  1. Run?  Ennis saw Ovechkin coming and turned his back at the last minute expecting Ovechkin to stop. Ennis got all he deserved on that play.  It's the kind of crap that's been discussed elsewhere on the checking from behind and the propensity of players to put themselves in harms way now because they expect a player will not hit them.  Ennis should have prepared for the hit and he would have come out of it okay.

So Ennis see's a hard hitting player that is half a foot taller than him and outweighs him by nearly 80 pounds, barreling down on him and he turns his back, so he deserves to be injured ? Did that warrant Ovechkin, leaving his feet to deliver the hit, up high ? How do you prepare for a hit from someone that much bigger than you ? Puff out your chest and stick out your jaw and take it like a man ?

  2. Ennis's shot is below average imo. when he's doing well, that's not the reason why. I also don't think Kane's shot is great. It's above average, but from what I had heard before the trade I expected it to be better.

Eichel's shot is fantastic and Risto's is decent, but with Risto, he knows exactly where to put it to get it through, get rebounds, or beat the goalie depending on what he sees.

I don't think I would say that Ennis's shot is "below average", but I wouldn't consider him a sniper either. This is one thing I don't understand about having Ennis at the point on the PP, his strength is quick hands more than his shot. Ennis should be down low around the net picking up rebounds and working on the half wall, not trying to get shots through from the point.

With Moulson I don't know, it may just be an older player not happy and/or not buying into a system of dump and chase.

  3. Johnson in net

Girgensons in for Moulson on the PP.

    Does Moulson finally sit tonight???

    New lines

    Lines for Sabres this AM:

    McGinn-O'Reilly-Reinhart

    Girgensons-Eichel-Gionta

    Kane-Larsson-Ennis

    Deslauriers-Legwand-Foligno/Moulson

    #BUFvsWSH

Like Zemgus on Eichel's Wing, Gionta again not so much

So Gionta records his 1st shot on goal in 5 games and gets moved up to the 2nd line, maybe if he gets a shot tonight, he'll be replacing O'Reilly on the top line.

  4. When ennis gets back they need to put him with kane and ryan

The Sabres could certainly use Ennis and Pysyk back in the line up. Trying to find the injury status in the NHL is near impossible. From what I seen is that Pysyk has a "lower body" bone bruise and Ennis is just listed with an "upper body" injury, both week to week.

I wonder if Ennis was playing with the injury, his play wouldn't dispute it, although he has always been a slow starter as far as points go.

  5. Watkins has received five targets in the last six quarters.

For 109 yards and a TD.  Clearly he's doesn't have enough impact when he touches the ball.

Only 18 in the 2nd half all year, IIRC

This is absolutely ridiculous, Watkins has been targeted 53 times this year, that ranks him somewhere in the high 80's for targets. There are 41 players that have 53 receptions or more, Watkins is on pace for 45.

I don't think you have to be an offensive genius to know that Watkins should be getting the ball a lot more. The "he's being doubled" excuse is lame, every top receiver in the league gets extra attention from the defenses, yet they're still thrown to.

  6. Whoever is calling the goal could shout out "popeye's chicken is fricken' awesome!" after an Eichel goal and it wouldn't affect my enthusiasm. It's a Sabres/Eichel goal!! The call is always secondary. Sure great calls can add to it and make goals even better, but they can't take away from the base excitement, for me.

Well... Popeye's chicken is pretty awesome.

     "Popeye's chicken is pretty awesome"

lol, that's the first thing I thought.

I agree with Thorny, the call really doesn't matter all that much to me, as long as there's a goal. Besides lately by the time RJ gets the call out, the wife is usually in with the "who scored, was that us" ?

  7. Not getting the Gionta hate at all.

That was his second penalty of the year by the way.

    His second.

His second minor in  22 games.

He's getting minutes because we don't have better.

Blaming him for that game is crazy.

I'd point to the penalty kill. How do Kane and Zemgus get caught deep on the Kill with a one goal lead with  6 minutes to play?

I think that the Gionta "hate" is being brought on by the minutes that he's receiving, if he was under 14 minutes a game (not 19+), you'd probably never hear his name. Add to that, IMO he has no business being in the top 6, let alone all the PP time and OT time he's been receiving. How can DB justify having Gionta out there for the start of OT, with Kane and Eichel on the bench. Gionta may be one of the better '2 way' players on the Sabres, but on a team that until recently has had a hard time netting the puck, Gionta getting top line minutes is not the answer.

  8. I think making Ennis a healthy scratch for at least one is needed. He just looks lost.

I have to think his confidence right now is blown, he can't keep the puck on his stick for a second and looks timid to even fight for it. In no way am I in favor of dumping Ennis, but I agree he needs to sit a game or two to get his act together.

I'll admit I always thought that O'Reilly was a bit over rated the way some put him on a pedestal, but right now I'm ready to build him a pedestal myself. The ice time may get a little concerning, O'Reilly's averaging close to 22 minutes a game (21:42), that's a lot of ice time with the way he's playing, he leads the league for forwards in ice time, by a pretty good margin. I hope he doesn't get burnt out.

  9. I'm not pleased with Ennis but I can't say I'm good with this as a result. Putting Ennis in Gio's should be spot on the third line but then, the lines are subject to change so who knows what sticks. If putting Ennis on the third line shakes him out of it so be it.

    And welcome back Kane!

Ennis has been a bit of a disappointment, but he can turn it around anytime now (a known slow starter) and score 20+ and get 50-60 points on this team. The Sabres are near the bottom in scoring, I don't thing Gionta is going to tally the numbers of some of the younger players on the team could to help this team in scoring.
