You can end up in cap hell either way, look at TO. I know Tavares doesn't help that any, but they were heading in that direction anyway.

And they still have needs on D.

That was my point though. Bringing in Tavares made them a contender but also made the window start to close faster. You need an influx of youth not pricey veterans. Nylander put the screws to them cause he knew they were in a win now mode and that will hasten the decline - unless they move a big name next year.

I want Skinner signed but if they overpay him, I suspect JBot will probably let Sam walk at the end of his bridge cause he'll need Dahlin and (hopefully) Mittlestadt money.

I think everyone in Philly available except Patrick, Hart and a couple of the young D.  The question will they go full on rebuild or will try to re-stock with some targeted trades.

Maybe that was the case before, but now that they think they've found their goalie it might not be the case. They'll still move their FA's but not Coutourier. No way.

I have never understood the obsession of holding onto late first rd picks or later round picks when you have the opportunity to obtain a player who has already worked their way up to the NHL?

One big reason is it's a cap league. To stay successful you need to have a constant influx of young underpaid rookie talent. If you don't, you end up in cap hell really really fast.

  3. I'm just going to say one thing.

Rule #1 of building a successful nhl team, you never trade away your first round picks. You avoid trading away any picks, but you never trade firsts.

Rule #1of building a dynasty , you try to acquire extra first and second round picks and you use them wisely.

A structure based on good scouting and a strong development program at all levels is the rest of the equation. That's it.

Pilut has been fantastic this year. He’s had a bunch of hand grenade moments, but his overall game has been excellent. He tilts the ice in the other direction whenever he is on

I'm guessing you missed the Vancouver game? :)

Needs a lot of work on the defensive side of his game if you ask me.

The need for a 2C doesn't magically disappear next season.  THAT transformation happens the following year when Mittelstadt finally (hopefully) is ready for the role.  There is no point in delaying the team's growth another year simply to keep ALL the bullets that MIGHT be available 4 years from now in the holster.  Do this right, & this new guy will be a useful part of the next 3+ years.  THAT is worth a small premium.

There aren't a lot of FA centers coming up that aren't over the hill or close to it. So you want to trade assets for one from a team that throws in the towel. Which magic fix do you have in mind that you can actually get without giving up first round picks or good assets that'll be missed in the near future?

  6. Chiarelli screwed up the cap in Boston with their cup runs and was fired because of that. He went to Edmonton and proceeded to place them in cap hell as well. I knew he was a dead man walking minute he signed Lucic to that 7 (?) year deal. Yes, they have McDavid, but I would say we are already positioned to move past them, but only if we sign Skinner to a reasonable deal. They have to blow it up I think and rebuild around their one superstar.

I’d trade SJ’s 1st or our 1st in 2020 plus 2 other assets for Couterier. He’d be awesome here.

I would too, but it ain't going to happen. Philly won't be moving him anywhere.

Hold on to those picks and draft wisely. Give JBot time to build his team and get rid of some contracts.

Posters here won't like this but the best thing (long term) the Sabres could do this year is finish low and get another quality player in the draft and don't let those picks play until they are ready is another thing some teams do with youngsters. Some players will have a lot of success in the NHL but it doesn't have to be the year or year after they are drafted.

Give JBot time to build his team and get rid of some contracts and I think the Sabres are contenders in 2-3 more years.

and that seems to be the plan, but if Skinner won't sign before the deadline what then? We get nothing for him we end the season worse than we were before. The entire thing forward hinges on that signing or non signing.

Sounds sensible. Only thing is some of us fans are getting up in age and two years becomes three and three becomes four. If I'm 20-60 yrs this is easier to accept.

Yup, fully agree, but also old enough to know it isn't going to be easy. Only way to move forward in a cap league is really good drafting and that is going to take time. Look at Toronto, after the money they gave Tavares and now wasted on Nylander, they are going to have a big issue with Marner and if they pay him big they got nothing left to pay a blueline. Tampa has to win now or lose part of that roster. The window closes really fast if you don't manage the cap.

So to get free agents to add to your roster you need to 1) build an organization that people want to come to   and 2) spend wisely on younger players and roles players who over achieve in a new system. The star power has to come from your draft. That takes as long as it takes and you hope your gm and scouts get it right or get lucky.

I like the style of game Phil tries to play,

I do too, but there's a problem at this stage. It's an offensive system based on attack and possession in the opponent's zone. Your best D in that game is a good O. In it, you will give up odd man rushes and some goals against. It's part of how that works. You don't win 1-0, you win 6-5. If you're going to play that sort of game, you have to score more simple as that. Higher shot totals are useless.

So the system might work, but not until there is more talent up front.

Given JBot's background, I think he will wait for that and not make a move back towards a more defensive game with a veteran coach or old school philosophy.

  9. Just a comment from the bleachers. I grew up loving football before hockey. I played high school football and was pretty good but too slow for a higher level. It was always my first sport. In recent years I have reluctantly slowly drifted away and lost interest, mostly because of the cheaters and the way, while it's not exactly fixed,  certain outcomes are, shall we say clearly favored.

New Orleans was the best team in football this year, they were royally screwed.

New England? Far from the best team in football, I didn't watch the game cause it's almost always the same bull. Watching a highlight replay of the roughing the passer call on Brady had me literally fall off the couch laughing. They aren't even trying to disguise it any more.

    I am SO over football.

Y'know, I like having Jack and Dahlin on the opposite half-walls, and I like Risto there to blast away from the point and Reino behind the net and Skinner below the dots for putbacks -- but for whatever reason the whole is less than the sum of the parts.

Big body in front of the net. Reinhart moves around the right areas but doesn't get the dirty job done. More of those Jack and Dahlin shots need to be better screened.

Aside from that, more motion and movement. What we do is kind of predictable. A better face off man wouldn't hurt either. When O'Reilly was on our PP we won a lot of attack zone draws and that sets you up right away.

    Is this a thing?

for me and my friends. like you say  tom-eh-toe I say tom-ah-toe but for those arguments/discussions when you feel it's the same in different words but if you go on about it you'll end up arguing for weeks over nothing. if that makes sense.

and if it doesn't, well never mind :)

He's important to the defense from a depth perspective, but I wouldn't say he's a "stud".

potato tomato, he's still our best D right now and he irritates opponents. we need that. He will be a fine #2 D man along with Dahlin as the future #1. You simply don't trade your best young players if you want to build a champion and overrated or not, he is still one of our best players.

The D right now is playing poorly but they aren't getting much help from the forwards in their own end either.

Yup, that's what I'm seeing too. The D is also being asked to attack and drive the rush all the time because the forwards suck and outside of the Eichel line generate zero offense on their own. Vast majority of our goals are the result of D driven plays. So with that in mind they are asking the D to do everything and all too often the forwards are not back checking well. Add to that both goalies need work on their rebound control. All too often pucks put right back out in front.

I'm fine with the improvements in the D and where it's going. The problem for me is still a pile of crap wingers.

  14. I want him signed, but I have to wonder why Carolina moved him for what they did. Makes me think they knew he wouldn't sign there and with the season he's had, the price must be even higher now. So I don't think there's any dilemna for JBot. You make him your BEST offer before the deadline and if he doesn't take it you have to move him for a solid return.

I dunno but I hope he isn't pulling a Tavares type move and secretly wants to play for his hometown or some team he loved growing up with what he sees as a cup future.

Dahlin over 25 minutes tonight with a +/- of 0.

There are moments when he just amazes me. he is going to be something really really special (and soon). Some of his passes tonight were so quick and crisp and he moved the puck up so well. Never forget he is just a kid. Be excited.

Pilut on the other hand was absolute rubbish tonight and basically cost us the game.

Okposo looks despondent. He point blank talked about the playoff situation. Hard not to like him personally.

Really liked the Larsson, Girgensens, Okposo combination. L & G have worked hard all year and that is pretty much our #2 line, not our #4.

Good effort and a game we win if Pilut is just average and maybe Ullmark plays a little better.

We get a lot of shots now but too many of them are easy cherry picking ones. We still need more traffic in front and more finish.

Maybe we don't make the playoffs. probably not, but it's still way more fun than last year and prior to the win streak did anyone actually think it was a one year fix?

JUST SIGN SKINNER and all is well. Guy had a little Marchand in him tonight. Dirty  but sneakier. I liked it.

I have an issue with how Botterill managed the centre ice position heading into the season, and his lack of action regarding replacing a player like Berglund in a timely matter. Not close to setting up a bunker for him though as I've liked much of what he has done so far. But he's no white knight.

I've dipped my toe into the Home Depot holding the materials for the Housley bunker, because to me he's the most responsible for the thing most easily fixed that potentially represents the biggest relative swing, that's at the same time most in our control: the Power Play.

I was on him for Dahlin playing on the right but he has appeared to change his mind on that now.

Is that JBot's fault or the fact that Reinhart and Girgensens (both drafted as future centres) can't play centre well?  His first draft he surprised us with a potential future centre (albeit struggling a bit now but I have hope) and he fixed the weakest part of the team (D).

Could anyone predict Berglund doing what he did? I think not.

Have faith, I am sure after signing Skinner, adding or drafting a centre will be top of his to do list.
