It'd be pretty wild if getting pucks to Olofsson in that spot on the power play (1st goal) is a repeatable thing. We haven't seen a player post up there in years. If it works, I won't even complain about Skinner on the half wall ? -
Congrats to Duke Williams for his first ever NFL start. What a path that man has taken to get to this point. He deserves this.

I guess it's pouring there, so that's probably why. Hopefully he's 100% after the bye.

Dammit, Singletary is inactive.

No Cameron Wake today for Tennessee. This is going to be a tough game. I'm sure they're going to blitz us because of how effective it made NE against Allen. Their safety, I forget his name, is elite. A stifling defense in general. Mariota is the only QB to start all 4 games and not turn the ball over, and their offensive weapons like Walker, Brown, their new WR, and the RB whose names I'm forgetting, are dangerous. But the Titans are one of those teams that you never know who you're going to get - they can beat good teams handily and then lose to last year's Bills. 4-1 would be so, so sweet. Go get it Bills!

Proof that misery of a genuine Sabres fan should never be construed as wanting them to fail. We all want the same thing here, friends -
He also scored two goals in a November game in Montreal last year while playing with Reinhart. If that didn't override everything else for people who look at the whole picture and conclude that his offensive game was dreadful last year, why would these two scoreless games? We don't claim that Sobotka is incapable of skating in a straight line while Johansson and Skinner score a goal. I understand the desire to rub things in early, we all feel it for any of the things that work out the way we thought they would, but like I said elsewhere, chaining your own established beliefs to what happens one game at a time is a great way to twist yourself into logical knots within weeks. That's why I stuck to my ROR trade guns while we were in first and they were in last (which was exponentially more difficult to do than being skeptical of Vlad through two scoreless games in the top six). Sticking to your core principles for what makes teams and players good versus bad is in general a good idea. And if Sobotka has truly changed, then it will show up in the things that made his game so worrisome, and then there won't even be any disagreement. Nobody is married to the view that Sobotka will always suck - they're married to what is evident to them when watching games, which is that for two straight years, he was a ridiculously problematic offensive player. If Sobotka changes the things that were problematic, views will shift accordingly. Sobotka has been fine off the puck through two games, and doesn't have any flagrant giveaways or anything like that, but he hasn't shown to have changed the thing that over long periods of time turned his offensive numbers into the worst in the league. For example, the drive to the net early in the first was good in that he saw space and took it, and yet, from 6 inches in front of the goalie, failed to get the puck even on net. It went wide. Another gorgeous transition kicked off by Johansson that should have been dangerous fluttered harmlessly into the netting, later in the period, off of his stick from the high slot. He wasn't a part of any of the seriously dangerous chances those guys had in either game (and I don't know that they had any in Pittsburgh). Things won't go as perfectly as these games have forever, and when they don't, it's going to be obvious that we need the other piece on our second best offensive line to be more capable of making things happen with a puck, and that will be okay. If Sobotka deserves it, Krueger will have another spot for him ready when the time comes.

If your default is skeptical, you miiiight want to tack another month on that timeline :P

It's definitely their weak point, and it's not trivial for ANY team to stay good, they've just given me confidence through their management to this point. What helps their weakness is how strong ALL their forwards are at a two way game. But they will need to add a couple good D over the next couple years.

An arena getting that loud after a goalie getting run, standing up like they did for those hits. And a tic-tac-toe Sabres team. -

Two points in the bank are, as always, a sweet treat. On the standings sheet, they're always the same. When the whole entertainment angle of the sport is factored in, they're rarely the same. This was one of the special ones that don't happen all that often. A home blowout on Pominville day was probably the last one. Maybe Skinner to clinch the 10th win a few weeks after that. Jack and Sam are ready to be one of THOSE NHL duos. Victor is the perfect complement. And Skinner will not be left out if Johansson continues to bring that neutral zone game. Mitts, Sheary, Vesey were quiet, but sound, and the "guts" guys in 17/22/28/21 did their jobs well. I thought the active sticks of the third line were incredibly disruptive in all zones. Both on the power play and at ES there is a lot of horizontal movement with the puck, and it opens things up a lot. They're just starting to do this largely for the first time, so they're only going to get better at picking their spots. That's the kind of thing that fixes the kind of thing we SUCKED at the last few years. Sometimes Jack, Sam, and Victor are playing hot potato! Ralph will tell them to get selfish once in a while, because they can all beat goalies with their shots. The defensemen are otherworldly in transition. SO many breakaways and 2 on 1s that Rick's voice inflection was nonexistent in calling them by the third period. Just another 2 on 1. What do you do when Montour gets healthy? Obviously, things won't be perfect anymore by then, so the answer will likely become clear. But right now, the pairs are humming so well. Risto McCabe was an underrated duo last season, and they're phenomenal this year. Their physical engagement is a gift to an old-school fan, and is useful in this modern NHL the way they're doing it. Scandella-Joki are like Risto-Pilut last year, for the same reasons. Colin Miller was smart and steady for Dahlin, who just went off today. The entire shift before Kyle's goal was something that I've only ever seen Erik Karlsson do in the NHL, and I'm serious. He broke 3 Devils' ankles in 30 seconds, and then created the goal. Hutton with some big saves at important times that gave the team confidence to bounce back after goals against. These were the kinds of games that the offseason Krueger optimism hoped dearly for. They're the kind of games that put butterflies in my stomach, imagining what it would be like to do a project on why we're so GOOD.They are just two games, but they are good signs. And they make me ready for the next one! -
