  1. Honestly, we are playing exactly the same now as we were during the 10 game win streak. The difference is a few good bounces (during the streak) and goaltending. Ullmark has been hot and cold and whatever mojo Hutton had going on then is totally gone now.  You do nto win at this time of the year without great goaltending, and ours is rubbish. That is NOT on Housley.

  2. The part of those articles you are conveniently ignoring is those RUMORS were all denied by management and other players. So your contention is believe the rumors, the fake news if you like, and everything the actual people say is clearly untrue. Fine, go that way if you want to even if the scenario that those were expensive long term contracts on the books going into what everyone knew was going to be a hard negotiation year (lockout occurred thereafter) makes more sense from a business point of view - and it is a business - but whatever. I mean really, if everyone was trading away every young guy that parties, there'd be no league.  There has to be much bigger problems than that to even think about dumping stars and it's always been that way.

  3. As long as we improve each year I will be happy. What would be disappointing is a rise and then a huge drop back like New Jersey. I didn't expect playoffs this year but I did expect improvement and we got that.

More importantly the team is faster and has a better attitude. Compete level way up. Attitude way more positive. Those are not little things. They bode well for the future and will create a culture where quitting and slacking won't be acceptable and that is a truly important thing.

If we don't sign Skinner and we don't sign some FA talent in the summer we will be in trouble, but I am willing to wait for that before passing judgement.

    I think Draisaitl is better.

I think so too, but he's really only had that one good playoff run to base it on. If he is still on the roster when we do make the playoffs I will be interested to see if Sam has a second level. Some players do, some don't. My gut tells me he won't, because my general issue with him is, while he does go to the front area of the net, he does not play tough and when things get physical he throws the puck away blindly or too quickly to avoid a pending hit or contact. Smart or scared? I guess that can be debated, but I know where I stand on it.

FWIW, my recollection on this jibes with jame's -- but neither of you have bothered to post any links in support of your factual assertions here.

Doesn't matter but, since you asked:

    https://thehockeywriters.com/5-years-later-richards-carter-trades/

    and more importantly:

    http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/flyers/20151117_Ex-Flyer_Mike_Richards__sudden__mysterious_fall.html

The latter being even more amusing since it contains a Tim Murray quote - lol.

Yes, he did party, like most young guys, but that was not the reason he was dealt. To quote:

Peter Luukko said the Flyers front office was unaware of Richards' problems when they traded the center to Los Angeles in 2011. Luukko, the Panthers' executive chairman, was Flyers' president at the time of the deal. "He never had any issues like that at all," Luukko said last month.

But like, whatever. ROR drove drunk into a Tim's, so I guess that's why he was traded - LOL.

Do you mean worst Sabres GM ever?

    Because I mean.. Chiarelli.

Yes, worst Sabres GM ever. There have been others in the league just as bad or maybe worse. Chiarelli is one. Holmgren was one. Jim Devallano was another one imo. Married the daughter if I remember correctly so never got fired and got bumped upstairs later. Everyone who worked for Harold Ballard. The list goes on and on, but for the Sabres, I give it to Murray hands down.

  7. Guess hoping for secondary scoring two games in a row was too much to hope for. Disappointing.

Hats off to Dallas' coaching. Relentless forecheck on our D (where most of our offense starts from) and shut down the top line, that is the strategy to beat this team cause the rest of the forward lines are not a threat. Good game plan and well executed. Sort of game where Housley has to make adjustments and consider a little juggling and moving the top guys around a little. No guarantee that'd work, but you have to try.

Ullmark played really well. Pity they couldn't get a goal or two for him.

I'm sorry, but you simply don't know what you're talking about.

There were 3 primary reasons that led to the Richards/Carter trade. It was about drinking/partying and it's impact on their relationship with Pronger, the rest of the lockerroom, and ultimately Laviolette. First, they openly rebuffed Laviolette's "dry island" policy, which led to the lockerroom turning to Pronger for leadership, which led Pronger and Laviolette to go to management/ownership and insist they had to be traded. This is all well documented, reported on, and you can dig in to the details yourself.

Philly didn't trade their captain and two star players because of Ilya Bryzgalov's contract... holy moly where'd you get that idea. They dumped the money on Bryzgalov right AFTER they trade Richards/Carter....

Yes, Murray failed. The only caveat I'll stick with in the Murray/Botts discussion is that Murray had the significantly more difficult job.

    You are one arrogant m*f*

    Prove your claim.

(fyi they cleared the money so that they could sign him)

Philly traded Carter and Richards to improve culture... the outcome was Carter and Richards went on to lead LA to cups, and Philly has been a disaster ever since.... Kane wasn't one of the two best players on Winnipeg... he played a 3rd line winger role when he was there... subtracting him didn't crater their lineup.

    Blatantly untrue.

Philly traded Richards because he had a long deal and they got into trouble after they dumped all the money on  Bryzgalov. It was financial issues, not culture issues.

As for Kane, he was drafted as the glory boy but played his way down the roster as he turned into a problem child. Winnipeg is where they are due to good trades and good drafting like Kyle Connor for example.

If JBot is a bad GM for you, Murray must have been what, Satan?   You want the definition of a bad GM that's your poster boy. Colin White would have looked pretty good in the blue and gold or better yet Brock Boeser or even Konecny. Trading away your roster for draft picks and then giving away those draft picks is the definition of a bad GM. Worst GM EVER.

  10. Can't believe some of you still question the ROR deal.

Is it not obvious that the attitude of the team has changed this year? JBot said he had to change the culture and he did what was needed for that. Argue all you want on that, but you can't disagree that it's changed this year. Kane, ROR, Lehner, all talented all gone, all EXTREMELY SELF CENTERED AND SELFISH PLAYERS. All have had attitude and off ice issues of varying degrees. Maybe Lehner looked in the mirror and saw the light when nobody wanted him but he quit on this team and had to go. Maybe Kane's been a good team guy in SJ, I haven't bothered to follow it, but they are loaded with talent and will likely not win again and St Louis is worse than they were. Go figure.

In one year, JBot took a dysfunctional mess with few prospects and has restructured it into a young rising team that is fun to watch and has a bright future. We have more prospects and extra picks. I'm not sure what some of you would need to say he's done a good job, but come on, no way can you say he's been "bad."

Now if he doesn't sign Skinner and he walks away for nothing I might change my mind, but right now I still think he's the best GM we've had since Punch.

  11. Well that was FUN to watch. I've said it before and I will keep saying it, regardless of how this ends up, it is simply more fun to watch the games this year then it has been for a long long time.

Good to see some secondary scoring. I like the E-Rod Casey Sheary combo. Speed, speed and speed. Clearly, this is the way we plan to go as we (hopefully) get more talent on the roster. Okposo with Larsson and Zemgus seems like the best 4th line option at the moment.

Also thought Hunwick played a solid reliable game and I'd keep him as #6 for now.

It's just fun to win, simple as that.

It seems to me today a head coach needs to be a cheerleader and not a teacher. Which is why I was a big fan of Spuddy. Everybody laughed at me for that until he took Vegas to the finals last year.

I'd agree with that and take it a step further. They have to be surrogate fathers for some of them, ego strokers for others, best friends with some, all kinds of things like that. If the players don't like them, they're toast.

  13. Ya "nothing" is an exaggeration. I think you know it was. My point is he is incapable (it seems) of leading a line when he is the most talented guy on it. is there a stat for how many times he passes the puck blindly when an opposing player gets near him (often turning it over, or like in the Blue Jackets game causing a scoring chance or goal against)? I'd like to see that stat.  Whereas a guy like Jack might sometimes hold the puck too long and try to do too much on his own, he will keep the puck and try to make the play and Skinner, well he seems to relish fighting through anything, but Reinhart, he just throws it away and heads to the net waiting for others to do all the harder work.

That's my opinion, and I'm sticking with it until i see otherwise.

As for Pommers away from Jack ya, he's been over the hill for years. Nostalgia aside, he was a contract dump and a place holder, we knew that going in. We are short on good wingers, no argument on that.

I am more impatient with Houlsey's approach. He is soft and a wimp.

Regardless of our weak coach, we shouldn't have expected playoffs this year. I didn't. Of course it's going to be unfortunate that we're going to be the second team in NHL history to have a 10 game winning streak and not make the playoffs.

I'm not going to judge JBotts just yet. But I have lost my patience with Housley and would love to have Q-Ville or Nolan behind the bench.

Nolan? wtf? Now that would be going back to an outdated and outmoded system for sure. I mean I liked Ted back in his day. I enjoyed May and Barnaby and Ray and all that red black and white lunchbucket stuff but man, none of that is going to work in today's nhl.

Also think Quenville is over rated (he had a LOT of talent to work with) but if he doesn't go to Philly I suspect he ends up in a long term deal with Seattle.

As for the soft wimp part, they said that about him when he played too, but he still made it to the hall of fame. It's a new era my friend. Even Torts isn't a hard man any more. These rich players just quit on that stuff. Housley isn't going anywhere unless we fail to make progress next year.

    Reinhart’s development path mirrors Schiefele’s.

And Reinhart is critical to Jack’s line being successful, because a successful line doesn’t just produce offense, they outproduce their matchup.

    last 1.5 seasons:

    eichel w/ reinhart

    GF60: 3.04 & GA60: 2.23

result, we win the matchup when Eichel/Reinhart are together (+0.81)

    eichel w/o Reinhart

    GF60 2.92 & GA60 3.30

we lose the matchup when eichel is away from Reinhart (-0.38)

Reinhart has proven to be an incredible asset in our transition game, his zone exit percentage is off the charts (elite) and he’s turned himself into a top end forechecker. His subtle and/or under appreciated skills generate more opportunities for our best scorers... and keeps the puck away from our opponents best players.

Reinhart is the type of player every team wants on their top line... a player who makes your best players even better.

I'm going to leave all the fancy stats for those guys in Toronto. I know what I see and I'm sticking to that. I mean we "won the match up" when Pomminstein was on Jack's wing too. Means nothing. Depends who you play, game conditions, etc etc etc. Way too many variables.

All I know for sure, is Reinhart does NOTHING when he isn't playing with Jack. Feel free to use stats to explain that if you like.

Lehner’s Qualifying Offer from the Sabres would have been 4 Million.

The Sabres had minimal interest in paying that.

McKenzie reported there was no interest from other teams to trade for him at last year’s deadline or leading up to July 1st.

So Botterill decided to move on.

Yes, which is why I said he'd obviously try to trade him first, but if there was no interest then I could see him moving on again. I'm honestly not sure many teams would be interested in offering much for Sam as his body of work away from Eichel is pretty poor. That idea of lost confidence last year is rubbish imo. He does not lead the play and cannot lead a line, from any position. We are so weak at wing he is the best option we have for the Eichel line, but no way is he in the same class as Eichel and Skinner and if we found a better player to take that spot you will see I'm right.

As for Lehner, given the way he's played this year I'm gonna guess Hextall sits at home wishing he'd made that deal that was talked about last year.

what? You think there is a plausible scenario where Botts let’s Reinhart walk for free because he didn’t draft him????

Yup, if he can't trade him and he signs a replacement FA. Easy.

Look, I get you don’t think much of Sam, and there is always the possibility of a player and a GM disagreeing on that player’s worth to his team. Players can always get traded for hockey reasons too. But Sam Reinhart is not Robin Lehner.

Would you - would anyone - be OK with Botterill not making a 3.6 million qualifying offer to a 25-year-old soon-to-be 70-point scorer? Do you not think there is a single GM out of 31 who wouldn’t offer at least a draft pick for such a player?

    Thats gross negligence and incompetence.

No, Sam is not Robin Lehner, just saying letting an RFA walk is not unheard of and that is just a recent example here.

Ok with a 3.6 million qualifying offer sure, but I doubt that's money he'd settle for. I'm talking about if his agent says we did the bridge and we proved our worth and we want a long term deal for bigger money, which is what I'd expect him to do. So in that scenario I can easily see JBot signing some other FA that he considers a better fit.

Scenario one would be signing Skinner and then adding a FA this year that ends up clicking with that line. Now Sam is bumped to Casey's wing or the third line, his numbers drop dramatically and suddenly everyone is questioning his worth. Could easily happen.

  19. 7 hours ago, dudacek said:

Sam is an RFA at the end of his bridge. He will not be walking.

And even if he is traded it won’t be for cap reasons.

    Lehner was an RFA too.

I could be wrong, but JBot just strikes me as a guy who will only want his own players and I'm not sure he thinks Sam is a "fit" for what he wants. Hence the bridge to buy time, but in the long run he will try to move him and if he can't he will let him go and pay the money Sam will want to someone else who he thinks "fits".

As for the rest of the cap issue I think you need to take a longer view and you have to anticipate two other things. 1) there will be other draft picks who will be good and will need money later and 2) he will sign free agents that are not on the roster now, so we can't be privy to that plan and how much future money he is planning to put aside for that.
