  1. The Bills and Sabres were never in danger of moving?

"Via the Associated Press, the Buffalo Fan Alliance has found several press releases referring to Rogers communications consultant Roger Rai as part of an ownership group “attempting to acquire and move the Buffalo Bills to Toronto.”

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/08/14/report-documents-hint-at-plan-to-move-bills-to-toronto/

    Who's Balsillie?

He contacted Golisano about purchasing the Sabres and offered more money than the Pegula's. He also wanted to move the team to Hamilton, Ont.

  2. Not directly & not intentionally, but that was a VERY real possibility if the guy who the league initially hooked its wagon to had gotten the team. Hammister was severely undercapitalized & when he lost out on the Sabres, he took his ball (the Destroyers) & ran crying off to Columbus.

Truly doubt that he could've withstood the lockout. In which case, the best case result is either the Sabres are in bankruptcy AGAIN &/or are sold AGAIN to local buyers & the worst case is Hammister runs to Welland or KC or he sells to Balsillie.

Quinn is a self-serving putz but he did talk Golisano into outbidding Hammister. (Which considering both of their finances wasn't particularly difficult.) The more surprising thing was the NHL actually picked the right bidder in the end after initially backing the wrong one. They never seem to get that stuff right; luckily for us they did this one time.

He did? Back in '97?

Assuming you meant the tank was Regier's doing initially. If you put that one on Tom as well, then it's time for another emoji.

Forgot about Regis. But it was Regier's idea to tank. The last few years Regier was the GM, he made a lot of terrible draft picks which also set the team back.

  3. I'm calling out anyone who questions the Pegula's. Period!!!!!

Yes they are going through a learning curve. Yes that pain is shared by ALL Buffalo sports fans.

    But......GFY!!!!!

Without the Pegula's vision the Buffalo region most likely would be without an NHL or NFL team! And what I am saying is power to truth.

There will be ups and downs, but to question ownerships commitment to win is hogwash. Like any other human beings, they make mistakes. I won't judge their ownership based on those mistakes. Instead.......I'm greatful for there dedication and commitment to the region.

So I say, Thank you Terry and Kim. I know it's a tough learning curve, but please, continue on and know you have the support of the majority not only in the region, but thousands upon thousands of WNY ex-patriots as well to stay focused on the DREAM of championships!!!

    +1

  4. Darcy became the GM (1997) almost 6 years prior to Golisano buying the team (2003). In fact, both Darcy and Lindy were hired under Knox family ownership.

EDIT: Yeah, I wasn't the first one to catch that.

Good catch! I forgot about Regis owning the team, oh well, that's what happens when you get old!

  5. My memory is not as sharp as it once was, but I don't think that Pegula 'rescued' either team.

He bought the Sabres from another billionaire who saw a great chance to make a nice profit (OSP, it can be argued, 'rescued' the Sabres out of the clutches of the NHL ... I do not believe that the NHL would have allowed for a Sabre move, or fold).

Now there was some sense that had Pegula not bought the Bills some yeah-hoo very possibly could have and moved them.  I do not believe for a second that the NFL would have approved a Bills move.

I think the Pegula's would be well served to hire the best football and hockey people they can find and let them run each team ... real football and real hockey people, not the make believers.

You could say that about the Sabres, but every Sabres fan that has been following the team for more than ten years can tell you that Golisano was a "bargain basement" owner, meaning he only saw the Sabres as a business and had financial mandates on the team. Golisano hired Darcy Regier and it was his idea to start "the tank." After the 2007 offseason debacle, how do you think fans would react/respond to Golisano if Regier was still the Sabres GM and they continued to suck today?

In regards to the Bills and the NFL not letting them move, think again. The NFL has been wanting a team in LA for many years and they have two: Chargers and Rams. Also, the Raiders were approved for relocation and they have a very passionate fan base just like the Bills. So if the NFL owners approved for three teams to move, why wouldn't they have approved the move of the Bills to Toronto if JBJ purchased the team?

  6. This thread is so far off-base.

Pegula rescued both franchises, put a lot of money into them, look at Harbor Center, etc... did so much for the community, and people here lambaste him because the teams haven't won a Championship in the couple of years he's been owner.   Gimme a break.   It takes time, both franchises are moving in the right direction IMO, and they're still in Buffalo, you have nothing to complain about.

    Not even remotely true.

    Amen!

The Pegula's are new sports owners and are still learning on the job. It's not like the Sabres were a Stanley Cup Caliber team and Terry said "no" to big contracts and don't resign the teams top two centers (like Golisano did with Drury and Briere). When the Pegula's took over, they had a bunch of overrated wingers, no good Centers and an above average goalie, that team wasn't built to win a Stanley Cup.

  7. I agree a great take on the history of the Sabres.

The Bowman era was also defined as a tearing down of the Punch core for draft pics after a two year desperation try with the French Connection still in tact. All those first round pics never got us there.

I can't remember if it was posted in this thread, but I agree with the point made that the 1993 team was poised for greatness and if Hasek dominated that season's playoff like Patrick Roy did the Sabres would have had a great run at it.

Roy was the difference in that second round series ... all 4 loses were 4 - 3 with 3 going to OT. Roy was the difference for the Canadiens all through that playoff.

I agree, Roy was the difference maker for the Canadiens that year.

Another thing I remember from 1993 was the Sabres finally beat the Bruins and advanced past the first round of the playoffs, plus the Sabres swept them 4-0. I think it was their first series win in over a decade at that point. I always hated losing to the Bruins in the playoffs so it was great to not only beat them, but to sweep them in the process (it would be great if the Bills could do that to the Patriots (go 2-0 in the divisional regular season matchups)).

  8. 1970-75 Building era.

    75-79 Missed expectations era,

    80-85 The lost Bowman years.

85-92 Hoping to see round 2.

93 Anyone wanna tell Muckler we have ####ing Hasek?

94-01 - They know, they know.

02-04 - The Biron years. 'Nuff said.

05-07 - Awesome teams, crappy unis, It ALMOST works.

08-16 Call it what you will.

The 92-93 season was a fun season. Lafontaine had 148 points [53G, 95A], Mogilny had 127 points [76G, 51A], Hawerchuk had 96 points [16G, 80A] and Andreychuk had 61 points in 52 games [29G, 32A] before being traded to Toronto for Grant Fuhr. It's too bad Hasek didn't become "the Dominator" that season that way we could have kept Andreychuk. IMO, the 92-93 team, with a dominant Hasek plus Andreychuk would have won the cup.

The Sabres ended up losing to the eventual Stanley Cup Champs that year [Montreal], each game was 4-3 (3 out of 4 went to OT).

Will we ever see a Sabres team that has two players with 100 points or more in a single season again?

  9. Problem with the Bills is that they barely draft QB's and spend way too many draft picks on RB's and DB's. In the 20 years since Kelly retired, the Bills drafted five QB's: Cardale Jones, EJ Manuel, Levi Brown, Trent Edwards and JP Losman. With playing against an elite QB in the division [brady], you need to have a very good/elite QB to compete against him. Back in the 80's and 90's, the AFC East had Marino and Kelly as the top two QB's. Since Brady has been the starter, he's had no real competition in the division against him.

IMO, Sabres are close. They just need to bolster their defense and they'll be fine.

In regards to Bucky, both him and Sullivan are two terrible hacks and should have been fired a long time ago.

  10. Per Buffalo News no tag for Gilmore

Some team will overpay him. Gilmore wants top 5 CB money, but he's not going to get that from the Bills.

I wish the Bills would stop drafting CB's/Safeties in the first round as they are rarely resigned beyond their rookie contract, hence it being a waste of pick as your first round picks should be impact players that stay on your team for eight to ten years.

  11. Tim Murray stated he was not looking at a five year rebuild with this team as he traded assets to get players like ROR, Kane, Bogosian and Lehner to make the Sabres a better team sooner than later. So far, the results have not been great. Granted, the Sabres best player [Eichel] was out with a high ankle sprain to start the season and other players have had their share of injuries. Did Murray pull the plug on the tank job too soon? Should Murray have tried tanking for another year or two to be able to draft in the Top 5 for one or two more years? Should Murray have kept all of those draft picks instead of trying to accelerating the rebuild process?

  12. You are not the only metal head here for sure.

I saw Disturbed in '06 at Ozzfest. One of the best live performances I have ever seen. Draiman's voice is unreal. Pure power.

I saw Disturbed over the summer, they put on an awesome show!

Next show I'm planning on going to is Testament, Sepultura and Prong in Richmond, VA in April.

I'm a metalhead , but I don't listen to any of those bands.

As far as groups from buffalo go, give me Cannibal Corpse over The Goo Goo Dolls any day.

As far as this thread goes, I may never go to another concert again, because there is no way I enjoy another concert as much as I did Rush last year.

+1 Cannibal Corpse is awesome. I'm in the video for "Staring through the eyes of the dead" when they filmed it at the Icon in 1994.
