Who said predetermined?  You are making a counterpoint to a point that was not made.  If the original point does not exist, then your counterpoint is, by virtue, also non-existent.. therefore your comment is pointless.

    This is what you said:

“The team has to be damn sure the player can contribute and contribute for a full 82 game + playoff season.  Benson looks good now, but what does he look like in February after the grind of the NHL?”

Sending Benson down because he’s a rookie and likely won’t be able to endure the grind of the NHL is sending him down for a reason that was apparent before he even walked into preseason. Basically nothing he would do in preseason would change his age and status in the NHL. That’s sending him down due to a predermined reason.

You also bring up the point of sending them down due to “roster flexibility”. This is another issue that was apparent well before preseason. It’s not new.

So, you brought up 2 reasons to send Benson down that have nothing to with his ability. These were concerns well before preseason started, so if KA or Donnie are going to use these reasons to send him down, why even have such players compete in preseason? Sorry, try again.

It's never about just the talent of the players that can be in the lineup.

This is one aspect that has to be taken into account.  Until a team is a near absolute lock to challenge for the Cup (not just make the playoffs) a good GM isn't planning to win this year at the expense of any future years.  Burning contracts reduces roster flexibility.

And roster flexibility is the real key to all of this. If the situation was like the AHL then it would be a no brainer. But it's not and that will more than likely lead the team to send both Benson and Savoie back to Wenatchee.  Simply put, if either of them are kept past 9 games then there is no other spot for them. If they struggle, the team is handcuffed on what they can do. No ability to trade for someone and send the struggling player to the AHL.

The team has to be damn sure the player can contribute and contribute for a full 82 game + playoff season.  Benson looks good now, but what does he look like in February after the grind of the NHL?

I just don't see a team with the stated goal of making the playoffs limiting its ability to move proven NHL roster pieces around.

And I think Benson is fantastic, I think if he could be sent down to the AHL then I would put him on this roster until Quinn returns or he begins to struggle. I love how he sees the ice and anticipates the play. But.. the business wins in the end.

What kind of message would this send to players battling for a roster spot during preseason? If it was predetermined to send Benson back to the WHL, was this made clear to him prior to preseason? And to insert a guy like Rousek or Biro who were clearly outplayed?

He probably gets the JJP/Quinn Treatment, play some games and watches some with the coaches in the press box and by game 15 for the team, they have an idea on what his future brings

Which makes me think, what’s more valuable to his development: 40 NHL games or a whole season in the CHL? My guess is the NHL. WHL plays 68 games not including playoffs.

Very under the radar, but according to ESPN, Artem Kriukov is still on the roster.   In his 40’s now, but still has a little left in the tank.  Missing piece to ending the playoff drought?

This is obvious a Russian spy Putin has placed on the Sabres to see exactly how Kevyn Adams has amassed so much talent. But, seriously, I had a Who? moment. A guy we drafted 15OA in 2000 who never left Russia.

My guess is that reflection would be, 'we won two Stanley Cups the last four seasons.' And the reflection would end there.

The past is the past. Are you suggesting they should hand out the same contracts they have over the last 6-7 years because they’ll likely win another 2 Cups in the next 4 years?

  6. Tampa needs to reflect on how they got into their current cap situation. I would give him a reasonable extension, but no way would I be giving him the obligatory NTC that they usually give out to all their players. Extend him with a tradable contract. Otherwise, he can go elsewhere, which I bet he would be loath to do.

Seems like a prelude to selling the Sabres.  No reason to dissolved PSE unless that's the goal.  And of the two teams, there's no chance in hell he's selling the Bills, which are uber-profitable, unlike the Sabres.  Although the timing seems odd since the Sabres should finally make their return to the post-season this year.

I have to think PSE was set up for one reason and one alone: money. I would love to have to know the tax implications of forming PSE and the implications of him dissolving it.

Well, it's hard to say exactly, but I'd guess the general meaning is morally compromised in a profound way.  I doubt we'll get details on any specific bad acts.

FWIW, this isn't some twitter rando -- my understanding is that he's been a writer for the main newspaper in Winnipeg for 20+ years.

They didn’t necessarily have to commit actual crimes. Many criminals possess anti-social personality traits, but not everyone with such traits actually go on to commit a crime. Some people can control their impulses better, but this doesn’t automatically make them good people. It sounds like by hanging around the locker room, he met such personalities. We’ve all met such people in our lives at one point.

I'm more angry now that Quinn is injured. He's gonna be better than several of the guys listed ahead of him.

It’s likely he knocked him down a few notches because of the injury. Not Quinn’s fault, but we’ll now see some of those other players get a chance to play catch up.

Adams should arrange to meet Dahlin somewhere of Rasmus choosing.

Sign and have a little presser wherever that is, beach, golf course, his family home etc.

It would’ve been great if while Dahlin was sitting on the throne, Princess Fiona wipped out a contract and a pen.

Do you think it is a potential downside if Kevyn consistently signs players to "team friendly" contracts?  On the one hand, he's better able to keep the team together, but on the other, at some point these players (and the NHLPA) will start to say he's undervaluing assets and get NHLPA action against him or just kind of start feel like they're Kevyn's patsies and become discontented.

    Thoughts?

I believe Tampa did this for years. I don’t think it hurt them.
