I wonder if we could get a look at Reinhart before season's end if Kootenay bows out early.
Or does the fact he's played his nine games preclude that?
-
Called up three players when they only needed two?
I guess they needed to give Teddy an excuse to not use Hodgson on the PP.
Why do I think we'll see Foligno, Varone and Dalpe there before we get a look at Hodgson and Grigo?
-
I think one more three for one trade is not only a good thing, it is probably a necessity.
-
Mess and Balls Rochester Replacements are better players. That's probably why they are staying put. The late round pick would not be worth it
Or nobody thought they were good enough to help them on a playoff run and both while be out of the NHL next year?
-
I'm optimistic too, but Murray needs to play his cards right.
I see an interesting team taking shape: these guys can easily play these roles on a playoff team as soon as next year:
Kane 1C 1R
Moulson 2C Ennis
Foligno Girgensons Gionta
Deslauriers McCormick Schaller/Larsson
Bogosian 1D
Gorges 3D
Pysyk Weber
1G
Johnson
The question is how well can we fill in the missing pieces with Ristolainen, Zadorov, Reinhart, Hodgson, Grigorenko, our high first, our deep list of B prospects, our extra picks, or whatever we can leverage from them and (this is the big one) the $30-plus million in cap space we are going to have this summer.
More than likely, uncertain goaltending and being too young in too many key positions will leave us on the outside looking in.
But we should at least be worth watching next year.
If Murray makes the right moves and hires the right coach, and we get lucky with McEichel, it might be more.
-
I expect to see all kinds of Foligno and Ennis over the last month, much more of Deslauriers and maybe Larsson and Hodgson will be put into positions to succeed. These are the guys who have a chance of being on next year's squad. And Murray has cleared the decks for them. I hope Nolan follows that lead and gives them a chance to show what they've got.

Not yet it ain't. There are still call-ups, or lack thereof, and games to be played. I get your meaning, but I'm not relenting on the tank until April 11th. The lottery will be one of two times I'll have rooted for the Sabres to win something in two years (trades excluded).
This really shows the difference between "the tank" and actual tanking.
The former is about selling off all your present for futures, to acquire a lot of good young talent and to create the benefit of picking high in the draft. The latter is about doing everything in your power to finish last.
Obviously, the closer it gets to the end, the more the two align.
But for me they will never be one and the same.
"The tank" was always management's job, it was about using the assets we had to put us into a position to be perennial Stanley Cup challengers. It was never about what happens on the ice.
The teardown is over. Now it's management's job to use the proceeds to put together something we can proud of. Murray started with Moulson/Gionta/Gorges and took a big step with Kane/Bogosian. The next steps come in June and July.
-
The tank is over guys.
It might take a bit to sink in, but we've sold off every last depreciating asset for futures.
As of today, we are officially done.
Every move from here on out will be about making the team better.

I think that this was a great move by Snow.
Johnson sucks and Halak is not as good as many make him out to be.
Neuvirth is inconsistent, but he is also capable of getting very hot.
If Halak is replaced for any reason, don't be surprised if Bjork grabs that crease and doesn't let go.
I hope that doesn't happen because I'd like to see Neuvirth back here.
Listen to his parting comments in context. Nothing there that would prevent him from coming back.
As for Murray, this was one part getting what he could for an asset, two parts tank.
He made it pretty clear he's had conversations about Subban and Jones types that still may come together for next year.
And there are free agents out there.
Johnson is an insurance policy that can play back-up if only one of those possibilities bears fruit.
And you know he will draft a big European with that third.
-
Neuvirth got a fine return considering how late in the season it is for a rental goalie.
Stewart's return was fine. Once we all realize that he's actually a bad player, not a good one, we'll realize we were silly to ever expect anything more. A second is a second. Could be a high pick too.
Bad value for Mitchell but whatever. It was essentially just letting him walk because there's a very small chance either piece ever plays in Buffalo. But it's also a nice move by Murray to ship him home and let him contend.
Flynn's deal was similar but I wouldn't say it's bad value. He's meh. Won't miss him.
Point for point, spot on, especially the Mitchell one. He might have garnered a fifth elsewhere, but Murray did right by a good soldier. Players will notice.
Methinks a lot of folks are stuck in Regier Time. GMTM is more pragmatic and less philosophical. He gives zero ###### about the technicality of "winning trades." He set out a few weeks ago to accelerate the rebuild and the tank at the same time. Tricky. He pulled it off, but he gave up a lot in the Winnipeg trade and didn't receive quite the haul he might have today. Who cares? A valuable piece in Myers went out the door, valuable pieces in Kane and Bogosian came back, along with a greater chance of McEichel. Take the rest of the trash to the curb. It's not even close, really.
Methinks I agree with this too. :P
I don't know if Murray waited to long on Stewart. Playing poker is not his style.
As a buyer, his MO is to take what he wants and pay the price.
As a seller, I think he would have jumped had someone offered what he thought Stewart was worth.
Looks like the market didn't value Stewart as much as Murray thought it should.
-
Stewart produces like Drew Stafford and plays defence like Cody Hodgson.
He is a good fighter, although he doesn't chuck 'em all that much.
He doesn't force a lot of turnovers and seems like he should blow up more guys given his size.
I think the people that like him get dazzled by his big body and his straight line speed and overlook his flaws.
Scouts used to do that too, but they've grown tired of making excuses for him.
He was traded for market value.
-
Not going to suggest Murray got a good return.
I will suggest he sold off what he could for what he could get and he didn't have much to offer.
To say he had a bad day is to imply the players traded away had a lot of value.

Moulson Hodgson Ennis
Foligno Ellis Gionta
Dalpe Varone Deslauriers
Larsson Grigorenko Schaller
Bogosian Benoit
Zadorov Ristolainen
Weber Meszaros
Johnson
Lindback

If Nolan doesn't use him on the PP now...
-
Fort the record, with Stewart and Neuvirth traded, the final return on the Miller deal is a first, second, third and Carrier.
Gets a little better if either Stewart or Neuvirth re-sign.
-
You guys think Murray should have got a bigger haul given the crap he was auctioning off?
Do you think other GMs haven't watched our team?
-
Realistically, I don't think we could have got better than this for Stewart.
He's got tools, but he's a flawed player.
-
So our first line RW, our 2nd and 3rd line centres, and our starting goalie gone, with Chad Johnson in to drive the tank home.
All tankers on board with how this shook down?
-
Jesus, is there a former Sabre they don't want?
-
FUCALE!
(Couldn't resist)
-
Trying to fill that Gionta hole with his two biggest Sabre disciples.
Nolan must be in tears.
-
Without a doubt, the worst goaltending combo in Sabres history?
-
There better be a third, otherwise why?
Neuvirth is so much better than Johnson.
Same return as Enroth basically, with maybe one of those guys coming back in the summer?
-
Jesus...Lindback and Hackett driving the Tank?
Now that's manipulating the roster.

Considering Spooner is Phil Varone, and has no future on a team with Reinhart, Girgorenko, and Girgensons (not mention Larsson, Schaller, Compher and possibly McEcihel) I don't think Murray lost much by waiting.
