  1. Given the Pegula bucks and our cap situation, I doubt there will be a financial incentive to do that.

I also don't think McCabe is quite as highly-rated a prospect as Schultz, so there may not be the same potential market for him either.

I'm not familiar with all the whys behind Schultz not signing with the Ducks, but I can't recall anyone else doing what he did.

It seems to have been a bit of an outlier.

We have until the end of next season to sign McCabe, I believe.

  2. An unrestricted free agent is an unrestricted free agent, free to sign wherever he wants.

Any team acquiring one knows they are taking that risk.

If there was a binding agreement in place before the trade, sure that should cause problems.

So therefore, there wouldn't be a binding agreement. Either Miller, or the Sabres could go in another direction come July 1.

It's happened before and It's not that complicated.

  3. If the Oilers think Reinhart is the best player available at one, they take him.

But given the make-up of their team that likely puts one of their other young forwards on the market.

Not overly interested in Briere, but if it meant getting rid of Stafford...

  4. I agree with your main point (in bold) but I don't think Strome is the right guy to make it with. You can't compare their stats from Juniors. The OHL and QMJHL are completely different. The Q is the defense-free league; there is long list of prospects from the Q who put up insane numbers there but were never able to anything at any higher level. Recent Sabres prospects like this include Zagrapan (former 1st round pick whose Q numbers look a lot like Grigorenko's) and Gauthier-Leduc.

The reason I'm not super excited about Grigorenko right now is because I only ever hear two things about his effort/compete. It's either (a) not good or (b) "improved, but still not where it needs to be." Now maybe this is all a massive struggle because he's not used to playing at levels where he isn't significantly more talented than his competition. Maybe a light will come on and he'll "get it" one day. But in the meantime, I'm not ready to pencil him in as a guy I want to count on for the future. He's a "maybe."

The OHL is a better league than the Q, but it's not as big a gap as you are making it out to be. It's more of an NHL eastern/western conference thing.

And that discounts the production at the World Junior, which is a step above any other junior league. And the fact that their NHL games thus far have been equally ineffective.

I agree with the bolded part completely

  5. Strome has 40 points in 33 games in the A, Grigorenko looked like he wanted to go find his mommy in his 2 games in Rochester.

My point is the misperception that Grigorenko is already a bust, which has been created by the Sabres terrible mishandling of Grigorenko

They are both offensive centres, so I am going to judge them by their numbers.

The year after being drafted Strome went 30/38/68 in 46 junior games

The year after being drafted Girgorenko went 30/24/54 in 33 junior games.

    Pretty similar stats.

Two years after being drafted Strome had 6 points in six games in the World Juniors.

Two years after being drafted Grigorenko has 7 points in five games so far in the World Juniors.

    Pretty similar stats

Despite being a year-older than Girgorenko, and a much higher pick, Strome has only played eight NHL games and just 2 points, while Grigorenko has played 43 NHL games and has eight points. Again, pretty similar.

But the perception of each player is much different because Strome has been properly left to develop in junior and the minors while the Sabres stupidly had Girgorenko on the fourth line in the NHL.

  6. Ekblad has grown on my as the tourney has gone on, but I still rank him clearly below Reinhart, not even counting the Sabres need for talented forwards.

Ekblad seems to be good at everything, but great at nothing. I'm scared he'll be another Chris Phillips or Eric Johnson — a good player for a long time, but not a cornerstone.

  7. long, but good read.

They sure have a lot of love for Quick even though he has been injured.

Yeah, it's like he was pencilled in as number one at the start and got hurt before anyone could pass him.

It will be interesting if he or Miller gets the nod come Sochi.

The love for Howard and Johnson despite their play this year and the mistrust of Ryan and Yandle were real eye-openers.

The coaching staff essentially put Oshie on the team and cemented the Yandle decision.

  8. they're not good enough to be a second line, either. well, not a good second line, anyway.

Why not? They sure have been playing like one.

Moulson's a proven commodity. Ennis has shown second line talent, albeit not consistency. Girgensons has a pedigree and work ethic and continues to improve.

    Their chemistry has been excellent.

  9. Kessel is an elite goal scoring winger. But that's all he is.

Doesn't hit, block shots, win face-offs, play defence or inspire his teammates to be better.

He's been a minus player seven out of the eight seasons in his career.

And for all his skill, he's passed 65 points just once.

His talent alone means he's an excellent hockey player, and he's in his prime.

But you build your franchise around him and you get the Leafs.

  10. I think the Islanders will use their pick as well.

But the provision is not in there to protect against a top 10 pick, it is in there to protect them in case that pick ended up winning the lottery.

If by some bizarre chance we end up with one and two, I work a deal that nets us a talents young forward with a team that wants Ekblad.

  11. Sedin, Sedin, Kesler, Kopitar, Thornton, Marleau, Perry, Getzlaf, Duchene, Backes, Parise, Toews, Kane, Benn, Seguin, Bergeron, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Stamkos, St. Louis, Malkin, Crosby, Giroux, Tavares, Staal, Ovechkin...

I'd take any of them over Kessel at the moment, and that's just the forwards.

  12. Watching Czech/Canada and getting mad at the Sabres for their mad dash to 22nd last year.

Jonathan Drouin has sick skills. I think I hate Ron Rolston.

Sam Reinhart is my kind of hockey player - smartest, most effective player on the ice.

Only two games but I am starting to think his worth has been underplayed. Ekblad is nowhere near him.

I want this kid. We will need that first pick to get him.

    Fire Nolan now. ;-)

  13.

Isn't that collusion, or something, verboten by the CBA?

I'm sure anything binding would be, but how could they enforce any punishment on a non-binding verbal agreement?

The Sabres are free to negotiate with their own free agents before trading them.

Both players would still be free to sign wherever they want come free agency.

The Sabres would be running on trust and the risk either could change his mind.
