Any Simpsons fans here?
This whole situation reminds me of the monorail episode where Krueger is the smooth talking salesman, and we as fans are the town of Springfield that bought in hook, line, and sinker.

Given what we know about this team between the tank years and now, I think Dan Bylsma deserves a retroactive Jack Adams for putting up 81pts in the post tank year.

If Eichel was 2019-20 Eichel, we're in a playoff spot right now and everyone is loving Krueger.

It wouldn't be hard to find an unsigned free agent somewhere that would be better than Irwin.

They need line changes
Out - Eakin, KO, Sheahan, Mitts, Davidson, Irwin,
In - Skinnner, Quinn, R2, Dea, Borgen, Fitz.
Eakin, aka the Invisible Man, needs to watch a few from the press box. Lazar needs more 5v5 minutes. Move him up to the third and have him and Rieder play minutes against the oppositions FL1, like the GLO line did last season.
I'd keep Mitts in there.

Irwin because of injuries
Okposo has zero points this year, plays on a line which has been bad this year and gets PP and PK time.
I guess it’s Okposo’s Synergy
Was Borgen not available tonight?

Why the F do slugs like Irwin, Okposo, and Eakin get a nightly roster spot?
They'd rather not hurt a veterans feelings than win.

Remember in Hoosiers where Gene Hackman forced the team to pass the ball a bunch of times before they were allowed to shoot? And at first it didn't work, but eventually it paid off?
Is Ralph Gene Hackman? Will Ralph bring a tape measure on the ice in the Cup finals to prove to the team that Stanley Cup finals nets are just the same as regular season? 🤡

Eichel looks like he's at least trying tonight.
Joki looks like he might be at risk of losing a spot to Borgen. It won't happen mind you, but Borgen looks worthy of being our #6... Ahead of Joki and Irwin.

Brutal dump in from Thompson. Get off my team.
Thompson actually creates something when he's out there.

How?
1 The captain is too cool to try.
2 Shaky goaltending kills momentum.
3 A top F has been buried on the 4th line with no support
4 Coaches would rather trot out never-beens like Eakin, Irwin, and washed up guys like Slo-poso than play younger players with some potential upside like Mitts, Borgen, Routs, etc.

Final minute plus with extra attacker and no Eichel on the ice???? Who is coaching this team?
No shots on goal in the 3rd period. Second time in since 2011.
I'd staple jacks butt firmly on the bench if he wants to keep up that effort and body language.

I thought Dahlin gapped it okay, but could have prevented the shot by making a check prior to what was a weak shot.
My only question is if Dahlin commits to playing the man, and the opponent has a backup, it could backfire.

Joki trade.
Drafting Olofsson, Peterka, Cozens

Back in the enforcer days, I always thought if I was a legit player and some goon took any liberties with me, I'd drop the gloves and plan to throw the biggest haymaker I could and then turtle whether I hit or missed. I really don't think there'd be any shame in that since I was there to play hockey, he was just there to goon.
-
I still like watching the rare occasions when two legit hockey players drop the gloves out of pure emotion. I hope that stays in the game.
I hate watching two enforcers that can't play hockey dropping them in a preplanned manner. I'm glad that's gone from the game now.

Back on topic (sort of) how much training can the team do?
Risto and Hall excepted, can the players still skate at all? If Jack's poor play is more being out of shape than a bum shoulder, this could set the team back even worse, instead of helping as some had hoped.

Harrington tried to pwn me when I posted this very fact yesterday. I just got tired of responding.
In that 4-6 timeframe, there were a lot more Hutton starts we'd normally see. Where are we if Ullmark hadn't left for a family emergency?

I apologize if this has already been asked and answered, but does anyone know why Hall and Risto were singled out? I did find this online. I see Hall having the potential to maybe have met up with some old teammates and been penalized under clause (3). I'm not sure about Risto though. Hopefully both will be fine.

To be honest, I'm not usually a hater, and if I am hating, I'm usually attributing failure to the GM for not getting the right personnel or to the coach for poor motivation, tactics, usage, or matchups.
I got nothing against Matt Irwin the person. I'm not even mad that he had the stats he had previously and he was able to get paid to play in the NHL this season. My ire is that he was a known quantity in this league and we were the ones to give him ice time. It's a hard pill to swallow that we somehow didn't know better. And giving him ice time needs to stop.
Yeah, I was just messing with you since you laid it out so strongly. 😀

I agree Eichel looks checked out. At this point I'm hoping it's a case of him playing himself into shape... But he has this I'm too cool care Aura about him.
I recall seeing his Twitter posts where he looked somewhat large, though it was arguable that it was just the camera angle. Playing himself into shape is not an ideal thing to wish for, but at this point... I'd take it.

I know things didn't look great the last few games. But...
We're #4 in the division in goal differential, with a bunch of Hutton starts thrown in there.
With Linus breaking away as the number 1, and Hall, Eichel, and Skinner sure to up their output I really think we can get at least to number 4 in the standings.
We'll need to do something about the Slo-poso problem though.

Matt Irwin is bad at hockey.
When he was signed as a UFA, we were warned he was going to be bad. Real bad.
He was one of the 30 worst defenders in the NHL in Goals Above Replacement:
And we believed the analysis. His stats were going to be bad. Many were stunned that we signed him to a one-way contract. We didn't know what Kevyn Adams or Ralph Krueger saw in this guy.
We still don't.
Matt Irwin allows more shots per 60 minutes than any defender we have. He allows more High Danger Corsi Against per 60 minutes than any defender we have, a staggering 16.33 HDCA/60. Of all defenders that have played more than 30 minutes, this is 9th worst in the league. For reference, McCabe, Risto, Dahlin, Joker, Montour are all in the respectable 6.5-9 range; Miller is at 10.8.
The stats say he's real bad. The eye test looks worse.
Just in the 5-3 loss to NJ today, several goals were straight up his fault. Several exquisite NJ scoring chances were a result of him being out of position. He makes bad decisions on pinches and his legs can't bail him out of trouble. He gets beat hard. His accidental tripping penalty was a result of poor stick control (read: if he were more skilled, it wouldn't have happened). Watch this *****.
The opening goal 20 seconds into the game was his terrible read.

The go-ahead goal to make it 4-3 was a bad read leading to a worse pinch and terrible recovery in which he got close to being back in on the play, but then put himself out of position by diving for the puck. If he doesn't pinch, he covers the play. If he skates through until the end instead of diving, he takes away the rebound.

These goals aren't good bounces or good redirections and screens by NJD with some element of luck. Matt Irwin's bad play is making players like McLeod and Wood look like All-Stars.
I'm not surprised that Matt Irwin's stats said he was going to be bad and that his stats continue to be bad. I'm surprised that he looks so visibly and obviously bad in real time and he continues to get ice time.
Right now, Ralph Krueger has the luxury of choosing to not call up Matt Irwin. But down the stretch, injuries will happen, and Matt Irwin will be relied on to be top-six, and it will continue to cost the Buffalo Sabres dearly. They cannot expect to ice Matt Irwin and win hockey games.
I'm beginning to think you don't like Matt Irwin.
Ralph Krueger needs to go - like yesterday.

Michael Scott doesn't have the same way with words as Krueger. Most of us (not all) heard Krueger speak when he first came in and bought right in!
"You know, a town with money's a little like the mule with a spinning wheel. No one knows how he got it, and danged if he knows how to use it!"

“It was quite interesting. I’d sit beside Sabres fans and have conversations that I won’t be able to have with them now. But it was very enlightening. I certainly could feel the spirit of the city. I loved the history, the architecture and just the size. I can feel it’s a hard-working community, and it’s a place that my wife and I feel very comfortable coming to live there, but of course above all the environment that I’ll be working in will be a match to what I was looking for.”
