The only chance is #1 overall? 6 of the top 20 point scorers in the NHL as of today were taken 1st overall. So it hardly seems like the only way. Most are first round guys though.
To be fair, there's a good amount of players on that list that are only on their because one of those 6 #1 overall picks: Kunitz, Backstrom, Okposo, etc.
Though there are certainly other guys that weren't number 1 overalls and still on that list entirely on their own merit: Perry, Getzlaf, Karlsson (which is incredible), etc.
So I do agree with you, it may seem like the most likely way but it is hardly the only way.

Is it really that hard to google this stuff? Sam Reinhart is Captain and Center for the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League or WHL. He does not play in the Q.
The WHL may be a small step below the OHL in terms of how defense plays but it isn't the no defense of the Q and it has some really strong teams.
Well, I was out drinking and I just briefly checked my phone so yeah, it wasn't the most convenient option, sorry. I was referring to Mackinnon's career in the Q, not Reinhart's, who I mistook for playing in the OHL.
Back to the conversation, so Reinhart's absurd stretch after the break, in a stronger league than Mackinnon's Q, at least defensively, should bode pretty well for us.
Reinhart's last year (current season) in the WHL: 34 G, 59 A, 93 PTS in 51 GP
MacKinnon's final year in the QMJHL: 32 G, 43 A, 75 PTS in 44 GP.
I'm not saying he's better than MacKinnon, but if the WHL is more solid defensively than the Q and Reinhart's putting up these kind of numbers, we should have a pretty solid pick, if this is the way we go.
Also, I'm not sure of the line combinations, but it doesn't seem like Reinhart plays with anyone comparable to the player in Druin that MacKinnon got to. The top three leaders in points on the Kootenay Ice roster are centers, and the first winger listed is Tim Bozon, drafter by the Canadians in 2012.

Different leagues from the two.
Is the Q better/worse then the OHL?

You can take all the shots you want. The Sabres don't have anything that would make Colorado give up Duchene.
I don't know much about their farm team, but other than him, and maybe O'Reily, there's nobody else that would really interest me. I agree with you, I highly doubt they'd give him up, him or Mackinnon, but out of the two I feel like Duchene is more plausible, and so he's who I'd go for.
If Landeskog wasn't a Captain, and they weren't in contention, I'd go for him as the most viable option
-
There better had be a really freaking skilled skater coming this way. I don't even want to hear about draft picks unless there's a Stastny or something.
I'd ask for more than him. With all the fire power they have, I'd take a shot at Duchene.
-
And let's face it. Every single one of the guys we are talking about are not going to wind up as top pair defensmen. We need to break from the thought around here that every single Sabre prospect is the second coming.
I'm not denying that, but when your d-men prospects heavily outweigh your forward prospects, you need to draft a forward. Unless TM lands a few offensive prospects at the deadline, I take Reinhart,.
-
The one thing I forgot to mention earlier is that drafting Ekblad also opens the door to moving one of these other guys for talent up front at some point. There are plenty of options for this team if they believe he is the best player available to them.
This would be the only reason I'd take Ekblad. You can have as many norris-caliber d-men you want, but without the offense to hold some sort of zone pressure and a good goalie come playoff time, that's not going to mean anything. As it's been said, there's only six of them, and only two of them on the ice at once, they can only do so much. I agree that those teams have had two elite/top d-men, but they didn't roll out 6 of them, and they had the offense to compliment them.
IMO, I just don't feel like becoming the next Predators

Wayne Scanlan, a reporter for the Ottawa Citizen.
Is he reputable?
Also, does this indicate a move towards Ottawa/is he specifically a Senators writer or an NHL source?

Dang, that little bitch
this isn't censored, but asshat is?
Nope nevermind, guess neither are.
Look out Stafford, the dictionary for you just got a little bigger

useless turnover at the point on the pp by Leino

I hate Boston's hockey team, Boston's baseball team, Boston's football team.
agreed. Good news is, I'm almost positive we've already lived through the worst stretch in Boston-Hating-History so it can only get better from here. (5 Patriot SB (3 wins , @2 Bruins Cups (1 Win), 3 Red Sox WS titles, and 1 Celtics title.) That's an absurd stretch for one city

Anyone know who was on the ice for that Lucic hit?
Madest thou look!
Gets me every time I watch it

This game just got a whole lot more interesting

That was the best thing I've seen all season  :clapping: :clapping:

Malcolm Subban a promising but unproven prospect goalie for a proven top 4 puck mover in Erhoff?
I don't think that starts a conversation if those are the principal pieces.
Fair enough, I agree with that. The general consensus seems to be that we could just get him in the second round with our picks, and that Ehroff could be moved for a better deal. I agree Subban for Ehroff, as the principal pieces, is bad for us, but I'm sure the Bruins could throw more in for him
-
Stafford's leading the Sabre's in ice-time offensively, coming in at number two for forwards is Moulson.
Let the shopping begin!!!
-
Nobody said anything about getting just Subban, but keys also not overvalue our own players (which is understandably hard to do).
Teams don't trade top prospects often.
I wouldn't do that.
I suppose I'm confused, can you elaborate, Benedict?
-
Because Ehrhoff is a first-pairing defenceman on a long term deal with a low cap hit.
They aren't that easy to come by.
We can get a Malcolm Subban with one of our second rounders.
I could be wrong, and correct me if I am, but last I heard the Bruins weren't keen on shopping Subban last year, I doubt they ship him for 2nd round picks; he's, from what I've gathered, I highly touted goalie prospect, something we don't have (minus Ulmark).
Sorry, I missed your comment that you'd only do it for "bigger fish," not straight up. Do you not want Subban at all our are you referring to a bigger package from the Bruins?
-
I wouldn't do that.
How come?

Story out of Long Island is that no surgery for Tavares but will be out for at least 8-10weeks.
So if he's set to go for the full season next year, which this sounds like he is, would that mean Snow doesn't forfeit the 2014 season i.e. keeps the 2014 top 5 draft pick and attempts to win next year?
-
There's a report that Spencerport native and Senators prospect Shane Prince may go to the KHL if he's not moved. He grew up a huge Sabres fan and I've been saying id love to have him in Buffalo.
Why would he do that?
-
Sounds like Ott would be interested in resigning with the Sabres this summer if he is traded.
I saw that, was pretty interesting IMO. It'd be a win-win to trade him for some assets and then get him back in the summer, but I'm not sure if teams knowing that's a possibility will diminish his value. Don't get me wrong, Ott's the quintessential rental player for a playoff run, but I'd assume this hurts his value a little bit.
OFFICIAL: Ryan Miller, Steve Ott to St. Louis for Chris Stewart, Halak, Carrier and two picks

Same here. Stewart isn't bad, and we knew Halak was coming, but the prospect is a bit disappointing, and you know that 2015 1st is going to land somewhere in the 20th+ range, if not 25th+
