My 13 year old son pointed out that he can follow the games when Rick calls the games, but not when Dunleavy calls them. This with Rick well past his prime.

Where is this team with Tage Thompson and Casey Mittelstadt at regulars in the lineup since week 1? Not in the playoffs, but they'd be MUCH more respectable.
Oh well, maybe its for the best as Krueger is now out of here.

How bad did Hall look during the OT? How is he an MVP 2 years removed?

Do I think we’d beat Detroit sans Krueger in a 7 game series, both teams fully healthy?
Yes
I think we beat Ottawa and Anaheim too, pending Ullmark is in the lineup.

The Sabres aren't the worst team in the league this year, let alone all time.

Not sure how closely you have been paying attention, but the "if I need more money, I will dig another well" era of Pegual ownership ended at least 2 years ago.
The fracking business is down, covid is killing the NHL, and Pegula threw lots of money away in a very foolish manner during the first several years of his ownership.
It's more than obvious he has tightened things up financially.
Have you been to the building in the last few years? It's rather rundown and poorly kept up.
I was surprised to see that Pegula actually fired Ralph Krueger, knowing he'd have to eat the contract money. But then again, he didn't replace him with a real coach, did he? Not yet at least. Probably wants to avoid having to pay 2 HCs at least for this year, so he can simply eat the K for next year alone.
There is an entire thread dedicated to the financial tightness of Pegula over at HFboards on the Sabres page.
Go read it and enlighten yourself.
Gas and oil are on their way back up. Hopefully that will help pay off Kim's yacht.

I like how Granato said they ran a practice this morning. Hate to lose this way, but I think that kind of attitude will move things in the right direction.

What's the scoring percentage from shooting dat far out on a goalie playing the angle?
I remember he wasn't much further in than the top of the circle (though in the center, between the two). Is dat what you're seeing?

And he had separation.

All too often no forwards seem to have the awareness to cover for D men trapped or delayed on a rush
You also see a LOT of goals... Way too many... where the D have coverage, but no F3 pick up the 3rd attacker.
Since it's the two D standing around, they take the heat from us fans.
Yes, this scoring chance might even come as a result of a lost puck battle from the D... But puck battles are 50% and losing one shouldn't result in the puck landing at a guy wide open in the slot or far post for an easy goal.

I like watching him play, but I don’t think he’s worth the price of admission.
Keep in mind, the price of admission to watch the game on TV is for all intents and purposes free. I'll watch again tomorrow.

No. Which is why he is not worth the price of admission. He is a solid rookie who has a bright future. Not a player of the magnitude the original poster implied.
So you don't like watching his play? Your loss I guess.
-
I know some people say they don't like to watch the games, but for me, watching Cozens worth the price of admission alone.

That was not a generational play by Dahlin.

What was Risto so mad about?

I still say at the time Hall was a good roll of the dice for a year but now is the time to say saynora to Taylor.
Sadly he isn't worth anything right now. Could he land a 4th?

I'd say the low point was the New Jersey game, and not seeing Krueger get fired. Things are marginally higher... at least for now, since Krueger was let go.
That said, if things really hit the skids under Granato, we could yet sink lower. The hope of him pushing the team in practice, and dressing the players that deserve to be in the lineup is a minor boost vs last week.
-
Based on what we're heading, it sounds like poor practices is what Paul Hamilton is saying is costing this team. Apparently, Granato plans on shaking things up. I have my doubts that someone from the current regime will have much of an impact.

Like:
Cozens #1
Eichel... Though I was sour on him before, I'm now convinced that injuries have slowed him down this year, not effort.
Reinhart
Risto
McCabe
Olofsson
Thompson... If he gets a regular spot, he could be an effective 3rd line maybe 2nd line player
Mittelstadt... See above
Lazar... Love the effort! Wish everyone wore their heart in their sleeves like him.
Skinner... Give him a proper spot in the lineup.
Borgen
Bryson
Meh:
Ullmark
Reider
Miller
Joki... Was a like, this year brought him down.
Sheahan
Dislike:
Okposo... Not as a person, just on the ice.
Hutton
Eakin
Irwin
Hall... He's useless.
Staal... See above.
Montour... High skill, zero IQ

My point was if the CBA allowed it, they should be practicing on days off.

They are playing an extraordinary amount of games on a short period of time. There’s just simply not time for it.
Again, as someone that's done 2 or 3's a day 6 days a week, you can practice hard every off day, and have a light skate on game day. The light work actually helps with recovery.

Do the game schedule there’s virtually no practices this year.
Is that a rule, or is that a decision made by the team that they're better off resting?
I used to compete in rowing... I never quite made the national team, but I was in the system. We trained 2 and 3 times a day, and went a lot harder than what hockey players do. Sure we'd rest a bit before key races, but if we rested every other day, we'd never get better.

Is it possible that the Sabres either practice with less frequency or less intensity than other teams?
Anecdotally it seems like you hear Ralph talking a lot about rest days.
Visually, they just don't seem sharp, in that they don't execute on the little things (missing point blank opportunities, hitting posts, passing just a little off, etc).
When you look at almost the entire roster playing below their career norms, lack of practice could be the prime reason.
I could just see Ralph playing the nice guy card and taking the easy route over and over just to keep a positive attitude in the room. Also, I could see some of Terry's nouveau conditioning pros taking on a less is more attitude you hear about these days (kind of like my kids' "new" math!).
I'm not saying he needs to bag skate them as punishment old school style... But he could still make sure they're working hard on a consistent basis, keeping the skills sharp at game speed, and just teaching overall work ethic. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think he's just not pushing them hard enough.

I posted in another thread, that they should be able to play every other day, and the odd day back to back, plus practice every day at a decently high tempo.
As a former rower that spent time in the national team system (but never made it), training 2-3 times a day 6 days a week is the norm if you expect to win.
The work that goes into playing a game with 15-20 TOI, wouldn't be that hard to recover from physically for a world class athlete if they're in decent shape.
Maybe mentally, or from a bumps and bruises perspective they might want more rest. Still, I say push them hard and see what they're capable of.
