  1. After reading the article on Ho-Sang and watching his highlight video, I'm all for taking him with our first pick in the second round if he is still there, and wouldn't even mind trading up for him. Kid has sick, sick skill and is explosive. If we came out of the draft with draisaitl/reinhart and ho-sang I'd be thrilled. We can afford to take a chance on this guy with all the picks and prospects we have.

I want a guy who can put an opponent on their heels with his skating. I know getting bigger is a focus, but we've already addressed that with a few trades and we can't take big guys with skating issues every pick, or guys that project to be solid 3rd to 4th liners. I'm all for taking a guy that has top end skill but definitely a risk especially this year.

I agree, this raises an eyebrow for me. They've been oddly quiet about Bennett.

Speaking of Bennett, those even strength scoring numbers Potato posted raised my interest level in him. Seriously impressive stuff from the youngest of the group in only his second junior season.

Agreed. And seeing reinhart being pretty far down on that list while being older and in his THIRD season already is a little concerning for me. I think it's been said that reinhart has the best linemates as well, which adds to it. I honestly have no idea who I want. I've switched from Bennett to reinhart to draisaitl in a month, and think I may go back to Bennett lol. Bennett>draisaitl>reinhart for me. If draisaitl improves his skating I think he becomes the best player from this draft. I just hope ekblad goes first so I know for sure Murray got the forward he believes is best.

  3. I think this will be the difference next year. Maybe we will score a little more especially if we sign some veterans, but I think we will let in more goals that will keep us at the bottom 3-5. The bad thing about that is that you really want neuvirth or enroth to step up and prove they can be a #1 and put up good numbers

  4. The grain of salt to take with this stat is that guys who play a lot of PK time are at a slight disadvantage.

I said the same thing, but reinhart is on the lower end of even strength points per 60 minutes as well. The list was posted a few posts after the one u quoted

  5. Even Strength Points per 60...

    1 Sam Bennett OHL 3.5 2 Robby Fabbri OHL 3.4 3 Andrew Mangiapane OHL 3.4 4 Spencer Watson OHL 3.4 5 Nikolaj Ehlers QMJHL 3.2 6 Kris Schmidli WHL 3.2 7 Jayce Hawryluk WHL 3.2 8 Josh Ho-Sang OHL 3 9 Leon Draisaitl WHL 2.9 10 Nikita Scherbak WHL 2.8 11 Chase De Leo WHL 2.8 12 Lane Bauer WHL 2.8 13 Nicolas Aubé-Kubel QMJHL 2.8 14 Sam Reinhart WHL 2.8

thanks… that is surprisingly quite a large difference between bennett and reinhart (3.4 vs 2.8). over 70 games that would lead to ~12 point difference in favor of bennett. its not the largest sample, and definitely shows reinhart is more lethal on the power play (or gets more minutes) but i would've expected him to have better numbers at even strength. And i know its been talked about before but reinhart was less than a month away from being taken in last years draft and was in his 3rd season in the WHL, whereas bennett is 6 months younger and only in his second season in the OHL, which is a big deal to me, but i know not to a lot of others. my only concern with that is that somehow bennetts season was a fluke and hell regress back a little bit next year to where he should be.

regardless, i will obviously trust murrays choice and be excited for whoever our pick is between reinhart, bennett, draisaitl, even ekblad, but i think i am in camp bennett (albeit just barely). i think he's a riskier pick, yet has the highest potential and we could really use a player who is an explosive skater and still has the vision and skill to go along with it. ill be happy with reinhart just based on the general consensus among scouts that he is the best forward in the draft, but i would go with bennett -- more importantly, i doubt we will ever know the truth, but i just hope murray gets the #1 guy on his board.

  6. Thought this was interesting...

Points per 60 minutes (i.e. adjusted for ice time) for draft eligible guys:

    1. Robby Fabbri OHL 4.2

    2. Sam Bennett OHL 4.1

    3. Leon Draisaitl WHL 4.0

    4. Nikolaj Ehlers QMJHL 3.8

    5. Sam Reinhart WHL 3.7

BTW - Connor McDavid is ahead of all of the draft eligible guys above as a 16 year old.

That's definitely interesting. Do they have points per 60 min at even strength? I was surprised to see reinhart a good amount below the others, but if he played a lot more minutes than the others on the penalty kill that could explain a lot

  7. Even more impressive when you look at it like this:

@reporterchris: The #CBJ likely would have used a compliance buyout on R.J. Umberger by June 30. Instead they turned him into Scott Hartnell.

Crap! We should've waited and traded Leino back to them!

  8. Looking back almost a year later, the players we got in last years draft (plus trades) could be the turning point of this franchise. It has the potential to be one of if not the best draft we have ever had. And it's insane to think that even after this list below, we will be adding a 2nd overall, 3 seconds this year and 3 1sts next year in a very strong deep draft.

    Here's the list:

    1st) Rasmus Ristolainen

    Nikita Zadorov

    2nd) JT Compher

    Connor Hurley

    Justin Bailey

    William Carrier

    3rd) Nick Baptiste

    4th) Hudson Fasching

    5th) CalPeterson

    Gustav Possler

    Anthony Florentino

    6th) Sean Malone

    7th) Eric Locke

I think in a redraft, 4 maybe even 5 of those guys would go in the 1st round. (Rasmus, zorro, baptiste, then one or both of fasching compher).

Hurley I think would drop to late second or third although he was the youngest taken in that draft and bailey and carrier I think would be thirds while Peterson and possler would move up a round or two.

Regardless this is reassuring to look at. Other teams have to be jealous at our prospect list

  9.

Is this the only way we get in? (Excluding us beating Germany)

No if we tie Germany we are automatically in. Same with Germany so we really should shake hands and both play to a 0-0 tie :).

But we could also lose and still get in by beating Ghana/Portugal in a tiebreaker (goal differential). We should root for a tie in that game but if someone has to win then root for Portugal because their goal differential is -4 vs -1 for Ghana

  10. So if Ghana and Portugal tie we are in right? I don't see us beating Germany and even a tie will be tough. Crap

And Bradley once again with less than stellar play today though he was more noticeable than the first game. But he also missed an easy finish that 9 times out of 10 would be a goal, and had a brutal giveaway that led to the last goal. I expected better of him

  11. Where do people see jakub vrana falling? Haven't seen anyone talk about him. I'd be interested in him with one of our second rounders if he makes it that far. Haven't seen him play all that much besides the world championships but I liked his game there... but I'm sure many of you have a ton more to base your opinion of him on than I do
