  1.

So here's what we're missing in GMTM's world. Bold is acquisitions and italics are possible upgrades.

    Kane   McDavid   #RYAN O'REILLY

    Moulson Reinhart Ennis

    Foligno Girgensens Gionta

    Deslauriers #4 C #4 RW

    Bogosian #1 RHD

    Ristolainen Zadorov

    Gorges Pysyk

    Starting Goalie

    Backup Goalie

I don't agree with this as lines, but I think as a depth chart it is exactly correct and I also think it could be a competitive team, assuming Reinhart and McEichel can play.

McCormick, Flynn and Larsson are serviceable candidates for the fourth line, IMO.

So the question is what kind of 1RW and 2/3D can we acquire using some kind of combination of free agency, Hodgson, Grigorenko and picks/prospects.

I see a lot of people matching Kane with McEichel and Moulson with Reinhart.

    I prefer the opposite.

Line-wise, I think Reinhart and Kane are a perfect match: a force of nature who demands the puck with a hockey genius who can consistently get it to him.

I think McEichel wants the puck too much to play with Kane.

Moulson made his living in Tavares' shadow and I think he was signed specifically to do the same for our new franchise centre.

  2. Love Kaleta, but he's done.

Glad this injury means Murray can't trade him.

Hope he retires as a Sabre, or signs on as a Rochester vet to teach Baptiste and Bailey and Fasching how to be Sabres.

  3. But the thing is, Nolan's choice of tactics isn't getting the desired effect--we *are* getting blown out.

This. This is where Nolan has lost me.

I'd imagine this is where we'd diverge in our analysis and you would blame Hodgson for being lazy, and I'd blame Nolan for being inept.

    And you'd both be right.

Anything to make the anti-Nolan argument work.

What is the pro-Nolan argument? How has he been good? Don't say helping the tank because they could have paid Sabretooth an appearance fee to do that.

What has he done to deserve coming back after the worst season in Sabres history?

  4. I am not a Phil Kessel fan, but the man is an elite NHL goal scorer.

To us he's probably not worth the price he'll eventually fetch because he's probably too old for our window.

But of course you kick the tires.

qwk's offer is not much different than what we got for Pominville and he is a better player than JP.

  5. I am reasonably certain Murray expected more from Matt Moulson, Brian Gionta, Cody Hodgson, and Chris Stewart this season.

He probably also was betting on a little more from pending UFAs like Meszaros and Benoit and Neuvirth and Stafford.

And he probably had an unrealistic hope that some of the kids would have contributed more than they have.

You could also make an argument that while nearly half the roster has underachieved, virtually no one has overachieved.

The mantra this year was development. Who is developing?

This part is not particularly aimed at you Sizzle, but I hate this idea that has crept into the fanbase that Nolan is beyond reproach because the management wants him to lose.

  6. You think it'd happen that quickly after the end of the season?  I guess it makes sense to give them the most possible time to find a replacement.

I think he's being evaluated every day and Tim will have his mind made up by season's end.

And Tim's not the type to wait around.

  7. There was a post here about a year ago about how the Penguins tanked to get Mario Lemieux. Part of the reasons people felt they were obviously tanking was the db coaching decisions. Talented players being benched, bad defensive players starting in the d zone while bad I players starting in the I zone...

This season just reminds me exactly of that 30 minute show.

So you're saying he is on exactly the same page as his GM.

  8. I'm tired of excusing Ted Nolan for this team.

As bad as Cody Hodgson has been, he hasn't played on the power play in a month and I don't know if he has been on the first unit all year. Sure he sucks 5 on 5, but, given time and space, he can create better than most of our roster.

Instead, Brian Flynn — who works hard, but will be lucky to score 40 goals in his NHL career — centres our 2nd power play and Zemgus, who has three PP points all season is unchallenged as our number one PP pivot.

Balls played the point on the Colorado PP. Like Hodgson, he can't play in traffic, but he has some skills on the point.

Matt Moulson is good complementary PP forward, but no one sees him as a point man on any team's power play. He's not a great passer or playmaker and he doesn't have a big shot. But hey, the guy he's replacing is Josh Gorges, you know, the guy with 13 PP points in 10 NHL seasons. At least Risto and Zads get a look on unit two.

Johan Larsson is a solid, hard-working prospect who has mastered the AHL and is at the point in his career where he needs to show what he has at the NHL level. He gets less than 7 minutes. Torrey Mitchell, a career 4th-liner and UFA to be, gets nearly 17.

I would think at this point in the season, Tim Murray would like to see some marketability salvaged to Hodgson's tarnished reputation, to remind other GMs that Benoit might be a useful depth pickup for the playoffs, and to give some kids a chance to show what they can do. Or maybe he would just like to see us score on the PP sometime.

Instead, Ted continues to favour veterans and "reward hard work" with ice time, regardless of how ineffective his strategy has been in winning hockey games or developing assets.

Yes, Benoit is one of many fringe hockey players on this squad and Hodgson is a dishcloth, but Ted has not done a good job of developing talent or effectively utilizing it.

He clearly is not on the same page as his GM.
He is great guy and I will give him credit for holding the room together.
But I will be very disappointed if he is not fired as soon as the season is over.
  9. For whatever reason, many posters have written off Johan, I think y'all are nuts. He's looked good as an Amerk and not out of place as a Sabre.

Larsson has not clicked with Nolan for whatever reason. I have this weird feeling Nolan xenophobicly expects him to be an offensive player and has ignored the fact he is an obnoxious little prick with good hockey sense and better possession skills than most of the current roster. I'd like to see him used properly after the deadline, with a shot at Flynn, Mitchell or Stafford's minutes.

My hope over the few weeks is Neuvirth plays him self into trade-able, so I hope they do play him often and he performs well. Then start bringing up the young ones.

I'm thinking we are going to re-sign Michal, and target a team with a goalie logjam (Canucks with Lack and Markstrom maybe) to bring someone in to compete with him next year.

Then I can come home and watch the Sabres play.  I want to see Bogosian entrench himself in the hearts of Sabres fans by putting a hurting on some Flyers forwards.. especially those named Giroux and Simmonds.

Yes please. I find myself really wanting to like big Zach.
