  1. Did anyone think the Isles would end up with more first rounders than the Sabres today?

Do the Leafs realize if they want to emulate the Patriots by trading down for more picks, they need to win first.

    The quote of the combine

@HackswithHaggs: Colin White said his favorite part of the NHL combine week was going to a concert and "meeting some Buffalo girls." Best answer all day

McGahee and White must have different taste in women

  2. Enroth's numbers last year are about on par with Lehner's (way better in terms of GAA when he went to Dallas) and Neuvirth's numbers last year in Buffalo were way better.  It's not like this is an upgrade.

There's also no explanation for why we suddenly had a goaltending crisis.  We were in 30th place last year.  The team has plenty of holes to fill and they're all more important than goalie.  If we were a contending team and goaltender was the last piece of the puzzle, I'd understand overpaying for a really good one.  But we're a 30th place team and we just overpaid for the same level of goaltending we already had.

It's not about next season though. If Lehner amounts to what he projects to be, he'll easily be better than any option we have now. We're building a contender, a young goalie with high upside is much more valuable than a 30 year old goaltender who won't even be on the team when we're contending.

  3. The ROR thread has pages of discussion and breakdown.

    http://forums.sabrespace.com/topic/23375-the-ryan-oreilly-super-thread-2015/?p=693269

I've followed the thread and none of it said to me he was poor or even anything less than above average defensively. In fact, I'd go as far to say that his stats, though appearing less than stellar, show how good he is defensively. Colorado has been awful on defense since at least 2013, and the fact that he's more or less scratch, is impressive. Zemgus, who is supposed to be our two-way guy, has terrible corsi and fenwick, yet he isn't labeled as poor on defense.

As far as FO is concerned, if you take out his age 18 season, his % goes up nearly an entire point. This last season he had a career high in winning percentage while also starting more shifts in his own zone than any other season so far. 53.5 FO% while short handed, 56% on the powerplay.

Taking stats at face value can be useful, but I think you're trying to make an argument that shouldn't be made. As it was said earlier, he finished 12th in Selke. He'd instantly be our #1 penalty killer, top PP center, and best two way forward.

  4. We broke down his defensive zone starts and corsi and he was very average.

What thread? I'm no fancy stat expert, but from what I can tell he's solid in his own end. I am seeing what you mean by his C/60 and F/60 being negative the last two seasons, but how much of that has to do with the Avs poor defense?

  5. He's holding it together superbly now, but what are the odds that Liger's meltdown when Murray overpays for O'Reilly rivals this Lindy masterpiece:

It's too bad we never won a cup with Lindy. Maybe it's because he's more or less the only coach I've known during my lifetime, but I always loved the guy.

Actually what I will find fun is how letdown people are by ROR after he plays 10 or 20 games.  As for my reaction, if he trades Zemgus or Risto... well we will cross that bridge if we come to it.

The allure of ROR, to me at least, is his defensive game. The fact that he can put up points is a bonus. If he's utilized heavily in the d zone, I could see a lot of casual fans complaining about him the second any piece in the deal starts to produce. Unless he suddenly becomes a shell of the player he is in his own zone, I'm not sure how he could disappoint (at least not to the people on the board. WGR and their callers on the other hand...)

The Sabres received permission to talk with Rangers goalie Cam Talbot to see if he'd be open to coming to Buffalo, says @FriedgeHNIC

I'm not sure I like this. Unless the price has greatly dropped, I'll be disappointed.

  6. Zacha slipping to 21...wow talk about perfect situation, make this draft happen.  Eichel and Zacha!

That would definitely make for an exciting first round. I loved watched Zacha play in the playoffs, he plays really hard and chippy. Though he is no where near the caliber of Ovi, his style of play (banging bodies, 1000 MPH) is similar.

Again just keep in mind any team that misses the top playoffs next year could draft 1, 2, or 3 due to the new draft lottery.

Have they released next drafts odds yet? How steep is the drop off from the top three (Chychrun/Matthews/Puljujärvi) to number four? Lastly, would we really want to draft a player with possibly the toughest last name to spell in hockey?

Something that doesn't happen often that Buffalo should consider - trade next year's pick with a top 3 protection on it. Essentially the Avs get the next pick we have that isn't top 3 (post lottery).

By next pick, do you mean 2017 first? If I'm Colorado, I would want extra compensation if they ended up losing a top 3 pick.

  7. I wonder what the Avs would think of rolling the dice on #21 plus next year's first, with the 2016 conditional on O'Reilly signing. I'd add a third, or a lesser prospect like Cornel or Florentino if that's what it took.

With a young core of Kane, O'Reilly, Eichel, Reinhart, Girgs, Risto, Bogo, Zads and Pysyk, plus a healthy stable of prospects, I'm willing to sacrifice a shot at next year's Strome or Werenski.

I'm not in the win now mode, but moving next year's first to retain some of our other prospects seems really smart to me. As great as Matthews may be, we know what we would have in ROR
