "don't scratch me again".  Two thumbs up.  Looking forward to tomorrows game vs #1 offense in the league.

Stultze was taken off powerplay. They now have old school type coach who will take away ice time not a philosopher coach like Granato. Will they call up Kurlich with Skinner out?

Complain again how sabres bid against themselves to give skinner 9 million a year AND a no movement clause. No one else was interested in him. Just boggles the mind.

Rant over. I dont live near any Sabres folks and Brothers and i are tired of talking about the Sabres.

I feel ya.  TSN guys talk about no "bump" from coaching change in OTT, and wonder do they change again? (consensus, no)  Honestly sounds worse than Buffalo except our drought is longer.

Dahlin will be fine; he's presently playing 25min + a night with a defensively suspect system. Part of the issue he's had this year can be summed up as a combination being banged up and getting angry at their general "success." After all he's the one who penned a letter to the fans and yet the team still looked bad. If you can't rely on your teammates to do what they are supposed to do; it can certainly create further exhaustion as well as building agitation.

The Beniers goal sums it up nicely, Dahlin and Power are on the ice over a minute and are winded. Power flips the puck to no one in particular and its caught by the Kraken player. Meanwhile Dahlin is pivoting back to cover the center lane since Power and I believe Greenway are on the bottom part of the screen with two Kraken. Before Dahlin has even finished his loop, which naturally gets wider the more tired you become, the Kraken are racing in with 3 with speed, Power is tired in the bottom corner, Greenway is more or less flat footed but forces the play away from the center lane. Now a healthy/fresh Dahlin can cut that angle off when Beniers gets the puck but in his present condition he can't quite get there fully but can still shove his lane wide. However Beniers shoots and scores a goal Levi should of had and Dahlin's anger with his teammates and himself immediately show up as he smashes his stick.

Good stuff.  But he's -16 and every other d-man in the same system is even or +.  And night after night there's boneheaded plays off his stick.  He's supposed to be the opposite, like the Quinn Hughes is doing right now.  Do we need to whip out the P word again?

I think it's far too soon to say that. Besides, Dahlin is 10x better offensively/defensively than Ristolainen could ever be.

Or do you mean he is simply going to request a trade soon?

Agreed on Clifton and Erik Johnson. They're doing what they're suppose to do

I mean he's just not figuring it out/maturing into playing a smart, clean defensive game. Like Risto there's some good plays (risto physical, dahlin skating/stick skills) but in the end the mistakes are big and compounding and cost the team the victory on a lot of nights.  I still have some hope he'll figure it out, but it's predominantly his fault they will miss the playoffs this season.  25 minutes a night, and -16, of course you can't win.

One would figure he should know how, already.

He was a hard working 4th line type of player, when he played. He was on a cup winning team. Out of all the GMs previous during the last 12 years, he should theoretically have the most knowledge when it comes to building a team.

That Carolina team was balanced top to bottom. They added key players at the trade deadline. Was there a little luck involved? Yes. Cam Ward was unbelievable during those playoffs. Im sure even they had no clue he'd be that good. I think they benched Gerber at some point, too.

Add in some awful injury luck for the Sabres as well.

The point still stands, that formula still applies. Even today. What is Adams doing? Not enough.

And he doesn't seem to realize it. Shame

Fair but can we talk about Dahlin's play?
KA added Clifton and EJ on the blue line and they have been as advertised / expected. Very nice compliments. (toughness, physical, and veteran leadership)
Dahlin has been a huge disappointment.  He is the single biggest problem on the team.  I don't know what the solution is, unfortunately it's looking like he's Risto-esque.

  8. Can we have a discussion about what a terrible defensive player he is this year?
As noted in last nights game thread, there are now only 7 defensemen in the entire NHL worse than Dahlin in terms of +/-.
    He's sitting at a -16, on pace for -32.
And his +/- is inflated due to, is it 5(?), empty net goals.
And all 7 players ahead (behind?) him play on truly terrible teams - either San Jose, Anaheim, or Chicago.
The only other Sabre below even this year is Jacob Bryson at -1.
All other Sabres are positive. (Lead by Clifton at +4).

This is truly insane.  And so I'd suggest he is by far the single biggest reason the team is not moving forward this year.  It's not Terry, it's not Kevyn, it's not Don, it's not Levi, UPL, EJ, or TNT.  It's right before our noses, our franchise All Star defenseman, Rasmus Dahlin.  And now signed for $11 per for 8 years which will put him #2 paid D in the league next year behind Karlsson.  You can't make this ***** up.  There will be suffering.

    Link to stats here.

And yeah admittedly I'm not a fancy stats guy but if anyone want to show em to refute, please do and I'll try.  Otherwise, sticking my eye test and these stats.

Dahlin is really talented, but boy, he's not that great of a hockey player.

I would call a time out right now.

Let's look at the stats.  Coming into tonight, despite 5 (?) empty net goals he's a -13 for the season.  Only 12 defensemen in the NHL are worse this year. (and 9 of the 12 play for either Anaheim, SJ, or Chi). That's insane.  And he's -2 tonight.  Norris consideration is 1000 miles away for this guy.  Link if you dare.

We now know the DG is not an advanced stats guy, but just basic stats and eyeballs say sitting R Johnson or Joki while playing E Johnson makes the team measurably worse.  I just don’t get it.

I guess the whole “don’t want to block young players” doesn’t apply anymore, especially when it seems to be working so well sitting 6 from the bottom in league.

But we want vets on the team / in the line-up.  And he's the only true stay-at-home D now that 23 is having an identity crisis.  EJ has to be in the line-up.  Sit Power or Joker instead.
