Tonight I took my entire family to the Bruins game.  They seemed to come out ok, but the moment the Bruins went on the power play, they folded like a tent.  Once the first goal went in, the wind went out of their sails.  Poor passing led to turnovers and scoring chances.

I am frustrated to have to pay what I did to see a garbage product on the ice.  There’s no accountability and seemingly no answers from anyone.  I have been a Sabres fan for my entire life.  I don’t think I have ever felt as dejected as I do tonight.

I feel your pain. My son and I drove up from VA to the Bills/Cowboys game, then went to the Sabres/Blue Jackets game (sat two rows behind the Sabres bench). The first goal scored by the Sabres was great…then Columbus scored the next seven goals. It was our first Sabres game since 2011 and last one for another long while.

I don't take everything Paul Hamilton says seriously.  Let's discuss this team, shall we?

Goaltending: Half the NHL wants goaltending. Most of the names we tossed around during the offseason weren't moved or are playing worse than what we have now. (Antii Raanta, anyone?)

Team regression: Anyone recall how I used to rant about how awful Rasmus Dahlin was, and how I couldn't understand how a #1 pick could suck so bad? And everyone here told me to relax? Well Rasmus turned out okay, didn't he? So what we are seeing now is an entire team of young players (except maybe JJP) having a slump. Guys who were our bedrock last year are not playing at that level now. Will they pull out eventually? I hope so.

Free Agency: I don't think Kevyn Adams talks about players wanting to play in Buffalo for giggles. I think it's a real issue. Does winning fix that? Maybe a bit, but not for everyone. Sabres were the up-and-coming darlings last year. You'd think that would have gotten us some free agents, no?

As I posted elsewhere, if you want to clean house now, you are essentially saying give me 3 more years (minimum) of playoff drought.

I disagree about starting over new will automatically spell 3 years or more with no playoffs. Getting a good GM/coach to weed out the players that aren’t cutting it would be a good start. One thing I miss about Lindy Ruff was that he would bench players he thought were slacking…there’s no way DG would do that, he wants to be the players buddy.

Was that you calling Sal on WGR this morning?

So if you favor a new regime, no doubt you are in favor of clearing out the roster? After all, no new regime wants to get stuck with players they didn't draft. I'm sure we can get some nice draft picks with out roster. I have to imagine Tage, Dahlin, JJP, and Quinn will all blossom on new teams. Of course we might keep Benson.

Then we'll have to stop winning so we get the best possible draft position. After all you want the be in the best position for your rebuild. But we won't call it a tank. 😉

And you have to give this new regime at least two years, right? If they don't make the playoffs in two years, then we'll just have to clear house again

Don't you love that new regime smell?

Yes, that was me. How have you been?

I’m not the type that feels you need to fire everyone every 2-3 years. I’m just looking at the overall picture. The team has regressed significantly this year. IMO, not signing a veteran goalie in the offseason and starting Levi in Buffalo (instead of Rochester) were huge mistakes. Also, Adams only signed lower level talent this offseason and no one to help the Sabres take the next step. Adams inexperience is costing the team (again!) Even Paul Hamilton talked about how Adams inexperience has hurt the team this past offseason after the segment I called into.

Depending how the rest of the season plays out I would promote KA to President of Hockey Operations and bring in a new GM - Scott Nichol, if he is available.  He trained under one of the best in Poile.

Then see where the Sabres are in the coaching area - I think Granato is still good, but his assistants are mostly terrible.

I cringe at the idea of bringing in another “up and comer” who’s inexperienced. Between Murray, Botterill and Adams, it hasn’t worked.

  5. Seems since the Pegula’s bought the Sabres, they’ve had inexperienced GM’s (Murray, Botterill and Adams all first time GM’s) and mostly inexperienced coaches (Rolston and Krueger having prior HC experience). Unfortunately, the results have showed over the years.

Should the Sabres bring in an experienced GM who’s had success in the league, as well as a retread HC, who’s had previous success?

  6. Ryan starts talking about Darcy Regier at the 14:15 mark and described Darcy as a visionary with how he was able to build the Sabres with the budget restraints he had. I like that Ryan said that, as I felt it was an indirect jab at Golisano/Quinn. It’s too bad the Sabres didn’t have owners that were on a budget crunch during the 2005-07 period. Still baffles my mind we had two of the best goalies in the NHL between Hasek and Miller for about a twenty year period and no Stanley Cups to show for.

  7. I just watched two episodes of a new show called “Coopers Bar,” mainly because Rhea Seehorn [Kim Wexler from Better Call Saul] is in the show. The main character in the show is Buffalo actor, Louis Mustillo. Louis plays “Cooper” who works in Hollywood and is a former bartender from Buffalo. In the first episode, they mentioned the Bills greatest comeback against the Oilers. The second episode is heavily Buffalo area focused (discusses Buffalo weather, bars, chicken wings, etc.) Direct TV lets you watch the first two episodes for free, then you have to pay for the rest. So far, I enjoy it and it’s nice to see Buffalo getting a lot of love in a TV series. Also love seeing Rhea Seehorn!

  8. I think Kim was overwhelmed with grief seeing how Howard was executed, what it did to Howard’s wife and how the whole sandpiper situation cost the company to downsize by half, by which a lot of people will be out of jobs. Glad Kim is still alive, but seeing her leave (a BCS original from episode 1), was sad to see as it was an end of an era. Once that happened, it was also a goodbye to Jimmy as he fully transitioned to Saul.

I’m curious to see how much pre-Breaking Bad stuff we’ll see with Saul, as well as how much post-Breaking Bad stuff we’ll see with Gene over the next four episodes. My guess is Gene will get in contact with Kim since Gene has been spotted by the cab driver in the mall. Curious if Gene will have Kim turn him into the police so Kim gets the reward money for Saul.

  9. I hate to say this, but the rebuild that’s going on now with the Sabres is how it should have went years ago. Instead, Murray gave away almost every draft pick and prospect just to speed up the rebuild, which backfired big time and set the franchise back many years. With Botterill, did someone recommend him to the Sabres just to intentionally sabotage the team?!

Did KA stick with bad goaltending in hopes to stay at the bottom of the league to land another high draft pick? IMO, it’s possible KA knew the team wasn’t ready to contend for a playoff spot and it was going to be a development year for the younger players this season, so why sign any key FA’s to a big contract when the team isn’t ready?

Great. Just like Motörhead, Walls of Jericho, Metal Church, Kamelot, Soilwork, Epica, Chthonic, and many others. I was a booker/talent buyer for almost a decade.

Celtic Frost was the worst, though.

Heard they didn’t like this song about them from S.O.D.

I think one of the biggest problems is turnover. Fans as well as players (a few said this in the exit interviews) are tired of starting over and over during the season and even between seasons. There’s no direction.

IMO, that can be attributed to hiring inexperienced GM’s every few years, as the new GM had his way of building the team and it backfired. We saw this cycle with the Bills for many years until McDermott and Beane were hired, rebuilt the Bills their way and made it successful. While the Pegula’s hit a home run in hiring a first time head coach [Beane] and first time GM [McDermott], I know Terry has gotten a lot of advice from Bill Polian since he bought the Bills. Maybe it’s about time Terry seeks out an experienced hockey guy and listens to him, in order to get out of this vicious circle the Sabres have been in.

Serious question, which group would you rather have, 5 years later?

Kane, Bogosian, Lehner, O’Reilly, Asplund, Deslauriers, Kulikov

    or

Grigorenko, Zadorov, Myers, Lemieux, Armia, Roslovic, Pysyk, Compher, McNabb, Cernak and White?

Now that the draft picks have settled out, I think that’s the net of players still in the NHL.

I think I go the first group, largely on the strength of O’Reilly.

Good question. I just think Murray gave up way too much between draft picks and prospects to get those players. It just seemedMurray was only focused on having one or two great lines, but that’s nowhere near enough to win in the NHL. You need three to four good lines to win. You can’t expect your top line to win you every game.

Was it his trading away assets for Kane, Bogosian, Lehner, & O'Reilly that set the Sabres back or was it Botterill letting them go for pennies on the $?

IMHO, running the hockey equivalent of going from a 3-4 to a 4-3 & then back to a 3-4 set the team back further than the individual manueverings of any of the 4 GMs that have worked for the Pegulas.

My concern since yesterday is that Adams might now be resetting back to another youth movement.  Which sets them back again, all over again.

IMO, it’s a combination of bad decisions throughout the years. I’d say both.I get that Murray was trying to speed up the tank, but he gutted the team of the assets the tank built up (prospects, high draft picks).

The Pegula’s biggest problem IMO is with hiring and continuing to hire inexperienced GM’s.  The last three Sabres GM’s were assistant GM’s with no prior GM experience.

Hindsight is 20/20.  Keeping DR may have worked better, but I think TP needed to move on from DR and LR when the rebuild began not after it started.  He also needed to bring in experienced hockey people to guide the rebuild as if it were an expansion team. (The tank turned us into a virtual expansion team.) Instead he replaced DR with newly minted executive Pat LaFontaine who brought in first time GM TM.  Neither man had any idea on how to build a team and it showed.

Agreed 100% Not only did Murray trade away tons of prospects, he traded away high draft picks as well. By trading away all those assets, he set the team back many, many years.
