You obviously missed the many times the Pens controlled the play in the D zone and were able to get the scoring chances that led to those goals.

I’m upset that this coach continues to play underachieving vets. It was a waste of a roster spot to only play him for 4 minutes, and then a wasted opportunity to only play 11 forwards tonight when he could have played. That’s poor roster management by the coach.

But you think Savoie would have changed things last night?  He wouldn't have.  And his parents got see his debut in the NHL.  You should probably go ask them how they feel instead of deciding for them.

There are a ton of reasons on how managing a team come into play that explain why Savoie got 1 game and was sent down when he was sent down. But it ultimately boils down to: He was not going to be the one to improve the team. Period.

Welp time to get drunk if true

Let's be honest... even if it's not true that's your likely end state.

I am surprised they pulled the trigger but I suspect it's a roster decision that drove the timeline just as stated above.  People are coming back and he's the odd man out. Even if he scored 3 last night I suspect he was already going to get sent down.  They just had a chance to give him a taste last night.  We might think he'd be upset but I would bet they were very clear with him.

If I were a player in his position and the GM told me that I was going to get sent down, but they could give me 1-2 games depending on how others on the team recovered I would take those 1-2 games.. every time.  I wouldn't be mad I got sent down.. I would be happy that I got to play a game in the NHL.  Yeah, I am sure his goal is to make it back, but sometimes stuff happens in life.

It's not like he'd say, don't play me unless you are going to give me a fair shot at sticking.  Not a chance.

I do suspect Benson follows as well.  To the point, this year is the year to make the playoffs and I don't think either of those players are going to make the change that puts the Sabres over the edge.  I do suspect we'll see some other AHL players come up soon.. and I still think there is a move to be made.

  3. Regarding pull ups, for those who were wearing them when that thread was created and too young to remember.  Mitts had a shoulder issue that was diagnosed after the combine that impacted his ability to do them.

MItts will deserve the payout if he stays at his current pace. There's not even an argument. There have been plenty of stat posts on where he stands over the past 50 or so games in relation to the rest of the NHL.

When he's on the ice, he drives offense and puck possession.  At the moment he's worth more than Cozens.  You don't trade that.

The Sabres are in the best possible seat with him.  He's an RFA.  If he wants to hold out they can trade him. If he signs an offer sheet they can match or get the compensation (which should be pretty good if it's THAT kind of money). if he signs a good deal, they get his productivity.

^This is spot on. To me Cozens doesn’t look like he should have played.

For the most part Cozens has not looked like he should have played most of the season.  He's not performing to the level that justifies his contract, not even close at the moment.  For the love of god the kid needs to learn how to take a face-off without falling down.

The Sabres were completely lucky to win last night.  Officiating sure as hell didn't help them but the Wild studied the book on how to play the Sabres (and they are able to execute it).  Buffalo needs to figure this crap out and I don't think the solution is under contract with this team right now.

I am impressed with Ryan Johnson, he'll make someone expendable and that's a good thing.

I'm not confident in trying to identify the overall fix for this team, but they are not where they need to be.  Not yet. I don't have confidence in playoffs right now. Something needs to change, certainly they need another impact veteran inserted into their bottom 6.  I hope that's all it is... but I'm not certain it is, yet.

Why waste a game last night if they weren't going to play him.

    Am I missing something

It's not a waste of a game.  First, it sends a message to VO on where he stands with the organization.  Second, it demonstrates that against bigger teams that play a relentless game like the Wild do, Savoie isn't going to survive.  Sadly that's showing true of a few too many players on the team right now, but last nights game tells me Savoie can go back to juniors.

I have no doubt he'll do better against more finesse teams, but unless he does well in all situations there's no point in burning a year.

I don't consider Buffalo as an AHL town, but there are clearly struggles filling seats for Sabre games, especially in the lower bowl.  IMHO - there is a lot of "show me" skepticism and thinking where people will not spend $'s until they are convinced the team will show up and play a strong game (win or lose).  That said, even if they get back to winning ways at home, I have a fundamental question for those who still live in the area.....

Does a small market area like Buffalo have enough "wealth" in the region to fill the arena every game?  I'm not trying to insult anybody, but times are tough for a lot of families and I often wonder if there are enough people who have sufficient disposable income to sell out every game....especially the lower bowl seats.  The Bills sell out, but there's X amount of games for an entire season, much less than for a hockey team.  Again, not trying to offend anybody, but a genuine question if there's enough people who can afford to fill the arena every game.....assuming the team plays well enough to get people to WANT to come.

I mean, I have the means and yet when I look at ticket prices I'm like.. GTFO.  I looked at the Penguins game post Thanksgiving and the cheapest seat was $70.  Not a chance.

It really makes little sense from a pricing sensitivity and economic sense to not create a pricing schedule that gets butts in seats.

  7. If the conversation with Edmonton started with some form of swapping Tage Thompson for McDavid I am pretty sure I am listening.  I wouldn't for Dahlin because you need defense.  But effectively tacking on other parts and the main roster change is that?  I'm there all day, every day.

I like Tage but c'mon.. you bring in McDavid and Thompson ain't your 1C and you have 2Cs.

Naturally it all depends what else you have to give up in addition to Thompson to get there.

I agree they are evaluating some of these guys.

I don’t see much of a return for VO but maybe San Jose or Chicago could use him to help with their scoring.
Same with Bryson, Johnson could stick around or go back for playing time when Mule returns. Stillman could come up and be 7D in that case.

Whatever can be had for VO/Bryson is OK with me.

Yeah, I have no need for Bryson, VO, Krebs, etc.  I think Johnson has looked good so far, and he is older so that helps even if his years of experience were not in the NHL.  I think they could also move Rosen.  I don't think they'd want to move Kulich. But knowing what Savoie and Benson bring may shake something loose.

Nice thought, I'd like it to be true, not sure it is.

Yeah. That's the problem.  but I can't imagine they see value in players like VO being on the team. I neglected to list Rousek above but I don't see him sticking either. So let someone take a chance on them.  Who knows...

Well since I haven't seen him play a single minute of a game I have no idea how "gifted" Savoie even is. Time in the NHL: is fine and that's what the 10 game window is for. Then you decide if they stay or go and that's it. To me the Sabres are monkeying around too much and it can cost the team.

It could, but it also allows them to get a sense of the player's ability to adapt in the NHL which could lead them to making decisions on trades that could help the team. I'm not sure how they are monkeying around at the moment. I think they are prepping to make a move and want a bit more data on what they have.

This is very typical of a team in this situation.

Sounds like the NHL failed to disclose some material facts.

Yes, but it's okay for the NHL to not disclose material facts in order to maximize a sale value... whereas apparently it is not okay for the team they were investigating to have withheld material facts in order to maximize a deal they were working.

Does the NHL give up a first round draft pick?  Does Ottawa mysteriously win the #1 overall pick this year? The owner ain't happy.. and he shouldn't be.

So have we figured out a reliable way to watch the Sabres for those of us who are local? I’d rather not pay $130 a month and ESPN+ is useless

Your cheapest bet would be Fubo I think.  You'll just miss out on TNT games. I'm at $90 right now.

Not sure where $130 is coming from, even if I went with Spectrum I would be paying around $90..for 12 months. Then it's all bets are off mode both with the cable package and with the new "free" Xumo box which is only free for 12 months.

  12. Well.. it's being investigated.. which I suppose would happen anyway.

    https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/38780605/adam-johnson-death-police-investigation-england

That said.. I've seen two neck incidents in my lifetime and the first was far more than enough.  It's just horrible, and stuff happens that all the protection in the world can't prevent. You just hope it never does... and sadly this time it did.

No idea what that 2nd one is saying.

If you read it as up! it makes no sense (it's an l not a !).  If it you read it as UPL it makes way more sense.

You are talking quantity, I'm talking quality.  I've been advocating for months to pair Levi with one proven NHL veteran goalie.  Instead KA gave us Levi and 2 AHL quality goalies on his NHL roster.  Once Levi got hurt, the choices in goal became 4 AHL quality goalies.  Who cares who is on the NHL roster, none of UPL, Comrie, Tokarski or Cooley are good enough to carry this team in case of injury.  Why are we in this position?  Easy KA has refused to invest in the position and it's destroying his rebuild.

It was your post that talked both quantity and quality that I was questioning. I'm not talking anything other than trying to figure out which it is you wanted. Your post contradicted itself talking both quantity and quality with your last line insinuating that somehow Adams should have got 3 NHL goaltenders.

The entire distillation of my point is that injuries to your top 2 goaltenders, whoever they are, is usually pretty damning for a team. So no matter WHO you have as those goaltenders, they aren't making saves if they can't play.

I asked questions in my original response to you and you've yet to respond to them. Your only hope was trying to twist words around. You still have not answered the original questions. It's honestly not worth talking about any further.  Clearly you are fixated on trying to make a point of some kind.

Pimlach at least debated the three NHL goaltenders.  I still don't agree with him because nothing is proven, but at least he was addressing the issue.

Actually I wouldn’t write such a post.  I’d have praised KA for taking the risk and attempting to properly fill an obvious hole, just as I praised him for adding Greenway, Clifton and Johnson.  Injuries happen.  I also praised him for bringing back Tokarski as goalie depth in case of injury as I think Tokarski is actually better than Comrie and UPL.

I’ve learned a lot from watching Anpodolis GM the Braves. He seems to have found the balance between developing prospects, signing his young studs long term, trading prospects for vets to fill holes and signing the right FAs.  He is also willing to move from vets like Swanson and Freeman when their prices got too high.

As I’ve said before KA has done so much right making the failures in goal even more glaring.

I’ll put this another way.  Let’s say KA caved and traded Rosen and Savoie for one season of Hellebuyck.  A huge price I know, but how much damage would that have really done to our forward pipeline with Benson, Östlund, Kulich and Wahlberg plus many others still there? We’d still have one of the deepest pools in hockey.  How much better would the Sabres be right now?

It wouldn't matter who Adams traded for Hellebuyck.  The point of the post you made was saying he hadn't done enough to overcome injuries to two goalies. That was what I was questioning.  If he had given up Rosen and Savoie for Hellebuyck then he'd not have them now to give up for a third goalie.

Your original post was focused on how many goalies the Sabres had that were "NHL" level.  Any my question was, you can go get two goalies that are NHL level, both can still get injured, and you'd still be in this spot.

    2 hours ago, Pimlach said:

Well, New Jersey has 3 on their roster right now.  Two are home grown prospects, both Schmid and Daws are their future and have looked very good in the AHL.  Something Levi has not experienced and UPL was maybe mediocre in.

Venacek is the vet that they picked up for the price of a Conner Clifton contract.  Vanecek signed a 3 year deal when KA was messing with guys like Tokarski and Dell.   Vanecek is not viewed as a blocker, he is an enabler.

As for your passionate  defense of Adams trying.  Trying means nothing without results.  Trying is good for school kids, but not good enough for executives in this business.  Adam’s job is to find players to help us win RIGHT NOW.

As for injuries, they can and will happen.  They happened yesterday.  Injuries are why you make moves to get veteran depth. We have none.  New Jersey does though.

New Jersey has 3 goalies.  You are pointing to Daws.  Let's just say he's as proven as Levi is at this point.  The argument of "promise" on a goaltender gets shot down around here in relation to Buffalo criteria so it doesn't hold for another team. So New Jersey has Schmid, who has part of 1 season with some success and has looked like crap this year.

1-0-1 in 3 games (so he must have been pulled) - .863 SV%, 4.07 GAA.  Whereas Comrie is at .914 and 2.45.  He's 1-1 and we know why he didn't finish the third game.

So Schmid had success last post season.  Binnington won a cup in his first year called up to St. Louis and has been crap since.  Bottom line, NJ has one goaltender in Vanacek who has been reasonably good and two unproven young goaltenders.

If Schmid gets to age 26 and is an NHL goaltender, then great, but he can't be anointed one yet.

My passionate defense of Adams?  I didn't defend Adams.  I asked what people expected him to do which was "more than trying".  We all know he tried and was unable to make it happen.  So i requested people to respond with what they perceived would have been good.  I'll freely admit that Adams could probably get any goaltender in the league if he wanted.  I am sure a trade of Thompson, Cozens, and Dahlin would get him ANYONE. But the question is, how stupid should Adams be to go acquire a goaltender?

No one ever seems to answer that question. They just critique the lack of result without analyzing what it would take to get the result they would be happy with.

And in the end?  it would not matter.  As I said, if Adams had been able to get two NHL goaltenders without giving up too much it would not change the fact that if BOTH were injured, you'd still be on #3.

Do you think the Devils Daws would hold up?  He might...but it's absolutely a crap shoot.  What makes Daws any better than Levi?

But for the real kicker on here, let's analyze the TB Lightning, who has a goaltender who has played 7 games so far this year with a record of 4-1-2.  That goaltender has a .925 SV% and 2.56 GAA.  Hell, based on those stats that would be an NHL goaltender the Sabres could use... of course on this forum there was a whole lot of speculation that TBL would go get a goaltender and that they should be interested in Comrie or UPL... because people all know Jonas Johansson was not an NHL goaltender...

    Oh.. but apparently he is.

The inevitable response is... oh but the Lightning are able to play better defense in front of him.  And if that's the argument you want to make then the natural counter-argument is.. and has been.. until the Sabres skaters play better defense in front of their goaltender... every goaltender will not look NHL ready.
