?  Their 5 on 5 offense is identical and Byram doesn't get PP time.  Power's 1 extra goal is on the PP.

By the way Byram is +6 while Power is -11.  We can sign Byram long-term for 7 million.  What do we need Power for if trading him can fix holes in the roster?

The one thing we can't do is investment nearly 27 million in 3 offensive LHD.  It's a luxury we can no longer afford.

You literally said, Byram had more offense than Power. It was literally not true. You had no qualifiers so don't start responding to me with them after the fact. I am well aware of the statistics. If you want to talk about their overall contribution to the team that's different, but I won't know that unless you say it.

Your speculation on the cost to retain Byram is interesting. Do you not think Byram is sitting there saying to himself, "Hey, I have a higher +/- and nearly as many points as this other guy. I am on your top pair. How am I not worth $8M?"

Byram's agent enters the arbitration room. When asked for his justification he says two words "Owen Power" drops his mic and walks out.

I don't know what we need Power for, I did not make a case to keep him. All I said is that if your justification for trading Owen Power is that he's not a big, physical defenseman then you are using the wrong metrics.  You keep repeating the $27M statement as if somehow saying it over and over again will be relevant to my response. It won't be. I am also not arguing that point.

If Power or Byram is traded then they better bring back something that can fix the offense. A big, physical defenseman can be obtained for far less or even as part of the deal.

Of course the coaching staff is the worst problem this team has, so I don't think bringing any player in here is going to change things.

By silencing critical health agencies and threatening to eliminate FEMA, this administration is a threat to the health and safety of the American people; a clear and present danger to the citizenry. And we are only five days in.

I'm not sure i have a problem with dissolving FEMA.  Is it really not a situation that states can handle themselves? I don't usually hear positive stories about FEMA involvement anyway.

The money that funds FEMA comes from the entirety of the United States, yet certain geographic regions are more prone to disasters that require FEMA assistance. It seems that if people want to live in states that experience greater amounts of disasters the state itself should take care of its citizens and the cost of living in those areas should reflect that.

This is very different than blocking national health initiatives. FEMA is an emergency response team.  There's plenty of emergency response in this country that has nothing to do with the federal government. The states have national guard which is often used as well.  Utility companies send workers across multiple states to help recovery.

Also, people need to learn how to protect themselves. Far too many people look to the government. If a nationwide large scale disaster hits FEMA will be useless and those sitting around waiting for help will end up dead.  Interrupt the supply chain nationwide for 5 days and see what FEMA does to alleviate that.

I’d add 8.35 for Power.  That’s 15 mill (or nearly 20% of the cap) for terrible defensive play.

I also don’t know why Power is a sacred cow for people here.  Who cares if he was a 1st overall pick if he doesn’t pull his weight.  He doesn’t give more offense than Byram, he isn’t physical despite his size, is terrible in D zone coverage and isn’t fast enough to fix his mistakes.  He certainly isn’t giving us $4 mill worth of value much less 8.35.   If we can get him off the books we free up his cap to find guys who actually play defense.

    Owen Power: 6G, 18A

    Bowen Byram: 5G 18A

it's not really a debatable point.

Bowen Byram is nearly 18 months older than Power as well. This still makes a difference.

Owen Power sacred? No. But I'm not going to unfairly judge him either.  He's not worth his contract now, but his contract wasn't signed for now.

If you move on from Byram.  We really don’t have the money to pay for all 3 of Dahlin, Power and Byram.  Sinking 27 million in 3 offensive D would be terrible cap management.

This team has been nothing but a cap management mistake. I'm not worried about it. Like I said, I'm not against trading Power, but it's not because he's not a big, physical defenseman.

He gets the best contract offer from Buffalo.

So he wants money over winning?  It's possible and if so it's likely a 1 year deal so he can be moved at the trade deadline.

With every day that goes by, I fear the opposite.

The team has shown very little that makes me think they don't think/want him as a big part of the future. He's 4th among forwards in ice time. Hes a fixture on either the 2nd or the first team PowerPlay. When tage got hurt and couldn't take faceoffs/play center, Cozens was promoted to first line center.

I will be shocked (and delighted) if he isn't here next year.

I think they are moving Cozens all over to try and get something to click. I don't think it hurts his value as I think other GMs see this roster and the team success and blames a lot of it on the management, not the players themselves.

Owen Power has never played like this bolded part. Not in college and never in the NHL. It's not who he is.

Right. It's like expecting LGR4GM to not engage in debate on topics. It's not going to happen. (I do not mean that as an insult in any way).

    14 hours ago, GASabresIUFAN said:

Which is why we need to trade him.

Power has a lot of room to improve on defensive play, but he is a 22  year old player who is in the top 30 for defensive scoring.  I'm not opposed to trading him but it's not because there is a need for a big, physical player.  They can get one of those AND keep Power.

I don't think yo uare getting Rantanen.  Even if he doesn't sign with Colorado, I think a lot of other teams will be willing to pay up for him that will be more appealing for me.

The rest of what you said, it still is mind boggling to me why Cozens is still here. He's a bad hockey player overall.  2 years ago he was an overall bad hockey player who had a career scoring year of 31 goals, and now he is reverting to the norm of being a bad hockey player overall again.  As far as Bryam and Power....I go back and forth. What is Bryam's willingness to sign here and for how much?  Whether to trade one of them to me depends on that.

He was here because they waited to see what would happen. We already know the Sabres had a trade to move him out and it was ultimately killed by Detroit. I think it's safe to say that early on they identified that Cozens hasn't improved (or doesn't want to be here) and are trying to move him.  He might still be moved in season but as it approaches trade deadline Cozens is not the player that playoff teams want to add right now.  He's more likely an off season trade at this point.

No coach is going to change these tiger stripes. They are who they are.  A woefully flawed group who wilt at the first sign of pressure.  They don’t work hard enough on the ice to produce regular wins.  They say all the right things but rarely do them.

The only thing that keeps me from getting to this point is that we continue to talk about players who are better when they leave Buffalo. This is why I keep focusing on the coach, GM, and most importantly the owner.

Ok, so this is weird..... i was watching the game and shut it off and fell asleep after the end of the 2nd. I dreamt that we lost 5-2. That also included the empty netter.... So the real bad news is that i dreamt the Bills lose and Mahomes gets beat in the SB. 😵

If the Bills are to lose, then the second part of your dream is the only acceptable outcome.

I have no real words for this game overall. it's more of the same. So, I can't be upset because if I thought they would be different, that's on me.

Don’t care. He knew it was broken and couldn’t let JohnC know?! Why, because it’s not his job? Whatever happened to just being a decent human just cause it’s the right thing to do? And he can’t put a sign on it now that says it’s broken? ***** that guy John was right.

Point of parliamentary procedure. I did not read that the guy ever knew the machine was not working. I also did not read that the guy did not go and put a sign on it afterward.

We are also assuming that in the gas station the person working inside is in a good position to leave the register area and the inside of the store unattended.

Lots of assumptions being made for someone whose job is to sell what the gas station sells, not care for that which it does not.

And as a person who worked at a gas station and had a shotgun put into his chest I can confirm that the fear of an irate customer or being robbed at gunpoint is a very real thing. I was concerned about it before it happened and I quit working there after it happened.

I am not a drinker but I had a shot of whiskey once. Don't ask me what kind. But I had driven pretty much straight through to Florida for xmas some years ago. After hours on I95 with crashes and backups every 10-15 minutes, when I finally reached my destination I jokingly asked for some booze. I really liked it. I liked it so much I decided I better make that my last, and I haven't had one since. I'd be a good alcoholic. I read something once about how people with sweet tooths are at greater risk of alcoholism.

I'll be the exception to the rule. It's not that I hate sweets.. but I can live without them.  That said, I can see how it could play into things for people.

  8. I have no doubt he's aware. I also have no doubt he does not care.

Feigning ignorance is a tool often used by those who wish to fool others.

The question we should be asking is, what's the real goal of this and other actions? How CAN it play it out?  What seems like a long shot is sometimes only a long shot because someone isn't determined enough to see it through.

But it didn't.  It was pretty bad conditions, the Bills were sitting on a lead, and it was incumbent on Baltimore to make something happen.  The Bills chewed up enough clock on offense and got the field goals to make it tough on the Ravens' comeback attempt.  The defense bent but didn't break.  Had Baltimore converted the 2 points at the end, the Bills would have had 1:33 to get to field goal range (about 40 yards) in regulation and they still had timeouts.

That Baltimore owns two of the biggest threat rushing options in the NFL and decided not to use either of them for those conversions is mind boggling. In fact, the Ravens lack of use for Derrick Henry is still blowing my mind. This is a team where all I heard was about how BIG they are and they have Henry who is absolute kryptonite to the Bills defense and yet they refused to ride him.  They gave up on him far too soon. If they had adopted a ground pound offense they would have broken down the Bills D.  Oh well.

I'm not even worrying about Sunday. It will be what it is. Thankfully I've learned to not worry about that which I cannot control.  It took me far too long in my younger years and those years were full of health issues... but no longer!

That said.. I'd like them to win it all.. that goes without saying. People of Buffalo, those in the city and those who identify as Buffalonians regardless of their geographic location are far overdue for a massive dose of "Hell yeah."

Matt Ellis 100% was a problem.  Under Appert the team will at least on occassion move Thompson around and also move the puck down low on occassion.  But he uses the same assinine entries (or non-entries to be more accurate) that Ellis was a master of designing.

IS still a problem.  Ellis is still in the organization as a coach.  I believe I posted before that one of his responsibilities is face-offs.  So.. that's going well.

It's an interesting move from the Yzerman perspective. The season is slipping away at 13-17-4 and a 4-game losing streak. Do we shake up the roster and acquire Cozens? Or do we change coaches and hope for a Coach Bump?

    The latter worked.

Yeah, although initially it was dicey and then McLellan was quoted as saying at their first practice

    Quote

"Play f—ing hockey.  You've done it your whole lives!"

They've been much better since then. Imagine if that would work with the Sabres.

A lot of Beer leagues are notoriously rough.  There are always more that a few guys in them that can't play hockey at all, that want the enforcer role, or that deliver late checks in a no-check league.   I've seen lots of injuries in these "leagues".

Absolutely.  But in those situations you usually get penalty calls. I was referring more to how to engage in actions that should be a penalty but are not called.  I stopped playing in one league that was just people acting like Matt Rempe was their idol. No thanks.

I prefer the games where everyone competes hard but doesn't cross the line.  Sadly every now and then someone does and then there's payback to be had and that's when knowing how to engage without getting called is important.

And then there’s the beer league refs…

They definitely help in not getting called for penalties.  Last year had a guy on our team get hit from behind, given a concussion, no call. The league admin watched the Live Barn and suspended the guy.  So what exactly were the refs doing?  Yep, collecting their money.  More than once I've had the refs basically say that if people want to beat the snot out of each other to go ahead and get it over with. They aren't calling anything and they don't break up fights.

And then other times you have refs who call everything.. that happened last week in my game where an opponent and I got coincidental minors and neither one of us was certain why it happened. We both telling the ref that the other guy didn't do what the ref thought he did. My opponent got called for a slash that I never felt, heard, anything.  Oh well.

I meant to say national talking heads. But hey, I did hear one say that Lamar played an error free game and deserved the win. The spin to justify the upcoming MVP award is hilarious.

By the way, did you wind up hearing McDermott’s response about the city of losers?

I didn't.. guess I need to hunt it down.  Ahh yes, the error free game despite being responsible for two turnovers..

I don't really care about the MVP.. naturally the SuperBowl would be more important. But, if the Bills were not to make the SuperBowl or lose in the SuperBowl would you feel better about the season if Allen was the MVP?  I wouldn't.

Interesting to hear two points of view on the UPL head hit.    I have seen a lot of hockey games, players will take liberties and act like it was unintentional.  Especially when there is no fear of retaliation.

Let me add to this.  If I, as a lowly beer league level player, know how to do this then so does an all-time superstar like Malkin.

  15. 5 minutes ago, LGR4GM said:

That's what was frustrating about the 2nd half, especially the 3rd qrtr. They refused to run play action and throw down field. Really felt like they came out in "milk the clock" mode and Brady was being an idiot. On 3rd and 5 you don't run a freaking screen to a TE. They just seemed to refuse to be deceptive last night. It was a lot of straightforward stuff which was bizarre. Maybe they were afraid of the Baltimore secondary but I think they had success running and didn't pivot to passing when that started shutting down. Josh Allen barely rolled out or did anything creative.

They won, so no complaints there but they'll need to open up the passing book to keep winning.

I think there are two issues at hand here:

    1. The Bills want to keep their defense off the field. This is their desire to run the ball or complete short passes more than take longer downfield attempts that might result in stopping the clock.

    2. When the Bills need to make a play, Joe Brady over thinks things and tries to get cute resulting in a poorly executed play that fails to achieve its intended objective.

You've nailed it here though. They are playing with fire and eventually they are going to get burned.  It would have been really interesting to see if the Bills could have gotten downfield with the remaining time to kick a game winning FG had the Ravens tied it up.  It would have required them to play downfield, something, as you said, they basically did not do.
