  1. It all just looked a little too much like the usual (last years) to make me feel good about the potential. Too early to judge for sure though.

Regarding Housley though, I have my doubts. Dude, it's a home game, why are you not working harder at keeping Bergeron away from Jack? Bergeron shuts down everybody and if you're going to load up a top line you don't want it on the ice with him.

The guy I really wonder about though is Skinner. So far he looks like a guy who is just passing time and doesn't want to be here. Overrated? I don't know his history but did his linemates maybe make him look better than he is? At the moment, this is Okposo v2 and if he doesn't have a good year we wont' even get anything decent at the deadline.

Again, too early, but it does raise question marks and doubts.

  2. bruins playing Caps tonight (and being out skated and blown out right now) so why wouldn't you want your team to be well rested and ready to go? non issue. judge them by the on ice performance tomorrow. If we come out slow or flat, it'll be a long season.

Nothing for Pominville?  or Reinhart?  I would've picked either of them over Nogo Bogo, and prolly over Okposo too.... but then again, I'm not in that room so I'll just trust the process here.

Pominville is a has been and non consideration. Reinhart is a question mark and playing with Jack doesn't make sense.  Bogo is a veteran D man and one would assume will speak for the vets. It is perhaps an attempt to revitalize him as well. If he is injured it'll be stuck on someone else's jersey no big deal.

Knew Jack would be Captain the minute they gave him the contract. Its really a no alternative scenario. We are all in on Jack (and in a little while Rasmus)and if he fails we will fail. If he succeeds so will we.

I gotta ask, then why do you watch it?

Players are an asset for owners and that's it. So of course they care about their health while they are players. After retirement not so much. But really, what company does? So what, they're all rich.

  5. Wow, way more negativity than I expected to see. Oh well, comes from years of losing I guess.

I liked Hutton. Don't think he'll be an allstar or anything but he looks like he will be calm and stable and reliable. Big change from Lehner and he handles the puck really well which should help a lot with quick transition. Big improvement for us there.

I think Skinner and Eichel need time to gel, but I like the early signs. Jack has always lacked players who can keep up with him and Skinner can so with a little more time together I think we will see some solid scoring there. Our top line should be able to play with anyone.

The problem comes on line 2. No way what we have can compete if Tavares and Matthews were 1, 2 on the other side. We will have a lot of trouble with any team that has two solid scoring lines and speed. We are faster, but maybe not fast enough yet.

Dahlin's a kid, take it easy on him. He will be just fine.

I think the D is vastly improved. If he stays healthy, Bogo as a 5/6 guy is pretty solid. Beaulieu not so much. Still makes really dumb mistakes, totally unreliable. I'd like to see them try Guhle/Bogo as our 5/6 instead.

Overall, I think we are a lot better than last year but if you look at our division, we are not as good as the annoying Leafs  (who have already won the cup if you listen to their drooling media) or Tampa and probably not as good as Boston either. So wildcard at best, and that'll be a stretch.

I think we will compete way more often than last year and will entertain way more than last but we will still lose a lot of close ones and probably come up a little short. With luck and good fortune however, who knows. For the first time in a long time I think playoffs are not impossible.

  6. I liked what I saw from Tage. I think he has real potential and with some good coaching and a good attitude he could develop into a decent goal scorer if he's paired with a playmaker. Has to learn to use that reach better on D though.

I'm not sure what to make of Ullmark. He's a little too much like Lehner at times for me. Big guy, makes a brilliant save at one moment, but let's in a soft one the next. I want consistency in goal and I'm not sure he is it (yet).

Nylander had flashes. He just might make this team.

The guy who really disappoints me is Mittlestadt. All the hype, but I'm sorry, this guy looks lost our there. He is definitely not ready. Assuming Sam is on the wing, we are looking pretty weak down the middle after Eichel.

The D isn't worth commenting on since it's possible none of the ones on the ice tonight may be on the team. Guhle and Nelson were the best of them I guess.

It's worthwhile to note that Guhle-Nelson was one of the better performing pairs at CF% 56.80 over 127:15 last year.  I'm starting to get the impression that Housley is either data driven or what he's seeing and deciding happens to match the data.

Perhaps he is data driven for his initial pairings and will adjust them based on performance and development?

  8. Great deal.

I'm still not sure about him. I think it's a wise move not to reward a guy long term who hasn't showed a full season yet. If he's great he'll get rewarded and if he isn't, it's cap friendly. A long term deal was too much of a gamble. I actually would't be surprised if JBot does not see him as part of the long term future, tried hard to trade him, but no one was willing to gamble and offer substantial return so this option is a safe move.

    imo another positive for JBot.

  9. I'm going to just go with cautiously optimistic.

I am sure Dahlin will evolve into a superstar but how fast is anyone's guess. This is a whole new roster in many ways. Lots of guys who play a different sort of hockey then we saw last year. Lots of potential and possibilities but I'll be honest. I have no idea how good these St. Louis guys will be or the kids, or the goaltending or how any of this will gel or if they will finally play the way Housely promised, I simply have no idea.

I am hopeful the locker room problems are all gone and that Jack will step up and lead and it'll exceed expectations but I just don't know. I believe firmly we are finally on the right track and we will be better than last year but by how much and how fast, no idea.

  10. I don't think Housley has to make the playoffs to save his job. I think it rests most heavily on his relationship with Dahlin. I firmly believe Dahlin is the cornerstone of this team and more important than Eichel or anyone else. Everything will center on this.

Housley will be expected to bring about 2 things. First, the change in culture has to become a reality. JBot has moved the bodies he felt needed to be moved and now the expectation will be that Housley has to get the rest to buy in and the attitude and culture have to be a new reality or the next change will be Housley and we will likely get a disciplinarian as another attempt (if that fails the heat shifts to JBot). Second, the team will have to show the style he advocated and promised us. The attacking, the speed, the puck possession and the quick transition by the D. JBot obviously wants that style so if Housley still can't deliver it, we'll get somebody else to try.

Playoffs is a bonus, but if we get a competitive team that plays fast and exciting (and Housley and Dahlin get along) then Housley is safe to start the next season, and then playoffs might be expected.

    Bottom 5:

    27.  Nashville

    28.  Columbus

    29.  Washington

    30.  San Jose

    31.  Pittsburgh

Is this an indication that they traded their depth away to "win now"?

Not sure about Columbus, but I think it's an indication of feeling they were close and trading away for the immediate in the last few years. Nashville felt they were just a step away when they lost in the final. Washington knew they had a small window and Pitt knows their big guns are getting closer and closer to the decline years. Nashville I think is the one that blew it. San Jose I thought had some decent prospects still but they were all in on Tavares and that was a colossal mistake so we'll see how that shakes out.

About us, we were told a few years back we had a full cupboard and then suddenly it was empty again and now it's being restocked. Penetrating look into the obvious, but none of it means anything unless your prospects  actually step up and become nhl'ers.

I like what JBot has done though. All those D men. often these guys take a little longer to develop and with a slew of them at various stages of readiness we POTENTIALLY can become a defensive powerhouse and have the wonderful future dilemma of too many good D men and the ability to trade some of them to "win now" (in a few years).

Would like to see a larger goalie stockpile, but one step at a time I guess.

Schiefele had one solid year under his belt when he signed the deal. 29-32-61.

He had one assist in four playoff games to that point.

I didn't really follow Winnipeg, but I think, from things said lately, that he showed real leadership abilities from day 1 so it was an easier bet to make. probably a bargain. People say Sam has hockey smarts, but I don't think we've seen leadership from him or consistent play. matter of fact, he's often called slow or soft (not entirely fair, but those things get said) and his work ethic has been questioned (as has Eichel's) so there is no solid reason to dump the money at him. The smarter gamble says he is unlikely to be better than he's shown.

They weren’t able to consistently force their way on to historically bad teams 3 years running.  If Botteril is serious about building a winning culture he’ll make it even more difficult for them to make the team, not provide them an open slot.

I agree fully they won't get an "open slot" and this year is likely their last shot, but they may also be the only stop gap options if they want everyone to play a certain way (up tempo). The leash will be short.

I'd still offer him the scheifele deal, 8x6.2 mill .

I'm sorry but this is crazy to me. Scheifele was a leader on that team and a playoff stud. In no way has Sam shown anything near that. Let me put it this way, would anyone here not embrace a one for one swap of those players (aside from lurking Jets fans)? They'd riot in Winnipeg if they did that.

Just don't see why so many people want to dump money and term at a guy who has not (yet) given us a full season, and although decent at times, at other times has looked downright dreadful. The fact that this deal is taking so long makes me think JBot might feel the same way. Barring a trade, a bridge deal is the only way to go imo.

If Botterill is serious about the nee for speed, Baptiste and Bailey are on the team come October.

I'd change that to Baptiste and Bailey get a serious shot at making the team. What we still desperately need is someone/anyone who can actually finish and put the puck in the net.
