  1. There is at best a 25% chance of drafting McDavid next year. If there is less than a 25% chance of any of those guys making a team-changing impact, then the team has not drafted wisely.

    Two clarifications:

    1) I said in the McDavid derby. I am not counting on winning the lottery. Eichel looks just as promising, and after the two franchise players, there are a few more Reinhart-level first-line forwards as well. We need another first-line forward to go along with whoever we pick this year. We will probably need to finish in the bottom five to get one.

    2) I was talking about making a team-changing impact next year. Give Girgs another year or two, and the two d-men even longer. Grigo maybe not at all.

  2. If an 8th overall selection and a top pick in a relatively weak draft is the reward for all this brutal suffering then I want a refund.

I'd be an board with Weave if Rolston hadn't ###### things up with a late season charge to 23rd.

Barkov, Mackinnon or Drouin would have satisfied the need for a first-line forward.

  3. What is the expectation for Moulson?

A lower first and a second, or equivalent level prospects?

Tyler Toffoli is a name that's been tossed around.

Kings fans say it's too much because he's their best prospect.

But according to the prospect rankings I've seen he's considered to be on par with Armia.

The kings next best looks like Tanner Pearson, who also looks like a good fit.

    They are both offensive wingers.

Pearson and a first, or Toffoli and a second look reasonable to me.

  4.

I think a #2 Drury-type center is worth a good chunk more than a solid but not great #2 defenseman in trade. Pittsburgh got a solid player plus the number eight pick in the draft for Jordan Staal.

I think Ehrhoff is better than Sutter and Girgorenko was the number 12 pick in the same draft, so I don't think the Grigs/Ehrhoff offer is as out to lunch as you think.

But I agree the only way O'Reilly is traded is if contract talks get ugly. Remember, he is guaranteed a qualifying offer of $6.5 million. If the Avs want to get the cap hit down it is going to take a mega long-term deal.

  5. I guess the situation with O'Reilly is that the Avs need to pay him at least $6.5 million next year to keep his rights, thanks to the Calgary offer sheet. That's a lot of coin for a second-line player, unless you see him as a Bergeron.

They can, however, sign him to a longer-term offer to reduce the cap hit. The potential issues are bad blood over the offer sheet and Colorado's desire not to pay him any more than the team-friendly Duchene contract.

There is no need to make a call on this until July, but Feb. 28 is the first day he can be traded.

Media in Vancouver are in a frenzy over a Lebrun report Canucks are very interested.

  6.

I can't go into next season planning on a tank. Life is too short.

We have to live. We have to look forward to the games and enjoy them.

We can't just write off another year in the hope that some 18-year-old (who will probably the 4th or 5th pick in the draft) will someday lead us to the promised land.

Give me Nolan, Miller, Callahan, another couple of good forwards they find somewhere this summer and continued development from Myers and the rest of the D and I'll look forward to the playoffs next year.

You know I was almost there. But then it hit me that the Sabres are almost competitive with a line-up of Matt D'Agostinis.

And if Miller stays, we make a few judicious acquisitions and a few of our kids come on, we could challenge for a playoff spot with our most talented forward being Cody Hodgson.

And we will fool ourselves into climbing back on to the almost good enough Darcy Regier cycle.

I want a cup. We need more elite talent. And we aren't going to get it picking 11.

Let's make this suffering worth something.

  7.

After dealing with the Grigorenko situation, I doubt they mess with that monster again.

There is a difference. Top picks often play right away. 12th picks almost never do.

I don't really see Hodgson or Grigs as a 3rd line center, they (so far) don't have the right kind of game. Someone's gonna have to move to wing (I'm thinking Grigs).

Someone is going to have to move to another team. Trades are step two in the rebuild.

  8. I push for more, but if it is the best offer on the table, I take Briere for Stafford, straight across.

Briere still has more goal-scoring ability than all but a couple Sabres, he's a great guy in the room to show the kids the way and he is a UFA next year who we might get something for at the deadline.

Stafford might rebound in Montreal, but his time here is way past due.

What he brings on the ice can be filled by any number of Matt D'Agostinis.

  9. I woke up this morning saying trade 'em all.

Ehrhoff, Hodgson, Myers, Foligno, Girgensons, Pysyk, Ennis and our prospects are only going if another better young player is coming back.

But Moulson, Miller and Ott could be some contender's missing piece. They will be in demand. Auction them off. Get what you can, when you can.

Give them all hugs, tell them we will open up the chequebooks to bring 'em back in July. But move them now because their value will never be higher.

Depth defencemen are always in demand for a playoff run. Get what you can for Weber, McBain and Tallinder. We have better defencemen coming anyway.

If anyone thinks Stafford, McCormick, Konopka or any of our other pluggers has any value at all, take what they offer.

It's the only time we will ever get anything for any of them.

Sell, sell, sell. Hoard picks, prospects. emerging players, cap space and a few more pending UFAs we can sell off at the deadline next year.

Burn this place to the ground. Make sure we have a fast horse in the Eichel/McDavid derby.

    Let the tanks roll.

  10.

Are you saying Miller's talent is a slight upgrade or his contract situation is better?

I disagree. Miller is much more than a slight upgrade from Scrivens. In terms of goaltending talent it isn't close IMO, however, the difference in trade returns will not reflect this discrepancy.

Sorry boys. I need a sarcasm emoticon.

  11. per lebrun at espn, bryan murray's stated intention is to move young assets in order to win now.

sounds like ott'wa may be in line to get regiered.

i'm sure nephew tim would be happy to relieve the senators of a young prospect or two, in exchange for some seasoned vets.

Bryan harbours a secret hatred for the Sens. He told Lafontaine that if he hired Tim, Bryan would trade us all the Sens best prospects for Stafford and Leino.

Then he will retire and take a job with us a junior senior advisor.

  12.

this story tells just how in tough Maurice may be...http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/jets-coach-maurice-in-tough-with-kane-byfuglien/

two best players appear to be immature, selfish weenies.

Wow, harsh stuff. And my desire to acquire Kane drops a few notches.

Pay close attention to the dressing room stuff in that article all of you who think Grigorenko should be given a spot just because.

Avoiding that kind of situation is exactly why Nolan and Lafontaine are doing things the way they are: winning involves setting standards and adhering to them; it takes men, not boys.
