  1. Not sure if it was on the American broadcast, but the US had been warned earlier in the game about whacking the goalie after a save.

Doesn't change the fact that was a horrible call on lamoureaux.

And I am surprised there isn't more bitching about the penalty call on Wickenheiser's breakaway. Since when has a one-handed push on the butt, away from the boards, been a penalty?

But hockey games aren't that simple, especially between two teams this close.

American keeper made a boneheaded play on the tying goal and was very slow coming across on the winner.

Canadian keeper was huge in the first minute of OT.

US relaxed too early in the third, opened the door and lost their composure.

Poulin had the puck on her stick twice with the game on the line and was ice water money.

Hope the game tomorrow is that entertaining.

  2. That staked lamb just keeps looking juicier. There's no way the Islanders pick isn't top five now.

And if this is one of those nine-month ligament issues, the Islanders might be opening their Christmas presents with a Rolston-sized lead in the McDavid derby.

I've always thought top five this year they have to defer, but with a recovering JT and not Vanek, it's tough to see them not being a bottom-five team next year too.

This is looking more and more like Darcy's best trade ever.

  3. If the team isn't sold on Nolan, why fire him at this end of the season when it will be controversial?

With our talent base, it's almost inevitable the coach who starts next year will be fired before we turn into a contender. That's the hockey way anywhere but Darcy's Buffalo and David's Nashville.

Ted can be that sacrificial lamb as well as anyone else.

  4. Putting the trash talk aside for one moment of weakness:

Americans look good, but they haven’t played anyone with our ability to play defence.

Then again, we haven’t played anyone with their ability to score goals.

Quick is better than Price (Miller is better than both) but not enough that it it will be the difference.

    I think it’s a pick ‘em.

Now back to lining my septic field with Phil Kessel hockey cards.

  5. Here is an article on the matter that falls in line with some of my thought process. It is 2 years old but still is relevant.

It's a good rule of thumb, but it should not be a bible. In fact, given that your theory is the trend, it's probably created the classic buy-low scenario for goalies. Carey Price and Johnathan Bernier were good picks where they were drafted. If the 2014 version of these guys is available between 20 and 50, you'd be smart to take him. There is a better chance the best goalie in the draft is going to help your team than the 20th-best forward.

How many goalies did Darcy draft using the we'll get lucky in the mid-rounds theory? How many of them made the NHL?

Don't let analytics get in the way of eyeball scouting. If there is a goalie there after 20 you believe in, you take him.

  6.

To me, the simple math is we need a lot of help at forwards, and the more 1st round forwards you pick the more chance you hit on a few of them. BUt it's not that big a deal. If with the Sabres 3rd 1st round pick they take a GT it's OK, I guess, but it'll be interesting to see what skaters are picked shortly after that end up making it. I'm not talking about the 5th round Datsyuk, of course, since no one is betting on those guys.

Actually, that's not far off where I am either. Our most pressing need is clearly forward talent and that's where our highest picks should go.

I'm just saying that with all of our first and second rounders in this three-year stretch, it would be a mistake not to use one on a blue chip goalie. We've only done it once in 10 or 15 years and it shows. All those mid-round goalie picks over that stretch have yielded only one miller and no other NHLers.

  7. Are you seriously saying Enroth is better then Halak?

The Blues don't want Enroth, and I highly doubt they want to give up their future #1 to take on Miller

The deal more then likely would be Miller for Halak and additional picks/prospects, with number and quality being determined on if they can sign Miller.

The Blues have other good assets that they can use to acquire Miller and not have to include Allen.

I do think Enroth is slightly better than Halak. I see them both as goalies who can be adequate starters for good teams, but will always leave you wanting more.

As far as Allen goes, I agree the Blues have no reason to trade him and probably won't. They have a bunch of good young wingers and can afford to move one, and the Sabres need them.

  8.

. Do you expect them to take a forward with every pick for the next five years?

This. I'm not going to debate the drafting a goalie high thing with LGR again; we will have to agree to disagree.

But we have so many picks, simple math makes it logical to use one on a goalie.

Looking around the league, the majority of high goalie picks like Allen and Gibson and Fucale remain top prospects.

  9. Still doesn't make sense, the Blues could just keep Allen, offer Halak as part of the Miller Deal with picks/prospects and get to keep someone with a higher upside/future in Allen instead of taking on Enroth.

In any deal with the blues, the Sabres will have to take a goalie, either Halak or Elliot, back (unless part of a 3 team trade where the Blues can ship a goalie off somewhere else) to the Sabres. They won't be sending their future #1 back in the deal and leave themselves with 3 UFAs with miller, Halak, and Elliot.

I like the idea of getting Halak in return and re-signing him to be the #1 for now. He would be a bit of a downgrade in net, but it still a decent #1 that can be good enough while they continue the rebuild and can hold things down til one of the prospects step up or they can figure something else out when the rest of the teams ready. it would allow them to stay competitive while they rebuild

Sure, but the point of the post was to find a way to get Allen to Buffalo.

I'm high on Allen but Enroth is a more proven commodity than he he is, and he's better than Halak.

Basically Enroth is decent insurance if the Blues can't sign Miller, and an OK trade chip if they can.

Any talks with the blues begin or end on whether they think Miller is the missing link to a cup.

If they do, they should be willing to give up good assets. If they don't we will be looking at a disappointing return for our best player.

It's pretty much that simple and only Armstrong knows the answer.

  10. Halak and Elliott are UFAs, as is Miller. If they trade Allen, the Blues could be in a situation where they will not have anyone approaching NHL calibre, or potential, under contract come July 1.

Now I think there is a great chance that if Anaheim (his most logical UFA destination) isn't interested, Miller would be happy to sign a cap-friendly deal with the Blues.

But if you were Doug Armstong, would you take that risk?

Here's one from left field that makes some sense if you think about it a bit: Miller and Enroth for Allen and Halak.

  11. Damn, it really sounds like like Canadian Olympic coverage kicks NBC's ass.

We get pretty much every Canadian-interest event live when it happens on CBC, with TSN picking up the overlap.

Then we get replays and live coverage of lesser events during the down times, and in-depth highlights in prime time. It's pretty much Olympics around the clock.

That's not to mention the live streaming of everything on the CBC website.
